Boulder terror suspect's Muslim wife says she's 'struggling to preserve her modesty' at ICE detention facility

The wife of an Egyptian migrant accused of murdering an elderly Jewish woman with a flamethrower at a Colorado protest has said she is struggling with 'preserving her modesty' in ICE custody. Hayal El Gamal and her five children are being held inside the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, 73 miles southwest of San Antonio. El Gamal and her kids, aged 18, 15, 7 and two four-year-olds, were detained after her husband Mohamad Soliman was arrested for allegedly firebombing a Colorado demonstration honoring the October 7 victims on June 1. Karen Diamond, 82, died Monday, with Soliman now charged with her murder. A dozen people between the ages of 52 and 88 were injured in the attack, which federal prosecutors believe Soliman planned out over the course of a year - driven by his anger toward Israel and his animosity toward 'Zionists.' The family have not been accused of helping Soliman carrying out the alleged offense. He told authorities he planned and executed the attack on his own accord, according to court documents seen by KSAT. In a lawsuit, also seen by the outlet, seeking their release and due process, El Gamal said her children's experience at the facility was 'traumatic'. The suit adds that she has had trouble sleeping and issues with preserving her modesty in observance of her Islamic faith. No further details on the modesty issues were shared and no pictures of El Gamal are available. The family had entered the US on B1 visitor visas in 2022 and are seeking asylum, their attorney Eric Lee said. At the time of their detention they had pending asylum applications with a formal decision still pending, he added. The lawsuit says they are being detained as a 'punishment' for Soliman's actions, alleging their Fifth Amendment rights have been violated. The suit asks that ICE are prohibited from deporting them while their asylum case is still pending and that they be released from custody. It is also calling for the courts to prevent them from being transferred out of the Western District of Texas, and to declare their detention illegal. She said in the suit that she stayed at a hotel in Colorado Springs for two nights while the authorities raided her home. They were then told by Homeland Security agents that they needed to be moved as their current situation was 'unsafe', she added. El Gamal went with the agents after believing they were trying to help her and her family, she added. They were then taken to an immigration facility in Colorado, before being flown to San Antonio on June 3 and taken to the center in Dilley. As they arrived at the facility, The White House X page had posted on X that the family would be scheduled for 'expedited removal'. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Soliman's tourist visa had expired in 2023. He had filed for asylum and was given a grant for work authorization in March of 2023. It had expired prior to his alleged attack. Soliman is facing an extra two murder charges after Diamond's death was announced on Monday. He has also been charged with an additional 66 counts in relation to 14 new victims identified through the ongoing investigation. According to his arrest affidavit, Soliman had been planning the attack for a year - waiting for his teenage daughter to graduate from high school before executing it. She graduated just days before he launched the attack with homemade flamethrowers on a Run For Their Lives event on Boulder's Pearl Street pedestrian mall. In a statement earlier this month, El Gamal Gamal insisted she and her children had no idea what her husband was reportedly planning as she begged Americans to push for her and her family's release. 'My children and I are in total shock over what they say my husband did in Boulder, Colorado earlier this month,' she said in the statement released by her Michigan-based immigration attorney, Eric Lee. 'So many lives were ruined that day. There is never an excuse for hurting innocent people,' El Gamal said from the Dilley Family Detention Center in Texas. 'We have been cooperating with the authorities, who are trying their best to get to the bottom of this. We send our love to the many families who are suffering as a result of the attack.' Her eldest daughter, Habiba Soliman, has since turned 18 at the ICE detention center, while her seven year old and 15 year old also have upcoming birthdays.

As Boulder returns to normal after Colorado terror attack, local shop dog puts smiles on faces

