Israeli strike kills Hamas leader in Lebanon as its troops delay withdrawal

Published: 3:40am, 18 Feb 2025 An Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon on Monday killed the head of Hamas' military operations in the country, Israel's army said. The strike came as Israel said its forces will remain in five strategic locations in southern Lebanon near the border after Tuesday's deadline for their withdrawal. The pull-out is supposed to take place under the ceasefire agreement in November that ended the 14-month war between Israel and Hezbollah. Lebanon's government has opposed any further delay in the Israeli withdrawal. The Israeli military said the drone strike killed Mohammad Shaheen, the head of Hamas' operations department in Lebanon. The army accused Shaheen of 'recently planning terror attacks, directed and funded by Iran, from Lebanese territory against the citizens of the state of Israel'.

Israel says it will receive bodies of four hostages held by Hamas in Gaza

Israel says it is preparing to receive the bodies of four hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Israeli security officials also said they were working to bring back six living hostages on Saturday. The announcement came as relatives and supporters of those held hostage in Gaza marked 500 days of their captivity with the number 500 laid out on the beach in Tel Aviv, Israel. Meanwhile, on Monday, Israeli army said it had killed Mohammad Shaheen, the head of operations in Lebanon for Hamas, in the port city of Sidon. Hamas confirmed Mr Shaheen's death but described him as a military commander. On Monday, Israeli forces also said they would remain in five strategic locations in southern Lebanon close to the border despite Tuesday's deadline for a full withdrawal. Israel had originally agreed to withdraw all its forces from southern Lebanon under its ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, but said on Monday any such move must be done "in a way that the security of our civilians is kept". The initial withdrawal deadline was in late January, but Lebanon agreed to extend it to 18 February. Lebanese president Joseph Aoun said the ceasefire agreement "must be respected," claiming Israel "cannot be trusted". He said Lebanese officials were "working diplomatically to achieve the complete Israeli withdrawal, and I will not accept that a single Israeli remains on Lebanese territory". Giving reasons behind the latest drone strike, Israel accused Mr Shaheen of "recently planning terror attacks, directed and funded by Iran, from Lebanese territory against the citizens of the state of Israel". Footage showed a car engulfed in flames following the strike near a Lebanese army checkpoint and Sidon's municipal sports stadium. Lebanon's state news agency said emergency teams had removed one body from the car, but did not identify the victim. Since the ceasefire, Israel has continued air strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon, claiming it is targeting military sites containing missiles and combat equipment. Israel and Lebanon have exchanged accusations of violating the ceasefire agreement. Please refresh the page for the fullest version.

Israeli Drone Strike Targets Hamas' Mahmoud Shaheen in Lebanon's Sidon

In a targeted airstrike on Monday, Israeli drones assassinated Hamas leader Mohammad Shaheen in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon. The strike hit his vehicle near the coastal corniche, just meters from a Lebanese Army checkpoint. Lebanese Army forces immediately cordoned off the area, later granting journalists access to document the targeted vehicle. The attack also triggered severe traffic congestion, as security measures led to road closures around the site. The Lebanese Health Ministry later confirmed that the strike claimed the life of one civilian, while emergency responders, including ambulances and fire brigades, rushed to the scene. This marks the first Israeli attack on Sidon since the ceasefire took effect on November 23 and the second strike within 24 hours, following the targeting of another civilian vehicle on Jarjouh Road in the Iqlim Al-Tuffah region. Later on Monday, Lebanon's Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya (Islamic Group) announced the martyrdom of Hamas military official Mahmoud Shaheen, who was killed in the Sidon airstrike.
