Shah Alam backs state parking privatisation plan
MBSA ready to implement Selangor's privatisation of on-street parking. — Filepic SHAH ALAM City Council (MBSA) is ready to implement Selangor's on-street parking privatisation exercise if it proceeds on Aug 1 as scheduled. Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said the city council would accept and support the decision made by the state government. 'It was decided by Selangor government and we will execute what is needed,' he said at MBSA's monthly full board meeting. Mohd Fauzi disclosed that MBSA collected RM21.9mil in parking fees and RM8.9mil from compound fines last year. 'Between January and June this year, MBSA collected RM10mil in parking fees, and compound fines of RM3.6mil.' Under Selangor's Intelligent Parking (SIP) initiative, it was proposed that four local councils be involved in the first phase of the on-street parking privatisation scheme – MBSA, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS). However, on Wednesday, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said MBPJ had objected to the proposal. Separately, Mohd Fauzi said MBSA would conduct inventory of neglected drainage in the city that did not fall under the jurisdiction of any authority. He said city council engineers would start to map these secondary ditches, drains and water channels to be listed under its control. 'It is a huge task as it involves mapping and documenting the condition, size, location, area topography and soil type,' said Mohd Fauzi. He added that the inventory would be used to plan maintenance, upgrades and future improvement of the drainage infrastructure. Mohd Fauzi said the state government, in a meeting held in June, highlighted the importance of managing and maintaining drainage networks that did not fall under any authority. 'Selangor decided that all main drainage networks not under any authority's jurisdiction, and connected to rivers will be managed by Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID).' Secondary ditches, drains, pipes and culverts connecting to main drains would be maintained by the local councils, he said. 'All ditches in agricultural areas will be maintained by DID while Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) will maintain all water channels within JKR land reserve except for main drains connecting to rivers,' elaborated. MBSA, said Mohd Fauzi, would maintain all secondary ditches and drains in the city to address cleanliness, blockage due to wild vegetation and to resolve flooding issues. 'In two months, we should have the inventory,' he said. He added that MBSA would develop a plan for maintaining and upgrading the drainage network based on the inventory, listed as priority for improvement with budget allocation.

Malfunctioning water pumps to blame for Taman Bukit Kemuning floods

DRAINAGE network in Taman Bukit Kemuning have been desilted to maximise water capacity, which will improve water flow and prevent flooding in the neighbourhood. Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) stepped up coordination with agencies dealing with drainage networks and water suction pumps. 'The council has told the agencies to clean up the drainage networks and ensure water suction pumps under their purview are in working order,' he said after the city council's full board meeting at Wisma MBSA in Shah Alam, Selangor. A water pump that was supposed to channel rainwater out of the area was reported to have failed, resulting in flooding in several areas from Section 25 to Section 36 on June 20 after heavy rain. On MBSA's Golden Parking initiative introduced in conjunction with the city's 25th anniversary, Mohd Fauzi said only 1,150 seniors age 60 and above out of 1,305 applicants were selected. 'Applicants must be a ratepayer without outstanding assessment tax payments, and the applicant's residence and vehicle must be registered under the same name. 'Only one car can be registered for the free parking benefit via the Smart Selangor Parking system or Flexi Parking,' he added. Mohd Fauzi said unsuccessful applications were due to having outstanding assessment tax, unpaid compounds or MBSA traffic fines. 'All these must be settled before reapplying for the initiative,' the mayor said. He said over 20,000 seniors living in Selangor's capital city were eligible for MBSA's free parking initiative. The Golden Parking, valid for two years, aimed to make the city more inclusive to the elderly and was a gesture of appreciation for their contribution to the community. Applications need to be renewed every two years. 20,000 seniors to benefit from Shah Alam's free parking scheme
SHAH ALAM: More than 20,000 senior citizens will benefit from the Shah Alam City Council's free parking initiative, launched in conjunction with the city's silver jubilee. Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said today that the Golden Parking initiative aims to make the city more inclusive to the elderly and serves as a gesture of appreciation for their contribution to the community. The initiative applies only to parking areas under the council's jurisdiction. He said applicants must meet five eligibility criteria for the free parking, including being at least 60 and being an assessment taxpayer under the council's jurisdiction. "The car's grant must be under the name of the senior citizen. Each elderly person can register for only one car via the Smart Selangor Parking system or Flexi Parking. "This can be used during its validity period, which is two years. Applications need to be renewed every two years. "This initiative began this month. MBSA has received positive feedback. A total of 628 applications were submitted, with 499 approved. "The remaining applications were not approved due to outstanding assessment tax, unpaid compounds and traffic fines. "These must be settled before reapplying for the initiative. "Once approved, they can park normally and the authorities will verify their eligibility through the registered vehicle number in the council's records." He said this after the council meeting at Wisma MBSA. However, Fauzi said, the initiative does not apply to five areas: PRIVATE parking spaces; DISABLED parking bays; SPECIAL parking spots; TWO-HOUR parking zones, and, VEHICLES parked on the roadside – not in parking boxes provided under the Road Transport Order (Provision of Parking Places) 2007 . He added that 117,202 users aged 60 and above have paid for parking under the council. "Based on Flexi Parking data, 37,817 senior users have made parking payments in MBSA's jurisdiction." He said the council hopes this will contribute to building a senior-friendly and sustainable community, in line with the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 11: to create inclusive, safe, resilient and age-friendly cities.
