Coldstream gives new Ayer Kuning rep a warm welcome

BIDOR: It's a small Chinese new village with a unique name, but it's one of the major stops for newly-elected Ayer Kuning assemblyman Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, barely 72 hours after his by-election victory.
Villagers from Kg Baru Coldstream, which got its name from the Coldstream Guards of the British army, came out early yesterday morning to greet him and MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon at coffeeshops in the area.
Mohamad Yusri, 54, told the mostly Hakka villagers that he would work towards promoting racial harmony and safeguarding unity.
'We firmly reject any form of extremism or those who seek to sow division among the races, particularly within Ayer Kuning,' he said.
He expressed his gratitude for the warm reception from residents here, describing it as an encouragement and motivation to continue with his plans for the state constituency.
He said he was mindful of the issues raised by locals such as their need for better water pressure and for more streetlights, saying many villagers had expressed their concerns to him and Dr Mah.
They also showedcased their local produce for sale such as chives, pucuk paku and yam.
Kg Baru Coldstream, which is about 80km from Ipoh, was founded in 1948. Many assumed that the new village was named after the cool river water of Sungai Bidor that flows through the settlement.
However, its name had come from the British army unit which had once been stationed there.
Dr Mah said he was confident that Mohamad Yusri would carry out his task well.
He said that despite being newly-elected, Mohamad Yusri had long been active in the area.
'He understands the people and the place well. He will continue to meet more people. I am confident that he will shoulder this responsibility with excellence,' Dr Mah said yesterday.
Dr Mah said that their visit to Kg Baru Coldstream was part of efforts to thank voters, especially in one of the key areas of Ayer Kuning.
Based on public reception, he said that the people had responded warmly to Mohamad Yusri.
He said the by-election outcome showed that there was about 89% support from voters in this area.
'This is a very clear result. The voters here are confident of his track record,' he added.
The Ayer Kuning by-election last Saturday came about following the death of incumbent assemblyman, Tapah Umno chief Ishsam Shahruddin, in February.
Mohamad Yusri, who is the current Tapah Umno secretary, secured 11,065 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional's Abd Muhaimin Malek (6,059 votes) and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (1,106 votes).

Malaysia, China deepen high-tech collab under Belt and Road framework
(From left) Chiew, Chang and Lee seen during the bilateral meeting, held in Chengdu. MIRI (June 15): Malaysia and China have reaffirmed their growing partnership in science, technology and innovation (STI), following a high-level bilateral meeting between the two countries' respective ministries of science and technology. According to Miri MP Chiew Choon Man, who was part of the Malaysian delegation at the meeting, the discussions meant to deepen collaboration under the 'Belt and Road Initiative', with both countries expressing strong commitment to joint efforts in high-tech industries. 'Our shared efforts in advancing science and technology are a testament to the long-standing friendship between Malaysia and China. 'This meeting has been highly fruitful and a step forward in cementing long-term strategic partnerships that benefit both our nations,' said the parliamentarian in a press statement issued yesterday, in connection with the 'Second Belt and Road Conference on Science and Technology Exchange' in Chengdu, China. Also attending the recent session were Science, Technology and Innovation Minister of Malaysia Chang Lih Kang and former deputy minister of health, Datuk Dr Lee Boon Chye. The meeting built on the momentum of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chinese Premier Li Qiang last year. The MoU identified six priority sectors for cooperation: artificial intelligence (AI), space technology, blockchain, advanced materials, biotechnology, and renewable energy. Since the inception of STI cooperation in 2013, both countries have experienced a steady expansion of collaborative programmes. To date, over 300 joint research project proposals have been submitted under the current framework, reflecting robust enthusiasm among researchers and institutions in both nations. Both governments also reiterated support for joint laboratory programmes, talent exchanges, and people-to-people initiatives. A notable development is the 'Malaysia-China Joint Laboratory Programme', which involves leading academic institutions from both countries. These platforms are expected to accelerate technology transfer, innovation, and commercialisation of scientific breakthroughs. China has remained Malaysia's largest trading partner since 2009, contributing 16.8 per cent of total trade. With this growing STI collaboration, both countries are now aligning efforts in critical sectors including digital economy, green energy, vaccine development, and space technology – all seen as key drivers for Malaysia's long-term economic transformation. Blaming scarecrows for bus accidents
COMMENT | Can the bus tragedy that killed 15 university students near Gerik, Perak, become a racial issue? Lawyer Siti Kasim claims that Transport Minister Anthony Loke is being attacked by some Malays online for the horrific accident. The reason it seems was that the victims are Malays, whom a Chinese minister failed to 'take care of'. 'Have you forgotten the driver is Malay?' asked Siti. This is the typical blame game to divert from real problems towards what are called 'scarecrows' or 'straw men' in American English.
