Heartbreak leads Sibu man to break-into ex-girlfriend's room, gets eight months' jail
SIBU: Unable to come to terms with the end of his romantic relationship, a man broke into a rented room belonging to his former girlfriend's family in Jalan Ding Lik Kong.
As a consequence of his reckless actions, Mohammad Saiful Abdul Rahman, 32, was on Wednesday (August 13) sentenced by the Magistrates' Court to eight months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of burglary.
Magistrate Romario Jonoi ordered that the sentence commence from the date of Saiful's arrest, which was August 3.
According to the charge, Saiful broke into a rented room at Lorong Ding Lik Kong 39C at about 8.30pm on that day.
He was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
The facts of the case revealed that the victim, who rented the room together with his fiancée and mother-in-law, returned home to find the iron gate damaged.
More disturbingly, the room was in complete disarray — the wardrobe door and television had been broken, the portable air-conditioner damaged, and a coin box was missing.
Shortly afterwards, they encountered the accused nearby.
He openly admitted to having destroyed the items in the room, stating that he was angry with the complainant's mother-in-law, who was his former girlfriend.
It is believed his anger stemmed from her decision to end their relationship and bar him from entering her room.
The break-in was also captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) installed at the scene.
Following this, the complainant contacted the police, who subsequently arrested the accused.
The victim's losses were estimated at around RM300.
