Durand Cup 2025: Mohammedan SC Wrap Up Campaign With 3-0 Victory Against BSF FT
Last Updated: Mohammedan Sporting Club ended their 2024 Durand Cup campaign with a 3-0 win over BSF Football Team, thanks to goals from Sajal Bag and Maxion, showcasing their dominance. Mohammedan Sporting Club wrapped up their 2024 Durand Cup campaign on a high note, delivering a commanding 3-0 win over BSF Football Team in their final Group F fixture on Thursday. Coming into the match after back-to-back defeats, the Kolkata giants were clearly intent on restoring pride—and wasted no time asserting their dominance. Barely five minutes in, Sajal Bag calmly slotted home a penalty to put Mohammedan ahead, showing composure and leadership in a pressure moment. The early goal stunned BSF FT and tilted the momentum entirely in favour of the Black Panthers. Maxion at the Double The pressure mounted as Mohammedan pressed relentlessly. In the 21st minute, a fierce effort was parried by BSF goalkeeper Harpreet Singh, but Maxion was perfectly placed to pounce on the rebound, doubling the lead with a sharp finish. The goal sent the home crowd into raptures and further dented BSF's confidence. Maxion continued to be the focal point of Mohammedan's attack and was rewarded again in the 35th minute. A precise cross from the right found him unmarked inside the box. With excellent control and vision, he rifled in his second goal of the day—capping off a flowing team move that reflected the side's technical quality and chemistry. BSF had a rare chance to respond just before half-time when Kishori Singh slid a dangerous ball across the box to Navjot Singh, but the forward squandered the opportunity from close range. With a comfortable three-goal cushion, Mohammedan shifted gears in the second half, adopting a more measured approach focused on possession and shape. Their midfield, which had been vibrant in the first half, transitioned into a controlling role. BSF FT tried to mount a response, with Kishori Singh continuing to probe and Navjot again finding himself in a good position. However, the finishing touch eluded the visitors, and Mohammedan's defence, marshalled with calm authority, ensured the clean sheet remained intact. Substitute Shiba Mandi injected fresh energy into the attack and came close to adding a fourth late in the game, narrowly missing the target after a solo run. Durand Cup 2025: Liston Colaco Nets Brace As 10-Man Mohun Bagan SG Beat Mohammedan SC 3-1
Last Updated: Listion Colaco scored two and assisted the third as 10-man Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Mohammedan Sporting Club 3-1 in the 134th Durand Cup. Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Mohammedan Sporting Club 3-1 despite going down to 10 men in their group B game of the 134th edition of the Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Thursday. Liston Colaco scored two goals and assisted the third, which Suhail Ahmad Bhat converted as the Mariners beat the Black Panthers. The all-Indian affair did get off to a timid start as the Indian coaches at the touchline looked on. It soon turned tense as either crossbar was rattled. Mohammedan's Ashley Alban Koli and Mohun Bagan's Suhail Ahmad Bhat were the culprits just after the 10-minute mark. Vishal Kaith too had a scare soon after a shot from Sajal Bag, but Dippendu Biswas did well to calm things at the back. The moment of magic arrived in the 23rd minute. Liston Colaco weaved through the defenders before being chopped down by Joseph Lalmuanawma at the edge of the penalty box. The referee blew his whistle as the new number 7 got up and took the ball. He paused as Anirudh Thapa seemed to hover over the free-kick. But it was Liston who struck, and the ball sailed over the five-man wall and into the top corner. The Mariners drew blood first. With the half trickling to a close, the game came to life when Tangva Ragui went for the same ball as Apuia but ended up being a tad late. The Mohun Bagan star midfielder reacted by head-butting his opposite number as a melee broke out in the middle of the pitch. The referee had no choice but to Either team was left furious by what transpired. Dippendu made his frustrations show soon after the play resumed, earning another yellow card. The game that had started with much courtesy saw the first half end in bad blood. Mehrajuddin Wadoo opted for a single change at the restart. A defender off and another attacker on. The result was almost immediate. With three at the back end and more players up front, Mohammedan went for the kill. In the 50th minute, Lalthankima took a chance at goal with a vicious strike from distance. Kaith somehow managed to parry the effort, but the ball bounced in front of Ashley, who did not make any mistake, slotting the ball calmly into the back of the net. Kaith had more to worry about when Sajal Bag's long-range strike almost caught the Mohun Bagan keeper off-guard. As the loose ball bounced in front, he jumped at it to collect, but ended up in a crash. The physio came on as the play was halted with the keeper struck on the head. It was Mohun Bagan who scored against the run of play. Liston's magical run saw him draw the defenders away, only for him to backheel the ball into the path of Suhail. The forward's first shot was saved heroically by Subhajit Bhattacharjee, but Suhail's second attempt flew into the back of the net in the 63rd. Despite being a man down, Mohun Bagan assistant coach Bastab Roy did not make any changes to his starting XI as Mehrajuddin brought on more fresh legs as the clock ticked over the 80-minute mark. And yet, the Mariners kept the Black Panthers at bay. That too for over half of the game. In the 90th minute, Kaith made a match-winning save as he came out of his lines to thwart Bamiya Samad after he was slipped in behind by Maharabam Maxion. The Mohun Bagan keeper's leg got the telling touch that kept his side's lead intact. In the added minute of injuries, Liston was brought down inside the penalty box while trying to receive a pass from Thapa. Pukhrambam Dinesh Meitie received a yellow card for his challenge. The star winger stepped up and slotted the ball calmly into the back of the net for the Mariners to get a comprehensive 3-1 victory. Durand Cup: Mohun Bagan Coach Warns, ‘Not Going To Be Easy…' Against Mohammedan
