Miri civil servant duped of RM385,000 in false money laundering claim
Photo for illustration purposes only. — Photo by Thallen Merlin/Pexels MIRI (July 29): A civil servant lost RM385,000 from his Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings to a scammer posing as a police officer, who accused him of money laundering. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the Commercial Crime Investigation Division here received a police report on the fraud case yesterday. He said the victim in his 50s, who works as an assistant executive at a government agency, received a call from an unknown individual, who introduced himself as a police officer from the Penang police headquarters. The suspect accused the victim of being involved in money laundering and claimed he was on the police's wanted list. 'The victim was instructed to withdraw funds from his EPF and hand it over to the police for investigation purposes. 'He only realised he had been deceived in an online scam involving impersonation of a police officer when he was asked to make another payment. He suffered a financial loss of RM385,000,' Mohd Farhan said in a statement today. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of between one year and 10 years in prison, caning, and a fine. Mohd Farhan advised the public to remain vigilant and to never disclose or provide any financial information to unknown callers. He said the public must always be cautious and take necessary precautions online, especially if the caller claims to be a friend, acquaintance, courier, law enforcement officer, or court official. 'If you have recently transferred funds to any bank account or e-wallet belonging to a suspect, you are advised to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) on 997 immediately to report non-existent loans, love scams, e-commerce scams phone scams, and others,' he added. 13 motorcycles seized, 57 summonses issued in Miri's 'Op Samseng Jalanan'

MIRI (July 27): A total of 13 motorcycles were seized and 57 summonses issued during 'Op Samseng Jalanan' conducted at various locations here last night. Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation, carried out by Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters, took place at Jalan Bandaraya Miri, Jalan Marina Utama, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Tanjong Lobang, Jalan Tudan, Jalan Permyjaya, Jalan Taman Tunku, and Jalan Canada Hill, from 10pm on July 26 until 3am on July 27. 'During the operation, 13 vehicles were inspected, and all of the motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 after being found modified from their original structure and for further inspection,' he said in a statement. He added that 13 individuals were also inspected and 57 PDRM (K) 257 summonses were issued for various traffic offences. Mohd Farhan said that similar operations will be carried out from time to time to ensure road users comply with traffic laws and regulations. He urged road users, especially motorcyclists, to ride responsibly and cautiously, avoid illegal vehicle modifications, and refrain from roadside gathering which can lead to congestion and noise disturbances. Elderly woman, daughter-in-law escape unhurt as house collapses in Kuala Baram

'The 69-year-old house owner reported that the collapse was due to the deteriorated condition of the wooden pillars, which had become rotten over time,' he said in a statement today. He added the house is situated in a low-lying saltwater swamp area which is frequently affected by high tides. 'During the incident, the victim was at home with her daughter-in-law. Local man dies after being crushed by 4WD during repair job in Miri workshop
MIRI, July 22 — A local man has died after he was crushed by a four-wheel-drive vehicle while performing maintenance work at a workshop located behind a petrol station at Piasau here yesterday. Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed the incident in a statement, saying a police report was lodged at the Miri Central Police Station following the fatal accident. 'The case is being investigated as a sudden death report (SDR),' he said, adding that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He urged members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or have relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
