Pakistan speaker condemns Israeli strikes on Iran, voices concern over regional tensions
ISLAMABAD: Speaker of Pakistan's National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq condemned Israel's recent attacks on Iran, according to an official statement on Thursday, expressing concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East. The condemnation came during a meeting in Geneva between Sadiq and his Iranian counterpart, Dr. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, on the sidelines of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held from July 29-31. Sadiq emphasized the deep ties between Pakistan and Iran, reiterating his country's 'unwavering support' for Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity. 'As neighbors and friends, the two countries are linked through shared aspirations of peace, stability and prosperity,' he said, according to a statement circulated by the National Assembly, adding Pakistan firmly condemned 'unprovoked Israeli aggression against Iran.' He praised Iran's 'measured response' and reiterated Pakistan's preference for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue and multilateral engagement. The meeting coincided with a broader backdrop of rising hostilities between Iran and Israel. On June 13, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a surprise military offensive targeting Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure, including sites in Tehran, Natanz and Isfahan. Iranian military officials, including top nuclear scientists and Revolutionary Guards commanders, were killed in the attack. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks, causing massive damage to various neighborhoods in Tel Aviv and other areas. The conflict lasted approximately 12 days before a ceasefire was agreed upon on June 24 amid a number of casualties on both sides. Sadiq also noted the importance of reinforcing legislative cooperation through the Pak‑Iran Parliamentary Friendship Groups and sought to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.

‘Starvation of Gaza children to death is disgrace to humanity'
He also pointed out that the responsibility of parliaments requires a clear stance on the wars and tragedies the world is witnessing, especially famine and the deliberate targeting of women and children in Gaza, saying in this regard that the death of children from hunger is a disgrace on the forehead of the international community and humanity, and let parliamentarians around the world have a word of truth in stopping the crimes and killings in Gaza. On the sidelines of the conference, Al Ghanim met with Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly in Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, where parliamentary cooperation relations and ways to enhance them in various fields were discussed between the Shura Council and its Iranian counterpart, along with exchanging views on key issues on the conference agenda. During the session, views were also exchanged among parliament speakers on the importance of enhancing transparency and inclusiveness within the UN system and the role of legislative institutions in supporting reform paths that contribute to achieving international peace and security and sustainable development. In the same context, members of the Shura Council participated in discussion panels at the conference, including one titled: 'Fast-forwarding the SDGs through Parliamentary Action,' and another titled 'The Role of Parliaments in Shaping Our Digital Future.'

Iran's president was injured in Israeli airstrike on security council officials and had to escape through an emergency hatch, Tehran reveals
Iran has confirmed that president Masoud Pezeshkian was wounded during an Israeli airstrike that targeted a high-level government meeting in Tehran last month. Mr Pezeshkian, 70, is said to have sustained a leg injury and was forced to flee the building through a pre-planned emergency hatch. Six missiles reportedly struck a building in western Tehran where the Supreme National Security Council was meeting, injuring several senior officials. The strike, which was part of a 12-day war between the two nations, is said to have targeted the entrances and exits to block escape routes and disrupt air flow within the compound. Fars news, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Cops, described the strike as bearing similarities to the Israeli operation that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. The report said: 'The attack occurred before noon on Monday, June 16, while a meeting of the Supreme National Security Council was being held with the heads of the three branches of government and other senior officials in the lower floors of a building in western Tehran.' 'The attackers targeted the building's entrances and exits by firing six bombs or missiles to block escape routes and cut off air flow.' Other senior officials present at the meeting reportedly included parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and judiciary chief Mohseni Ejei. Several people were injured, with Fars reporting that 'some officials, including the president, suffered minor injuries to their legs while leaving' and escaped using 'an emergency hatch that had been planned in advance'. It also noted that power was cut off on the affected floor after the explosions. The revelation is in line with claims made by Mr Pezeshkian in a recent interview, in which he accused Israel of trying to assassinate him. Speaking to political commentator Tucker Carlson, the president said: 'They did try, yes… They acted accordingly, but they failed.' However, he did not mention being injured during the interview. Despite the president's calm tone, his remarks triggered a backlash among Iranian lawmakers. Twenty-four MPs signed an open letter accusing him of undermining national security. The criticism was also aimed at his apparent willingness to re-engage with the United States, despite tensions over American airstrikes on nuclear sites and Iran's recent expulsion of the International Atomic Energy Agency. 'From a national security standpoint, such messaging risks inviting further aggression,' the MPs wrote. 'If before June 12 there were diverse views on resisting American overreach, this war generated rare unity around the necessity of confronting the United States and its proxy, the Zionist regime.' Iran has responded to the June conflict by launching a crackdown on suspected collaborators. Authorities have arrested more than 700 individuals accused of working with Israel. A new emergency espionage law is also being debated, which would introduce harsher punishments for spying, including capital punishment. Fars did not disclose the precise location of the strike, though opposition outlet Iran International reported that an Israeli airstrike targeted an area near Shahrak-e-Gharb in western Tehran on the same day.

Iranian President 'was injured by Israeli strike on Tehran during 12-day war'
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian was injured in an Israeli attack on Tehran on June 16, during the 12-day war, according to Iranian reports. The attack took place during a meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council in the Iranian capital just days after the war began, reported the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-affiliated Fars news agency on Sunday. Mr Pezeshkian suffered slight leg injuries, according to the report. The report said six missiles or bombs were used to block the exits of the building, where the meeting was being held, but officials managed to escape through an emergency hatch. Mr Pezeshkian was reportedly injured while escaping from the building. The speaker of Iran's parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and the head of the judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, were also said to have been in the meeting. Given the precise target of the strike, Fars said an investigation was under way to determine whether information on the meeting had been leaked to Israel. Both Iran and Israel have acknowledged that Israeli covert operations with agents on the ground had taken place. Iran has cracked down on suspected Mossad agents and affiliates, with numerous arrests and executions made since the end of the war. According to the report, the operation was modelled on the strike in which Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated in the southern suburbs of Beirut last September. The exact location of the Tehran strike was not revealed in the report. In an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson aired this week, Mr Pezeshkian said that Israel had tried to assassinate him but not specify whether this was during the latest war. 'They did try, yes. They acted accordingly, but they failed,' he said. There was no comment from Israel. Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran on June 13, leading to a brief aerial war that saw strikes both from sides. Israel's military targeted top Iranian political and military officials, as well as nuclear scientists. IRGC chief Maj Gen Hossein Salami and Iranian armed forces chief of staff Maj Gen Mohammad Bagheri were among those assassinated on the first day of Israeli strikes. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said his country's forces had sought to kill Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei but despite searching for him, the opportunity did not arise. Israeli officials and US President Donald Trump threatened Mr Khamenei several times. The US joined Israel's war and launched strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, with Mr Trump declaring the 'total obliteration' of Tehran's programme.
