Man sentenced to double death penalty for murder and rape of minor girl in Nalgonda
Twelve years after the rape and murder of a minor girl in Nalgonda, a local court on Thursday (August 14, 2025) sentenced a man to double death penalty and imposed a fine of ₹1.10 lakh. The court also ordered ₹10 lakh as compensation for the victim's family.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Mukaram, 24 at the time of arrest, worked as a butcher in a beef shop and lived in the same neighbourhood as the victim. He was taken into custody by Nalgonda Town-I police in April 2013, a day after the girl went missing. Her body was recovered from a drainage canal near her home.
Investigators found that Mukaram had lured the girl, who sold tea packets in the area, sexually assaulted her, strangled her to death and dumped her body in the canal.
The court handed him one death sentence under the Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and another under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) As Mukaram has hearing and speech impairments, an interpreter was present throughout the proceedings to facilitate communication.
Nalgonda Town-I Inspector A. Rajashekhar Reddy recalled that the girl's father lodged a missing complaint on April 28, 2013, after she failed to return home. On April 29, her mother reported to the police about a body found in a drainage canal, which was later identified as her daughter's. The local police, Clues Team and sniffer dogs traced the trail back to the accused's residence, leading to his immediate arrest.
Nalgonda DSP K. Shivaram Reddy said that the public prosecutors Srivani Reddy and D. Srivani, along with the interpreter, played key roles in ensuring the conviction.
