KUCHING (June 25): The redelineation of state and parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak could be among matters tabled at the upcoming special State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on July 7.
'I will not preclude that possibility,' DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar told a press conference today.
'It's a one-day (sitting) from 9am to 6.30pm. If necessary, then it's extended under Standing Order 9 to extend it beyond 6.30pm.'
Mohd Asfia said this after officiating at the Majlis Ucaptama Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak held in conjunction with Parlimen Mahasiswa UiTM Cawangan Sarawak at the DUN Complex here today.
He explained that the special sitting was called under Standing Order 8(3) at the request of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
'This notice, calling the honourable members for a meeting, is made under Standing Order 8(3). With Standing Order 8(3), the Yang Amat Berhormat Premier presented to me that he is desirous of calling a meeting on 7th of July, 2025.
'Pursuant to that, and in tandem with that presentation, I issued a notice calling for a meeting of all the honourable members, 82 of them, for a meeting in the DUN on 7th of July, 2025,' he said.
When asked to confirm the agenda, the Speaker said no Bill had been received so far.
'If I say, it is a matter of conjecture. But if I speak facts, I have not received any Bill yet.
'Once I receive the Bill, as usual, our practices can be pre-counselled. I shall call for a press conference and brief all of you what this is all about,' he said.
When asked whether the number of state seats might change, he replied: 'I don't know whether the seats' composition will be increased or decreased. I have not received any Bill yet. So, I can't really give comments, much as I would like to.'
He also clarified that any changes to the number of seats fall under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission (EC) and not the state assembly.
'The DUN doesn't come in. It's SPR (EC). It's a federal power. It's not the DUN who creates it,' he explained, while adding, 'The number of seats will not be decreased.'
The Borneo Post had previously reported a letter signed by Mohd Asfia confirming the special one-day sitting had been circulated to all 82 assembly members.
However, the agenda for the sitting was not specified. lead mohd asfia awang nassar redelineation Special DUN sitting