Mohun Bagan Super Giant kick off their Durand Cup campaign with Kolkata Derby against Mohammedan Sporting Club. Mohun Bagan Super Giant kick off their Durand Cup campaign underway in the 134th edition of Asia's oldest football tournament against city rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club in the second Kolkata derby of group B at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Thursday. Unlike other Indian Super League sides, who don't exactly have top-division football to look forward to yet, Mohun Bagan have AFC Champions League 2 come September. After the impasse over participation, the Mariners joined forces recently and will be without their foreign imports along with head coach Jose Molina, who flew into the city in the early morning. Foreigners will join the squad in the second week of August, just in time for the knockouts if they qualify. In the interim, assistant coach Bastab Roy has the reins and has at his disposal a neat-full-strength Indian squad., most of whom will be available for the first game of the season. Most stars have been training for just over a week and should be ready to play some part in the game – like Ashish Rai, Manvir Singh, Liston Colaco, Deepak Tangri, Apuia, Abhishek Suryavanshi, Anirudh Thapa, Glan Martins, and Vishal Kaith, who will donning the captain's armband, as Subhasish Bose regains match fitness. Bastab Roy, though, is not getting complacent. 'A key feature of Mohammedan SC is that they are a young team and they don't depend on any individuals and play as a team," Bastab was quoted as saying during a press conference on Wednesday. 'They have already played a game while we are going to play our first one. From that standpoint, we need to work harder to win the match. It's not going to be easy." Goalkeeper Kaith echoed his coach's sentiments, saying: 'They (Mohammedan SC) have already played, so their fitness level will be better. No, we can't take the match as an easy one." 'The Durand Cup format is such that only the group winner and two second-best teams will advance to the quarterfinals. So, one loss may jeopardise your chances," Bastab added. Mohammedan SC, meanwhile, will smarting from their 1-2 loss to lower-division side Diamond Harbour FC in their opening group game. Without any star Indian names or foreign recruits, the upcoming game may again just prove too big a challenge. The Black Panthers boss Mehrajuddin Wadoo is not too flustered but has emphasised his young side's need or resilience and teamwork. 'I'm happy with the way the young players are giving their best. Results may not be in our control. The way we conceded the goal (against DHFC) in the last minute was extremely unfortunate and luck was also not on our side. But we've to accept this and move on," Mehrajuddin was quoted as saying. 'Against Mohun Bagan, we'll try to minimise the mistakes we made (against DHFC) and give them a fight," he added. view comments Location : Kolkata, India, India First Published: July 31, 2025, 10:03 IST News sports » football Durand Cup: Mohun Bagan Coach Warns, 'Not Going To Be Easy…' Against Mohammedan Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Durand Cup 2025: Mohammedan SC And Diamond Harbour FC In 'Kolkata Derby'
Last Updated: Mohammedan Sporting Club and Diamond Harbour FC kick-off their 134th Edition Durand Cup 2025 campaign with a Group B clash. On paper it is a Kolkata derby as Indian Super League (ISL) side Mohammedan Sporting Club take on I-League 2 champions Diamond Harbour FC in the 134th edition of the Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) on Monday. It should be a mismatch on paper again, a team from the first division of the country against a side climbing the ranks steadily. But the reality is far from it. West Bengal's Diamond Harbour FC was established in 2022 by All India Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and the Member of Parliament of Diamond Harbour, Abhishek Banerjee. Kibu Vicuna, who has previously helmed Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters, was appointed as the club's first head coach and still is at the helm. In 2025, DHFC are making their debut in the Durand Cup after winning back-to-back promotions in I-League 3 and 2 to reach I-League. Diamond Harbour have come prepared for their first bow in the oldest tournament in Asia. Statement signings like striker Luka Majcen of Punjab FC alongside players with ISL experience – like Jobby Justin, Melroy Assisi, Wungngayam Muirang, Mirshad Michu and Halicharan Narzary. Despite having established names in their ranks have seen their stature diminish in the last few years, despite winning the I-League and gaining promotion to the ISL. Financial mismanagement, absence of investors and a general lack of funds have seen multiple players leave the side over the summer. FIFA and AIFF transfer bans have rightfully ensued. As per local media reports, last season's club captain Samad Ali Mallick was forced to leave the side in order to earn a living. Mohammedan still have Amarjit Singh Kiyam, Gaurav Bora, Padam Chhetri and Abhishek Halder along with young starlets like Ashley Alban Koli and Makan Winkle Chote but will play the tournament with a blend of reserve squad players, talented Bengal-based footballers, and promising youth prospects. Head coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo, who had taken over the reigns mid-way through last season will hope that the margin of defeat will not mean ousting from the Durand Cup after the first game itself. Goal-difference and margin of victories may come into play in a group that includes last year's runners up and 17 times champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant along with Border Security Force FT. A derby on paper but a contest that may see change of guard in Kolkata football. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
