UAE champions women's role in peacebuilding at UN Security Council
UAE Ambassador to the UN Mohamed Abushahab has called for early conflict prevention, the inclusion of women in peacebuilding, and stronger compliance with international humanitarian law during a United Nations Security Council debate on Tuesday. During the debate on multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes, Abushahab stressed the need for tangible steps to reinforce international peace and security amid rising global violence and instability. He pushed for a whole-of-society approach, highlighting the importance of including women, youth and community leaders in peace processes. 'When peacebuilding is inclusive, the outcomes are more sustainable and resilient,' Abushahab stated, adding that long-term stability depends on the meaningful participation of all segments of society. He said that peace agreements are 35 per cent more likely to last when women are actively involved in the negotiation process. Emphasising prevention as the first line of defence, he urged the international community to enhance early warning systems and make better use of underutilised tools like Article 34 of the UN Charter, which allows the Security Council to investigate potential threats to peace before they escalate. Abushahab also spotlighted Security Council Resolution 2686, which is co-authored by the UAE and the UK, as a key source for detecting early signs of conflict, including hate speech, racism and acts of extremism. Addressing the legal and humanitarian dimensions of conflict, Abushahab reaffirmed the need for strict adherence to international humanitarian law. Violations, he warned, only serve to deepen mistrust and make reconciliation more difficult. He highlighted the role that humanitarian actions, such as opening safe corridors or arranging prisoner exchanges, can play in building confidence between parties to a conflict. The debate, chaired by Pakistan, comes at a time of heightened global instability. Titled "Shaping Tomorrow: UAE Leadership for a Sustainable Future", the exhibition shines a spotlight on the UAE's commitment to advancing global efforts toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shaping a more inclusive and resilient future. Held in the presence of UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, and HE Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Chair of the UAE's National Committee on SDGs, the event welcomed international officials and government delegates from around the world. A First-of-its-Kind Showcase for the UAE Organized by a coalition of key UAE institutions—including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Investment, Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), Dubai Chambers, and Noor Dubai Foundation—the exhibition offers visitors an interactive and immersive experience. National Programs with Global Impact The exhibition showcases how UAE-led projects are influencing global development: Ministry of Interior: Presented the "Green Justice" initiative, which tackles environmental crimes in Latin America, supporting SDG 17 on partnerships. Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD): Highlighted its role in financing projects across more than 100 countries, focusing on education, renewable energy, and infrastructure. Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood: Introduced initiatives like the "National Child Empowerment Guide" and "Emirati Children's Parliament" to advance gender equality and youth engagement (SDG 5). UAE inaugurates first-of-its-kind SDG exhibition at UN HQ
New York-USA – The UAE has held its first national exhibition at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York City, as part of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development 2025. Titled "Shaping Tomorrow: UAE Leadership for a Sustainable Future", the exhibition reflects the UAE's commitment to expanding international action to achieve SDGs, as well as its involvement in shaping the future of global development. The inauguration was attended by Her Excellency Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General; His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN; His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chair of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, and head of the UAE delegation participating in the HLPF; alongside representatives from international organizations and government delegations from around the world. Platform for Showcasing Inclusive Development The exhibition was organised jointly by entities including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Investment, Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), Dubai Chambers, and Noor Dubai Foundation, a member of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI). The entities showcased their experiences and globally replicable initiatives in sustainable development, including in innovation, climate action, community empowerment. Beyond 2030: Four Pillars for Development The exhibition is the first of its kind organised by the UAE at the UN HLPF. It offers an interactive experience that highlights the UAE's journey in supporting sustainable development goals since the Rio Summit in 2000. The exhibition represents an extension of the dialogue initiated by the UAE in the Government Experience Exchange Programme with more than 170 leaders and decision-makers during the World Government Summit 2023. The exhibition presents the framework of sustainable development goals as an ambitious vision for the UAE beyond 2030, based on four main pillars: integrating sustainability into national policies and legislation; monitoring impact through accurate indicators and data; developing a flexible development model through 'Future Zones'; and enhancing international partnerships through knowledge sharing, particularly through the Government Experience Exchange Programme. The Ministry of Interior showcased its "Green Justice" initiative in Latin America, aimed at combating transnational environmental crimes, as part of its efforts supporting SDG 17. Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) presented its contributions to financing projects in 100+ countries, supporting infrastructure, education, and renewable energy. The Supreme Committee for Motherhood and Childhood showcased its initiatives aimed at empowering women and children, including the "National Child Empowerment Guide" and the "Emirati Children's Parliament," which enhance children's participation in decision-making in support of SDG 5. Arab Group calls on UN Security Council to bring end to 'catastrophic' Gaza war
The Arab Group called on the UN Security Council on Friday to take urgent action to halt Israel's 'catastrophic' war in Gaza. The group of Arab states also demanded an end to Israel's blockade of the enclave and the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid, as UN officials say the entire population faces famine. Israel has faced mounting international pressure over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the UN says only a 'teaspoon' of aid has been allowed in after a more than two-month blockade. Speaking on behalf of the Arab Group as chairman for the month of May, the UAE's UN envoy Mohamed Abushahab accused Israel of using starvation as 'a weapon of war' and rejected its proposed aid mechanism, calling it a breach of international law. The US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which began operations this week, distributes aid through several 'secure' sites – manned by private security contractors – with the aim of keeping supplies out of the hands of Hamas. The mechanism cuts out traditional UN and other aid distributors, and critics have accused it of militarising humanitarian assistance. 'Palestinian lives are not less valuable than any other lives,' Mr Abushahab told reporters in New York. Negotiations to end nearly 20 months of war in Gaza have so far failed to achieve a breakthrough, with Israel resuming military operations in March following a short-lived truce. But a new proposal submitted by the US was approved by Israel on Thursday, and Hamas has said it is reviewing it. Palestine's deputy ambassador Majed Bamya said that international condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza was insufficient. 'There is international outrage, but our outrage is not good enough,' Mr Bamya told reporters. 'It's not good enough for the people of Gaza to know that the world condemns this action, condemns these crimes, stands against them. We need actions.' He accused Israel of attempting to forcibly erase the Palestinian cause and people, warning that such efforts would fail. Mr Bamya also pushed back against expectations that Palestinians should endure the crisis alone. 'The world cannot expect Palestinians to be superheroes, that they need to resist all of this on their own, that they need to figure out the way to survive, that they need to figure out how to stay in their land,' he said. 'Israel wants to convince them that if they want life, they can only find it away from them.' This week, Israel announced the creation of 22 new settlements in the West Bank. On Friday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed to build a 'Jewish Israeli state' in the Palestinian territory which Israel has occupied since 1967. Britain called the move a 'deliberate obstacle' to Palestinian statehood, and UN chief Antonio Guterres's spokesman said it pushed efforts towards a two-state solution 'in the wrong direction'. Mr Abushahab said the Arab Group looks forward to the upcoming conference in June on the two-state solution co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France as it is 'critical' for member states take concrete actions to advance sustainable peace. 'We salute those countries that recognised the state of Palestine and strongly encourage others to follow their example,' he said. 'Recognition is not just a symbolic gesture; it is a concrete step for the just and lasting peace.'
