Diverse committee boosts MACC credibility, says Mohd Shahar
KUALA LUMPUR: The diverse backgrounds and expertise of members in the bipartisan Special Committee on Corruption (JKmR) will add value to the committee's effectiveness, says its chairman, Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah. He said this diversity could also enhance the credibility of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Annual Report, which would be presented in due course. Mohd Shahar said the JKmR, which monitored the MACC, remained committed to fulfilling its responsibilities with integrity to ensure the agency's mandate was carried out transparently, professionally, and free from external influence. 'JKmR and MACC must respect each other's jurisdiction, remain committed to shared objectives, and prioritise transparency to preserve public trust in national governance,' he said during a meeting with MACC's top management at the commission's headquarters in Putrajaya today. The meeting was also attended by MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, along with senior directors and division heads from the MACC. During the meeting, JKmR members proposed several measures to boost MACC's credibility in its anti-corruption efforts. These included detailed strategies to improve the Corruption Perceptions Index, enhancing public perception through various communication platforms, and addressing challenges in prosecuting corruption cases.

Paya Besar MP Mohd Shahar Appointed As JKMR Chairman
PUTRAJAYA, May 5 (Bernama) -- Paya Besar Member of Parliament Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah has been appointed as Chairman of the Special Committee on Corruption (JKMR) for three years, effective April 25 this year. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), in a statement today, said that His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, had consented to the appointment on the advice of the Prime Minister by the provisions in Section 14 of the MACC Act (Act 694). The instrument of appointment was presented to Mohd Shahar by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and witnessed by MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki at the Parliament building, Kuala Lumpur today.

Shahar Abdullah appointed as Special Committee on Corruption chairman
KUALA LUMPUR: Paya Besar member of parliament Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah has been appointed chairman of the Special Committee on Corruption. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said he will serve a three-year term from April 25, 2025, to April 25, 2028. The letter of appointment was presented this morning by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Meanwhile, three new members have also been appointed to the committee for the same term. They are Senator Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, Senator Datuk Seri Professor Emeritus Dr Awang Sariyan, and Langkawi member of parliament Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah. "The appointments were made by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the advice of the prime minister, in accordance with Section 14 of the MACC Act 2009," it said in a statement. The committee now consists of seven members in total. Three existing members continue their term from Sept 15, 2023, to Sept 14, 2026. It said Batang Lupar member of parliament Mohd Shafizan Kepli was reappointed as a committee member. "The committee plays a key role in providing oversight and ensuring transparency and accountability in the nation's anti-corruption efforts." Its terms of reference include advising the prime minister on any aspect of corruption-related issues in Malaysia; examining the MACC's annual report, reviewing comments by the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board on the commission's performance under the MACC Act 2009; and seeking clarification on both the report and the board's comments.

According to the statement, the role of the JKMR members is to advise the Prime Minister on various aspects of corruption problems in the country and examine the MACC Annual Report. The JKMR's role is also to examine the comments of the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) and seek clarification and explanation on the Commission's annual report, it said. 'Hopefully, the appointment of the new JKMR members will help meet public expectations on the independence, efficiency, effectiveness, transparency, and accountability of the commission in discharging its responsibilities,' read the statement.
