Libya win African minifootball title after shootout victory over Morocco
Libya secured their first-ever African Minifootball Championship title with a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Morocco following a goalless draw in regulation and extra time.
The final, held on Friday in the eastern city of Derna, marked a significant milestone for both Libyan sport and the host city, which is recovering from the devastating floods of 2023.
Libyan players Mohannad Ito, Fadel Shleiq, and Jasem Al-Ghazali converted from the spot, sealing the win and sparking jubilant celebrations in the stands.
The victory also sees Libya qualify for the upcoming Minifootball World Cup.
Libya reached the final after defeating Guinea 2-0 in the semi-finals, while Morocco edged past Mauritania 4-3. The tournament featured 16 teams from across the continent and was hosted by Libya for the first time in several years.
This triumph is being hailed as a symbol of resilience and renewal in Derna, and a testament to Libya's ability to host major sporting events amid ongoing national challenges.
