Fresh Epping hotel protests tonight after migrant charged with sexual assault

ESSEX Police have issued advice as fresh protests are planned outside the Bell Hotel in Epping tonight after migrant residing there was charged with sexual assault yesterday. Tonight's protest follows charges against Syrian national Mohammed Sharwarq, 32, who resides at the hotel and appeared before Chelmsford Magistrates' Court yesterday on a charge of sexual assault, two counts of common assault and four of assault by beating. Police retain previous powers to ask protesters to remove face coverings in the area outside the hotel, which has been the scene of protests for weeks after another man, Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, was charged with sexual assault. The 38-year-old is accused of attempting to kiss a 14-year-old girl, he denies the charges and is due to stand trial this month. A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "We are aware of a planned peaceful protest this evening in Epping, and we have a full policing plan in place to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance and those resident in the area. "New fencing is in place at a site opposite the hotel, which will assist us in facilitating the protest, maintaining road safety and minimising disruption to everyone driving in Epping this evening. The former taller fencing has been removed. "Our officers at the protest site have all of the measures previously in place available to use should they believe there may be a risk of serious disorder or serious disruption in the area. "However, because of the recent peaceful protests there are no orders in place for this evening's event at this time. "We trust that those who have protested peacefully in previous weeks will continue to do so. "Our Liaison Teams will be at the scene throughout the evening once again today." The housing of asylum seekers at hotels has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks, with Epping Forest District Council applying for an interim High Court injunction in a bid to stop asylum seekers from being housed at the Bell Hotel.

Man staying at hotel that has been focus of protests denies sexual assault charge

A man staying at a hotel that has been the focus of a series of protests has denied a charge of sexual assault and faces a trial next month. Mohammed Sharwarq, a 32-year-old Syrian national, was arrested after police were called to the Bell Hotel on the Epping High Road in Essex yesterday, police said. Sharwarq, who is alleged to have kissed a man on the neck, indicated a plea of not guilty to a charge of sexual assault at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court today. He indicated guilty pleas to six further charges concerning four complainants - with two counts of common assault and four of assault by beating. Sharwarq is alleged to have punched a man in the face, thrown an object at a man, slapped a third man in the face and attempted to punch a fourth. Sky News understands the alleged offences took place inside the hotel between 25 July and 12 August. District judge Lynette Woodrow remanded Sharwarq, who was assisted in court by an Arabic interpreter, in custody until his trial on 30 September. The arrest followed weeks of protests outside the hotel.
