Malaysian in Bangkok fire attack on oxygen support after regaining consciousness
KUALA LUMPUR: One of the victims involved in the fire attack in Thailand has been fitted with an oxygen tube after regaining consciousness this morning.
Foreign Ministry's Consular Division secretary Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat said the victim, Ong Yik Leong, who suffered second-degree burns on the front and back of his body as well as both thighs, is now able to blink and move his fingers on the doctor's instructions.
"Ong is being treated at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok after the attack by a local man near the Big C supermarket in Ratchadamri on Aug 7.
"Gan Xiao Zhen, who sustained burns covering 30 per cent of her body, remains weak but conscious.
"She is only able to write and is receiving treatment to manage the pain from her injuries at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital," he said in a note shared by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
Mohammad Ali said the Malaysian Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, had visited both victims on Aug 7 to obtain updates from the treating doctors.
"The victims' next of kin have been contacted and are expected to arrive in Bangkok by noon today," he said.
Mohammad Ali said the embassy yesterday received a diplomatic note from Thailand's Tourism and Sports Ministry expressing regret over the incident and pledging assistance and support for the victims and their families.
"The Consular Division will continue to communicate with the embassy in Bangkok and provide updates on the victims' conditions accordingly," he added.
Yesterday, it was reported that two Malaysian tourists were critically injured after being set on fire by an unemployed man on Ratchadamri Road in Bangkok on Thursday night.
The incident occurred at around 10pm Thursday when the suspect suddenly poured thinner from behind onto the two Malaysians, who were seated on the steps near a shopping centre at the time.
Mohamad had earlier said they will continue to receive treatment in Thailand as doctors have advised against their immediate return to Malaysia.
