Man dies, baby in motorcycle basket critically injured in Besut crash
BESUT: A man was killed and his one-year-old son critically injured after their motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car along Jalan Gong Medang here last night.
The victim, Mohd Zulshahriel Mohd Zalfari, 41, was reportedly thrown into a roadside drain and died at the scene, while his son, who had been placed in the motorcycle's front basket, was seriously hurt after being flung onto the road.
Besut district deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Md Sani Md Saleh said the injured child was initially taken to Hospital Besut and later transferred to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu for further treatment.
He said police received information about the crash involving a motorcycle ridden by the father and son and a Perodua Myvi at 10pm.
"Preliminary investigations revealed the accident happened when the motorcycle, coming from Lorong Atas Gong, was exiting a junction and turning right onto the main road.
"At the same time, a Perodua Myvi travelling from Tembila towards Kampung Raja was unable to avoid the motorcycle and collided with its rear," he said in a statement today.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Md Sani urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Mohd Zulkifli Razak at 019-4475767.
