ASEAN-US Meeting Strengthens Regional Defence Cooperation
By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, May 30 (Bernama) -- The multilateral meeting between ASEAN defence ministers, Timor-Leste, and United States Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth on Friday is expected to further strengthen regional defence cooperation, said Malaysia's Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue here on Friday. bootstrap slideshow 'The meeting served as a platform for ASEAN countries to exchange views on regional security challenges, especially in the Indo-Pacific, and to explore opportunities to strengthen defence cooperation with the United States,' Mohamed Khaled shared in a Facebook post. He also shared Malaysia's perspective as the current ASEAN Chair, highlighting two major regional issues — the Myanmar crisis and the South China Sea situation — during his meeting with Hegseth. 'Solutions to these two critical issues must be led and driven by ASEAN through an ASEAN-led and ASEAN-driven framework,' he said. Mohamed Khaled also stressed the importance of all parties upholding ASEAN's core values and principles to ensure the continued security, sovereignty, and stability of the region. Meanwhile, during the meeting, Hegseth highlighted common security challenges and reaffirmed the US' strong commitment to the region, according to a statement by Singapore's Defence Ministry. He said that the US believed in practical cooperation and strong partnerships underpinned by shared values.

Lima '25 attracts 450,000 visitors, spurs interest in national defence industry
LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25) concluded today, recording an attendance of approximately 450,000 visitors comprising commercial and business representatives, both local and international delegations, as well as members of the public. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this year's edition reaffirmed Lima's position as a continuous platform for the exchange of ideas, the latest technologies, and strategic collaborations vital to the nation. "Despite the uncertain weather, including today's rain, we still saw large crowds rushing into the exhibition halls to witness the technological showcases. "This year saw the participation of 860 exhibitors, a higher number than at Lima '23, comprising 50 per cent local and 50 per cent international companies, which is a commendable achievement," he said in his closing speech at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) today. Over the course of five days, Mohamed Khaled said Lima '25 also recorded 1,400 business-to-business (B2B) meetings and 920 business-to-government (B2G) sessions. He said these achievements reflect a positive outlook for the development and future of the national defence industry, and position it as a key driver in reducing the country's reliance on external parties. Apart from commercial elements and business transactions, the defence minister said Lima '25 also enhanced its appeal with a notable increase in the number of static asset exhibitions compared to previous editions. Notably, for the first time, Lima '25 featured a high-immersion dome experience, known as the A.T.M.O.S Sphere, which stands for Aerospace, Technology, Maritime, and Operations for Sustainability. "This gives us a glimpse into how much more there is to discover in the world. If we aspire to become a successful nation, we must embrace a culture of continuous learning and exploration," he added. The A.T.M.O.S Sphere is a cutting-edge exhibition utilising 360-degree technology and audiovisual immersion to reflect Malaysia's aspirations to lead in land, sea, air and space innovation. Lima '25 was organised by the Defence Ministry in collaboration with Global Exhibitions and Conferences Sdn Bhd (GEC), and placed emphasis on innovation and enhancing industry competitiveness in line with current technological trends. Since its inception in 1991, the exhibition has remained the largest event of its kind in Southeast Asia's maritime and aerospace sectors.

LANGKAWI: The Ministry of Defence will continue to improve the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) to establish it as a prestigious biennial event for the nation. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin expressed satisfaction with this year's edition, particularly as it received praise and positive feedback from international participants. 'They commended the organisation of the 17th edition of LIMA, noting that LIMA 2025 was better coordinated, smoother and more organised. They also appreciated receiving earlier, clearer and more structured information,' he said in his speech at the closing of LIMA'25 here today. He said LIMA is more than just an exhibition and display of defence assets, it carries a broader, deeper significance and objective. LIMA is an arena that fosters national pride and serves as a symbol of the country's capability host an international-class exhibition, he added. Apart from that, he said, LIMA serves as an important platform for the government and the nation to stay abreast of developments in the defence sector, which in turn contributes to enhancing the country's overall defence readiness. 'LIMA is also an opportunity for us to engage with the public. "This year saw the participation of 860 exhibitors, a figure higher compared to Lima '23, consisting of 50% local exhibitors and 50% international exhibitors, a very commendable achievement," he said in his closing speech at Lima'25 at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) here.
