Art museum owner fined RM300,000 for illegally possessing wildlife parts
KUALA LUMPUR: An art museum owner was fined RM300,000 by the Sessions Court here on Friday (July 25) for possessing various protected wildlife parts without a licence or special permit last year. Judge Mohd Zaki Mohd Salleh sentenced Yiu Shoou Rang, 66, after he pleaded guilty to eight amended charges. The court also ordered nine months' imprisonment in default of payment. Yiu subsequently paid the fine. Yiu was charged with four counts of possessing, without a special permit, protected wildlife parts, including an orangutan skull, two estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) skulls, and seven elephant tusks, all of which are fully protected species under the Second Schedule of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716). The offences were committed at a business premises in Central Market, Jalan Hang Kasturi, around 3.20pm on Jan 8, 2024. He was charged under Section 68(1)(b) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, which carries a fine of between RM50,000 and RM500,000, or imprisonment for up to three years, or both. Yiu also faced four additional charges of possessing other wildlife parts without a valid licence at the same time and location. These included 150 parts of wild boar (Sus scrofa), 10 porcupine quills and six parts of sambar deer. These charges were brought under Section 60(1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716), which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both, upon conviction. However, five additional charges previously brought against Yiu were taken into consideration by the court under Section 171A of the Criminal Procedure Code. Deputy Public Prosecutor Suhaila Rashid urged the court to impose a sentence commensurate with the severity of the offence to serve as a deterrent. In mitigation, defence counsel Teh See Khoon pleaded for a lenient sentence, submitting that the items in question were part of an Orang Asli collection intended for museum display. - Bernama

Man jailed, wife fined for child abuse with durian husk in KL
KUALA LUMPUR: A man was sentenced to five years in jail while his wife was fined RM18,000 by the Sessions Court after both admitted to abusing their seven-year-old daughter with a durian husk. Judge Mohd Zaki Mohd Salleh ruled that Bunyamin Sukiman, 42, would serve his term from the date of arrest on July 18. His wife, Yorlini Abdullah Umar, 32, faces three months in jail if she fails to pay the fine. The court also placed the couple on a three-year good behaviour bond without surety and ordered them to complete 12 months of community service. The abuse occurred at their home in Jalan Ampang on July 16, where the girl was allegedly beaten, had her ear twisted, and her hand injured by a durian husk. The case came to light after the victim's school investigated an unrelated incident involving a cut headscarf. During questioning, the child revealed the abuse, including having her hand pressed with a durian husk and soaked in warm salted water. Deputy public prosecutor Ravindejit Kaur argued for a harsh penalty, stating the act was 'extreme cruelty' and that children deserve protection, not violence. Man Jailed Five Years, Wife Fined RM18,000 For Abusing Daughter With Durian Husk
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- A man was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, while his wife was fined RM18,000 by the Sessions Court here today after both pleaded guilty to abusing their daughter with a durian husk last week. Judge Mohd Zaki Mohd Salleh ordered Bunyamin Sukiman, 42, to serve his sentence from the date of arrest on July 18, while his wife, Yorlini Abdullah Umar, 32, will face three months' imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine. The court also ordered both accused to be placed on a three-year good behaviour bond without surety and to perform 12 months of community service. According to the charge, Yorlini, the biological mother of the victim, and Bunyamin, the child's stepfather, were accused of abusing the girl, aged seven years and 11 months, causing injuries to her body at a residence in Jalan Ampang here around 6 pm on July 16. They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, the senior assistant for Student Affairs at the victim's school had called her in over an allegation that she had cut another student's headscarf. The girl was found to be innocent, but during the investigation, she disclosed that she had been beaten, had her ear twisted by both her mother and stepfather, and punched by the man. She further revealed that they had placed her hand on the floor and slammed a durian husk on it, causing injury. The wounded hand was then soaked in warm salted water, and tied with adhesive tape and left overnight. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Ravindejit Kaur urged the court to impose a severe sentence, stressing that the victim, a minor, was entitled to protection, not violence.
