Coldstream gives new Ayer Kuning rep a warm welcome
Meeting the constituents: Mohamad Yusri (third from right) showing his name written in various scripts, with some residents of Kg Baru Coldstream. He is accompanied by Dr Mah (second from right). BIDOR: It's a small Chinese new village with a unique name, but it's one of the major stops for newly-elected Ayer Kuning assemblyman Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, barely 72 hours after his by-election victory. Villagers from Kg Baru Coldstream, which got its name from the Coldstream Guards of the British army, came out early yesterday morning to greet him and MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon at coffeeshops in the area. Mohamad Yusri, 54, told the mostly Hakka villagers that he would work towards promoting racial harmony and safeguarding unity. 'We firmly reject any form of extremism or those who seek to sow division among the races, particularly within Ayer Kuning,' he said. He expressed his gratitude for the warm reception from residents here, describing it as an encouragement and motivation to continue with his plans for the state constituency. He said he was mindful of the issues raised by locals such as their need for better water pressure and for more streetlights, saying many villagers had expressed their concerns to him and Dr Mah. They also showedcased their local produce for sale such as chives, pucuk paku and yam. Kg Baru Coldstream, which is about 80km from Ipoh, was founded in 1948. Many assumed that the new village was named after the cool river water of Sungai Bidor that flows through the settlement. However, its name had come from the British army unit which had once been stationed there. Dr Mah said he was confident that Mohamad Yusri would carry out his task well. He said that despite being newly-elected, Mohamad Yusri had long been active in the area. 'He understands the people and the place well. He will continue to meet more people. I am confident that he will shoulder this responsibility with excellence,' Dr Mah said yesterday. Dr Mah said that their visit to Kg Baru Coldstream was part of efforts to thank voters, especially in one of the key areas of Ayer Kuning. Based on public reception, he said that the people had responded warmly to Mohamad Yusri. He said the by-election outcome showed that there was about 89% support from voters in this area. 'This is a very clear result. The voters here are confident of his track record,' he added. The Ayer Kuning by-election last Saturday came about following the death of incumbent assemblyman, Tapah Umno chief Ishsam Shahruddin, in February. Mohamad Yusri, who is the current Tapah Umno secretary, secured 11,065 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional's Abd Muhaimin Malek (6,059 votes) and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (1,106 votes).

Ayer Kuning polls: Perikatan should be gracious in defeat, says Perak MB
IPOH: Perikatan Nasional should be gracious in defeat after losing the Ayer Kuning by-election and not make excuses, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The Perak Mentri Besar said Perikatan leaders need to accept that the loss also showed a decreased number of votes compared to the 15th General Election. "Accept the fact that the people of Ayer Kuning rejected them. That's the truth. "A win is a win. Whatever they say, the fact remains that we won," he told reporters after attending the Riang Ria Aidilfitri GLC open house here on Sunday (April 27). He was asked to comment on Perikatan's election director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor's remark that Barisan Nasional failed to meet its 18,000-vote target, which Saarani had previously mentioned. Saarani explained that the target was based on a projected 75% voter turnout but only 58% of the registered voters came out. "Only 18,500 people voted, so naturally we couldn't hit that number. "Still, in GE15, Barisan won with a majority of only over 2,000 votes. This time, the majority rose to 5,006, meaning we improved significantly," he said. Saarani also claimed that Perikatan had prepared excuses even before official results were announced. Tapah Umno secretary Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir secured 11,065 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional's Abd Muhaimin Malek and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia with a majority of 5,006 votes in the Ayer Kuning by-election. Abd Muhaimin garnered 6,059 votes, while Bawani received 1,106. The by-election was called following the death of incumbent assemblyman, Tapah Umno chief Ishsam Shahruddin, in February.

Perikatan lost because of pig farm attacks? Tuan Ibrahim blames low voter turnout instead for PAS' Ayer Kuning defeat
PORT DICKSON, April 27 – PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man attributed the party's defeat in the Ayer Kuning by-election to low voter turnout, dismissing claims that their focus on pig farms during campaigning had backfired. The Star cited him speaking at PAS' national Aidilfitri open house in Lukut, where he urged the Election Commission to do more to ensure higher voter turnout in future by-elections. 'We saw a very low turnout on Saturday and unfortunately, this does not reflect a true picture on the ground or the support we enjoyed,' he reportedly said. The Ayer Kuning state constituency has 31,897 registered voters. Only 58 per cent turned up. He said Perikatan Nasional had anticipated a challenging battle as Ayer Kuning had traditionally been a Barisan stronghold, but noted the pact had secured over 6,000 votes and even won a polling centre located near pig farms. Tuan Ibrahim stressed that the party's emphasis on the pig farm issue was not racial or religious, citing environmental pollution concerns confirmed by lab tests. He pointed out that even non-Malay residents had complained about the pig farms, refuting allegations that PAS had stoked racial sentiments during campaigning. 'Sometimes the pigs are transported early in the mornings when parents are taking their kids to school. This to us is not right,' he was quoted as saying. Tuan Ibrahim highlighted that pig farms should legally be located at least 200 metres from residential areas, but one farm was found just 140 metres away, which he said was unacceptable. Yesterday, Barisan Nasional retained the Ayer Kuning seat in the state by-election yesterday after its candidate, Mohamad Yusri Bakir, secured victory in the three-cornered fight with a 5,006-vote majority. The Tapah Umno secretary, also known as Ustaz Yusri, garnered 11,065 votes to defeat Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional (PN) who scored 6,059 votes and Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) who obtained only 1,106 votes. In the 15th General Election in November 2022, Ishsam, who was also the Tapah Umno chief, won the seat with a majority of 2,213 votes in a five-cornered fight.
