Coldstream gives new Ayer Kuning rep a warm welcome

Meeting the constituents: Mohamad Yusri (third from right) showing his name written in various scripts, with some residents of Kg Baru Coldstream. He is accompanied by Dr Mah (second from right). BIDOR: It's a small Chinese new village with a unique name, but it's one of the major stops for newly-elected Ayer Kuning assemblyman Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, barely 72 hours after his by-election victory. Villagers from Kg Baru Coldstream, which got its name from the Coldstream Guards of the British army, came out early yesterday morning to greet him and MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon at coffeeshops in the area. Mohamad Yusri, 54, told the mostly Hakka villagers that he would work towards promoting racial harmony and safeguarding unity. 'We firmly reject any form of extremism or those who seek to sow division among the races, particularly within Ayer Kuning,' he said. He expressed his gratitude for the warm reception from residents here, describing it as an encouragement and motivation to continue with his plans for the state constituency. He said he was mindful of the issues raised by locals such as their need for better water pressure and for more streetlights, saying many villagers had expressed their concerns to him and Dr Mah. They also showedcased their local produce for sale such as chives, pucuk paku and yam. Kg Baru Coldstream, which is about 80km from Ipoh, was founded in 1948. Many assumed that the new village was named after the cool river water of Sungai Bidor that flows through the settlement. However, its name had come from the British army unit which had once been stationed there. Dr Mah said he was confident that Mohamad Yusri would carry out his task well. He said that despite being newly-elected, Mohamad Yusri had long been active in the area. 'He understands the people and the place well. He will continue to meet more people. I am confident that he will shoulder this responsibility with excellence,' Dr Mah said yesterday. Dr Mah said that their visit to Kg Baru Coldstream was part of efforts to thank voters, especially in one of the key areas of Ayer Kuning. Based on public reception, he said that the people had responded warmly to Mohamad Yusri. He said the by-election outcome showed that there was about 89% support from voters in this area. 'This is a very clear result. The voters here are confident of his track record,' he added. The Ayer Kuning by-election last Saturday came about following the death of incumbent assemblyman, Tapah Umno chief Ishsam Shahruddin, in February. Mohamad Yusri, who is the current Tapah Umno secretary, secured 11,065 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional's Abd Muhaimin Malek (6,059 votes) and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (1,106 votes).

‘Barisan win shows voters want political stability'

Hello there: Mohamad Yusri greeting locals in Batu Tiga following his by-election victory. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: The Ayer Kuning by-election has delivered a significant message – voters are prioritising political stability and national prosperity over extremism and divisive politics, say political leaders and analysts. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the Barisan Nasional victory, with Tapah Umno secretary Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir securing a 5,006-vote majority, reflected growing grassroots support for moderate, multicultural and progressive political ideals. 'This marks three consecutive by-election victories with overwhelming majorities for Barisan, especially Umno, after successes in Nenggiri and Mahkota. Tuan Ibrahim attributed Perikatan's loss to low voter turnout. — Bernama 'It demonstrates that voters have rejected extreme and unethical politics that promote hatred, racism, verbal abuse, slander and false accusations,' he said, adding that the win reaffirmed the Barisan-Pakatan Harapan partnership. On Saturday, Mohamad Yusri won with 11,065 votes in a contest against Perikatan Nasional's Abd Muhaimin Malek and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM). Universiti Malaya's Prof Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said the result served as a wake-up call for Perikatan, which had expected to strengthen its grassroots influence in Ayer Kuning. 'Instead, it shows Barisan's narrative is resonating better with Malay voters who value stability and familiarity,' he said. However, he cautioned that Malay support was not uniform across the country, and future elections would provide clearer insights. International Islamic University Malaysia's Asst Prof Lau Zhe Wei noted that non-Malay voters, particularly the Chinese community, continued to shy away from third-force parties such as PSM and Muda. 'This does not mean there's no sympathy for them, but sympathy alone has yet to translate into votes,' he said, adding that a stronger third force would be healthy for Malaysian politics in the long run. Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said while the results were encouraging for Barisan and Pakatan at both the state and federal levels, the partnership still needed to work harder to address grassroots concerns. 'The margin should have been wider. Malay voters turned out in strong numbers but non-Malay voter turnout was noticeably lower, possibly because they viewed it as a Barisan stronghold,' he said. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's Assoc Prof Dr Mazlan Ali agreed, adding that the result showed growing acceptance of the Barisan-Pakatan cooperation, particularly among Malay voters. He said the win reinforced the partnership among the parties within the government, which is likely to continue until the next general election. Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man attributed Perikatan's loss to the low voter turnout and alleged abuse of government machinery. 'The Election Commission (EC)must do more to ensure higher turnouts during by-elections,' he said at PAS' national Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house in Lukut, Negri Sembilan. Tuan Ibrahim claimed that many of the party's outstation supporters had already returned during Aidilfitri and could not get leave again to vote. He also dismissed claims that Perikatan's focus on pig farms had alienated voters, insisting it was a genuine environmental and public health issue raised by both Malays and non-Malays. He argued that despite the loss, Perikatan had made 'inroads' and managed to secure over 6,000 votes. Tuan Ibrahim said Perikatan would conduct a full post-mortem of the campaign early next month and called for the EC to address irregularities raised by political observers, including groups such as Bersih.

