Duleep Trophy 2025: Full squads, match schedule, date and venue - All you need to know
NEW DELHI: The 2025–26 Indian home cricket season will kick off with the Duleep Trophy, scheduled to begin on August 28 and run until September 15. Serving as a crucial preparatory tournament ahead of India's long home Test season, the red-ball event will mark the return of the traditional zonal format after last year's deviation to a four-team structure selected directly by the national selectors. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! In the revived format, teams will compete under their zonal banners — North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone, Central Zone, and North East Zone. The opening fixtures will see North Zone face East Zone and Central Zone take on North East Zone in the quarter-finals. South Zone and West Zone, who were the finalists in the last zonal edition in 2023, have earned direct entry into the semi-finals. Poll Do you believe the return to a zonal format will enhance the competition in the Duleep Trophy? Yes, absolutely! No, I prefer the previous structure. The tournament will be hosted primarily at the BCCI 's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, ensuring consistent playing conditions and reducing logistical challenges. This centralised venue choice is expected to provide ideal facilities for both players and support staff, with pitches designed to aid competitive red-ball cricket. The Duleep Trophy, long regarded as a testing ground for domestic talent on the cusp of national selection, is likely to feature several India A and fringe Test players eager to impress ahead of the high-profile Test assignments lined up for the season. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your donations can help this little boy see again clearly Donate For Health Donate Now Undo With the return of zonal rivalries and a condensed, high-intensity schedule, the competition promises a mix of tradition, talent, and high stakes as India's cricket calendar gets underway. India batter Tilak Varma to lead South Zone in 2025 Duleep Trophy
India left-handed batter Tilak Varma will captain South Zone in the 2025 Duleep Trophy, starting on August 28. The tournament, which will be held in the old zonal format of six teams, will mark the beginning of 2025/26 domestic cricket season. Though Tilak didn't play for Hyderabad in the previous Ranji Trophy season due to his Indian team commitments, the left-handed batter scored a century on his County Championship debut for Hampshire against Essex and followed it up with scores of 56, 47 and 100. Kerala batter Mohammed Azharuddeen, who shined for Kerala in the Ranji semi-final against Gujarat in Ahmedabad with his career-best score of 177, has named the vice-captain in a squad selected by South Zone selectors during a meeting in Pondicherry. Apart from Azharuddeen, batter Salman Nizar along with pacers Basil NP and Nidheesh MD have found places in the main squad. Hyderabad opener Tanmay Agarwal, who amassed 934 runs in seven matches and paved the way for the side's return to the Elite system in Ranji Trophy, has also been named. Other prominent India names include left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore, left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal and wicketkeeper-batter Narayan Jagadeesan, who earned his maiden India call-up as a replacement for injured Rishabh Pant for the upcoming fifth Test against England at The Oval. The Duleep Trophy will begin on August 28 through quarter-final clashes between North Zone and East Zone, while Central Zone take on North East Zone at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on August 28. The first match of the South Zone is on September 4, with their opponents to be winner of the clash between North and East Zones. Former India fast bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji will be the head coach of the South Zone team. South Zone Duleep Trophy squad: Tilak Varma (c) (Hyderabad), Mohammed Azharuddeen (vc) (Kerala), Tanmay Agarwal (Hyderabad), Devdutt Padikkal (Karnataka), Mohit Kale (Pondicherry), Salman Nizar (Kerala), Narayan Jagadeesan (Tamil Nadu), Tripurana Vijay (Andhra), R Sai Kishore (Tamil Nadu), Tanay Thyagarajan (Hyderabad), Vijaykumar Vyshak (Karnataka), Nidheesh MD (Kerala), Ricky Bhui (Andhra), Basil NP (Kerala), Gurjapneet Singh (Tamil Nadu), and Snehal Kauthankar (Goa). Tilak Varma to captain South Zone in the 2025 Edition of Duleep Trophy
India batter N Tilak Varma was on Sunday named as the South Zone skipper in the season-opening Duleep Trophy to be held here next month. The 22-year-old Tilak, who has played four ODIs and 25 T20Is, was in fine touch for Hampshire recently, smashing 100, 56, 47 and 112 in four innings for the English county side. Kerala players were rewarded for their excellent run till the Ranji Trophy final as four players from the state found place in the 16-member squad. They were: Mohammed Azharuddeen, who will be Tilak's deputy, MD Nidheesh, Basil NP and Salman Nizar. Tamil Nadu batter Narayan Jagadeesan, who has flown to England as a cover for the injured Rishabh Pant, senior left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore and middle-order batter Devdutt Padikkal too are in the squad. India and Karnataka pacer Vyshak Vijaykumar will lead the South Zone bowling attack. Meanwhile, prolific batter R Smaran, who was Karnataka's highest run-getter in last season's Ranji Trophy with 516 runs, has been included as a standby, possibly because of the unspecified injury that he picked up in May that prevented him from joining IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad. This year the Duleep Trophy will return to the Zonal format between six teams, deviating from the previous years' set-up of India A, B, C and D. The senior national selectors picked the sides when the tournament was played in the A, B, C and D format, but now the teams will be picked by respective zone selectors. The four-day tournament will be played here at the BCCI Centre of Excellence grounds from August 28. North Zone will face East Zone while Central Zone will take on North East Zone in the quarterfinal matches. South Zone and West Zone have got a direct entry into the semifinals. South Zone squad: Tilak Varma (captain), Mohammed Azharuddeen (vice-captain), Tanmay Agarwal, Devdutt Padikkal, Mohit Kale, Salman Nizar, Narayan Jagadeesan, T. Vijay (Andhra), R Sai Kishore, Tanay Thyagarajan, Vyshak Vijaykumar, MD Nidheesh, Ricky Bhui, Basil NP, Gurjapneet Singh, Snehal Kauthankar.