It's been three days since the terror attack outside the old Boulder Courthouse in Colorado, and things on Pearl Street Mall are starting to feel somewhat normal again. Business owners and regulars still feel a sense of unease, but outside one shop, vintage clothing store Heady Bauer, there's someone who is reminding them to smile a bit each day. His name is Hammy, and his owner, known locally as 'Pinner', has had him coming by the shop for a couple of years. "He's Pearl Street's Therapy Dog," Pinner told CBS Colorado. It's a bit of a running joke, but in the last week, it's taken on a whole new meaning. CBS Pinner was outside when the attack happened on Sunday. He saw flames, followed by people screaming and others running. The initial confusion eventually gave way to a realization that something was wrong. By the time the police arrived, 15 people had been injured in the firebomb attack. The suspected attacker, 45-year-old Mohamad Soliman, is being held in Boulder County Jail, accused of a number of crimes, including attempted first-degree murder. 'Pinner' was told to close up his shop as the police expanded their perimeter, which he did with Hammy looking on. "The cops came by saying 'Hey, everyone needs to clear out' and then they wanted to sweep the place, so you're wondering if everything is still fine," he said. "When I came back to the shop, I saw Hammy standing at the front with a smile on his face, and was like 'Man, what it would be like to be a dog.'" Pinner would leave the area and eventually pour himself a drink when his nerves had subsided. The news of the tragedy started to trickle in and eventually became a worldwide headline. As he grappled with what happened on Sunday afternoon, he found a source of comfort in his loyal golden retriever. "You're just replaying things in your brain," he said. "Like, is this real? Did I really just witness that? Am I dreaming?" CBS Three days after the events, there is a makeshift memorial of flowers and Israeli flags for those injured in the attack. Tourists are returning to the Pearl Street Mall, but business owners have told CBS Colorado that a general sense of unease still permeates the area around the courthouse. "When things like that happen, it takes a while for people to settle back into it," Pinner explained. On Wednesday afternoon, those who walked near the courthouse area with a strange feeling were greeted by a friendly face: Hammy the dog. In a lot of ways, he's become something of a source of comfort for business owners and locals in the area. While they look across the parking lot towards the courthouse, they can see reminders of a tragic situation. But if they turn around, they can see Hammy and get a sense that everything is going to be okay. CBS Pearl Street, to many, is weird and wonderful. It has its good and bad, its bright spots and warts. But to those who have a business here or walk its streets regularly, it's home. It will rebuild and heal, with a community effort and occasionally, a sniff and a lick from Hammy. "It's a lot more pure and innocent with him," Pinner explained. "You see a dog and they're just happy to be existing and that's kind of beautiful."

Who Is Mohamed Sabry Soliman, Suspect Behind Colorado Fire Bomb Attack

Colorado: At least six people were injured in what the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) called a "targeted terror attack" outside a mall in Boulder, Colorado, where a group of Israeli supporters had gathered to raise attention to several hostages held in Gaza. The FBI has identified 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman as the suspect who allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at participants of the pro-Israel demonstration near Pearl Street Mall. Video footage of the attack has emerged online, showing Soliman--wearing just jeans and sunglasses-- yelling "Free Palestine" as he used a makeshift flamethrower in the attack demonstrators. He also appeared to say, "End Zionists... they are terrorists' and 'free Palestine." 🚨 #BREAKING: SUSPECT IDENTIFIED as Mohamad Soliman in the Boulder terror attack shows He was shouting pro-Palestine propaganda with a thick accent. THIS IS WHY WE NEED MASS DEPORTATIONS. These people SHOULD NOT BE HERE. Multiple victims have been life-flighted from the area,… — Nick Sortor (@nicksortor) June 1, 2025 Though no charges were immediately announced against the suspect, officials said they expect to hold him "fully accountable." Boulder police said Soliman was detained 'without incident' and also taken to the hospital with "minor injuries". Police did not disclose the motivation behind the attack, saying, "It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on motive this early on." Though law enforcement authorities are yet to disclose more information about the suspect, US President Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) ally, Laura Loomer, took to X, claiming that Soliman is "not a Colorado man" and he should be deported. "Mohamad Soliman" is not a "Colorado Man". We need MASS DEPORTATIONS NOW!" Loomer wrote on X. About The Attack The attack took place at the popular Pearl Street pedestrian mall, a four-block area in downtown Boulder, where demonstrators with a volunteer group called Run For Their Lives had gathered to raise visibility for the hostages who remain in Gaza as a war between Israel and Hamas continues to inflame global tensions and has contributed to a spike in antisemitic violence in the United States. The attack came more than a week after the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington by a Chicago man who yelled "I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza" as he was being led away by police. FBI leaders in Washington said they were treating the Boulder attack as an act of terrorism, and the Justice Department - which leads investigations into acts of violence driven by religious, racial or ethnic motivations - decried the attack as a "needless act of violence, which follows recent attacks against Jewish Americans." "This act of terror is being investigated as an act of ideologically motivated violence based on the early information, the evidence, and witness accounts. We will speak clearly on these incidents when the facts warrant it," FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in a post on X. The violence comes four years after a shooting rampage at a grocery store in Boulder, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Denver, that killed four people. The gunman was sentenced to life in prison for murder after a jury rejected his attempt to avoid prison time by pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. Colorado Governor Jared Polis said in a statement that he was "closely monitoring" the situation, adding that "hate-filled acts of any kind are unacceptable."