Ayer Kuning polls: ‘Victory reflects voters' wisdom'

TAPAH: Barisan Nasional's victory in Ayer Kuning is a clear reflection of the people's wisdom in their judgment, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. In congratulating newly-elected assemblyman Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, the Barisan chairman said the people had rejected politics of hatred and instead, chosen stability, progress and credible leadership. 'This is a strong signal that the unity government is being accepted for its capability to govern both the state and the country effectively, guided by the principles of unity, development and the well-being of the people,' he wrote on Facebook. Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said he would personally mentor Mohamad Yusri to become a good representative for the voters. Saarani said voters from all communities – the Malay, Chinese, Indian, Orang Asli, Pakistani and Punjabi – had given their support to the Barisan candidate. 'This shows that Ayer Kuning voters love peace, reject provocation and refuse slander. 'Those who came from outside just spoke recklessly, causing chaos among Ayer Kuning voters,' he said. Saarani said the increased majority reflected growing support for the coalition. 'We saw Perikatan votes dropped from 6,812 to just 6,059 – a significant decrease, and I am very pleased, especially seeing an increase in support from young voters,' he added. MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the result demonstrates voters' preference for an inclusive and progressive governance. 'After a fierce three-cornered fight, Barisan's Dr Yusri Bakir successfully won the Ayer Kuning state seat with a majority of 5,006 votes! 'This clearly demonstrates that local voters favour Barisan's inclusive and progressive style of governance. 'Congratulations to Dr Yusri Bakir! May he continue to uphold the spirit of service and lead Ayer Kuning toward a more prosperous and united future!' Dr Wee wrote on social media. He also thanked the MCA team for their contributions to the campaign effort. 'A special thank you to MCA deputy president and Perak MCA chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon for leading the MCA machinery in their tireless efforts over the past two weeks to ensure more Chinese voters came out to vote and secure Barisan's final victory,' he said. Mohamad Yusri has pledged to fulfil all commitments made in his campaign manifesto. 'I am grateful to God for the opportunity to shoulder the responsibility as the state assemblyman for Ayer Kuning. 'So everything we pledged and committed to in our manifesto, we will strive to deliver for the benefit of the people,' he said. Dr Mah said the government's prompt response to resolve local issues faced by locals played a key role in securing support. He cited the successful intervention to combat a bagworm infestation threatening oil palm estates in Kampung Coldstream as one example. 'We managed to get Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani to help in eradicating the pests,' he said. Dr Mah also noted a positive shift in support for Barisan, particularly among Chinese voters, despite the overall low turnout in the community. 'Our analysis found that about 46% or about 3,000 people came out to vote. More than 90% of them voted for our candidate,' he said, adding that cooperation from the unity government's component parties had also helped.

Zahid: Ayer Kuning victory shows Malaysians reject ‘politics of hatred', favour stability and progress

BAGAN DATUK, April 27 — The victory of Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir in the Ayer Kuning state by-election yesterday is a clear manifestation of the people's support for the Madani Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the result is also a sign of the people's support for the Unity Government in Perak under the leadership of Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. He also congratulated Mohamad Yusri on the victory and hoped that the newly elected representative would be able to continue the service of the former Ayer Kuning State Assemblyman, the late Ishsam Shahruddin, to the people of the constituency. 'Thank you also to the Perak menteri besar who led the election machinery because I know he has prioritised the Ayer Kuning by-election since the fasting month and of course his hard work has paid off and I thank everyone,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said this when met by reporters at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration at the Bagan Datuk parliamentary constituency here last night. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid, through a post on Facebook, said that 10 out of 11 District Voting Centres (PDM) that were lost to the opposition in the last general election (GE), have now returned to the BN fold. He said the victory was clear proof that the people are becoming wiser in their judgment. 'They rejected the politics of hatred and chose stability, progress and credible leadership. 'It is also a strong signal that the Unity Government is accepted because it is able to manage the state and country well, based on the principles of unity, development and the well-being of the people,' he said.
