Dallas Wings secure first win of season in Paige Bueckers return to Connecticut

Paige Bueckers returned to a familiar place to get the first win of her WNBA career. The No. 1 pick in the draft by the Dallas Wings had lost the first four games as a pro and couldn't remember a longer losing streak in her storied basketball career. She wouldn't let it get to five. Bueckers scored a season-best 21 points in the Wings' 109-87 victory over Connecticut on Tuesday night. "Felt great just to play like that as a team and obviously that environment is special to me," the former UConn star said. "To play like that as a team and put a full 40 minutes together. ... It felt good to be out there." Getty Images It's been a week of homecomings for Bueckers as the former UConn star played in the state of Connecticut for the first time since helping the Huskies win the school's 12th national championship nearly two months ago. Six days before the game in Connecticut, she played in Minnesota, where she grew up. With the victory, Bueckers remained unbeaten at Mohegan Sun Arena, where the Sun plays their home games. She went 15-0 at the arena, including winning four Big East championships while playing for UConn. "I don't think I ever lost here. I was trying to carry that into tonight," Bueckers said. Tuesday night was like a home game for Buckers, who received a loud ovation from the sellout crowd when introduced before the game. Many fans were wearing her No. 5 jersey from UConn and Dallas, cheering everything she did. The St. Teresa's basketball team was sitting on the bench pregame and screamed with jubilation when Bueckers ran onto the court. Bueckers gave them and the rest of the crowd — which included a few of her former Huskies teammates — a lot to cheer about. She got Dallas (1-4) going early with seven points and four assists in the opening quarter as she was aggressively attacking for baskets or finding open teammates. She finished the half with 15 points as the Wings took control, going up by 14 points at the break. Getty Images "She just continues to do things that should be surprising but aren't," Wings coach Chris Koclanes said. "I take a step back to just appreciate the type of player and even more so the type of person that she is." Bueckers raises awareness about student hunger A day earlier, Bueckers posted on Instagram a video of a surprise meeting that Verizon put together of people who had benefited from a food security project that the guard started in Minnesota in 2022. As Chegg's first student-athlete brand ambassador, Bueckers worked to raise awareness about student hunger, an issue that had worsened due to the pandemic. "It was a total, complete surprise just for them to bring in those people who have been a part of my story and been a part of my journey," Bueckers said. "It means so much to give back, to see the impact firsthand. It's truly inspiring. I was extremely grateful for that." Koclanes has been impressed with Bueckers' mental approach to the game on and off the court and how much she invests in it. "She wants to really be a great leader and is committing time into developing those skills to help this culture and her teammates as a rookie," he said. "So that's been really impressive on the floor. I think you take for granted some of the things she's able to do. But extremely high IQ, she's picked up, you know, concepts and reads very early. And then it's just, you know, she'll adapt to the physicality." Dallas returns on June 20 to play at Connecticut for a second and final time this season.

Bueckers is triumphant in return to Connecticut, leading Wings past the Sun for 1st win of season

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Paige Bueckers had a triumphant return to Connecticut by scoring a career-best 21 points as Dallas won its first game of the season, beating the Sun 109-87 on Tuesday night. Bueckers, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, shot 8 for 10 from the field and finished with seven assists and five rebounds. Bueckers remained perfect at Mohegan Sun Arena, where the Sun play their home games. She went 15-0 at the building in college while playing for UConn, including winning four Big East championships with the Huskies. Many of her former teammates were in attendance Tuesday night. She received a loud ovation from the sellout crowd when introduced before the game, and many fans were wearing her No. 5 jersey from UConn and Dallas. Bueckers got Dallas (1-4) going early with seven points and four assists in the opening quarter as she was aggressively attacking for baskets or finding opening teammates. Connecticut (0-5) led by one at the end of the first quarter, however, thanks to the play of Bria Hartley and Tina Charles. Dallas took over behind Bueckers in the second and led 56-42 at the half. Arike Ogunbowale took over in the third quarter, scoring 15 points in the period after having only two in the first half. She helped the Wings build their lead to 88-74 heading into the final period. Connecticut never threatened after that, and Bueckers left for good with just over four minutes left in the game. Tina Charles led the Sun with 27 points and Marina Mabrey added 19. The game also marked the return of former Sun players DiJonai Carrington and Ty Harris, who were traded to the Wings in the offseason. The two received a warm ovation from the crowd when they were introduced before the game and a welcome back video played on the scoreboard. Carrington finished with 16 points and Harris was scoreless, but had three assists. ___ AP WNBA:

Billy Joel ‘has no plans to retire despite ongoing health battles'

Billy Joel is said to have no plans to retire despite his ongoing health battles. The 76-year-old singer has paused live performances following a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, but those close to him say he is determined to return to the stage after the five-time Grammy winner, whose hits include 'Piano Man' and 'Big Shot', announced on 23 May that he would be cancelling all remaining concert dates due to the condition, which causes a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Symptoms can also include issues with hearing, vision and balance but despite the setback, sources insist Billy is focused on recovery and remains committed to performing. 'He is happiest while performing,' a music industry insider told People. They added: 'Music is, has been and will always be his life. He's not ready to retire.' A second source told the outlet: 'Billy is not retiring and hopes to be able to resume performing as his recovery progresses.' The singer, who is receiving treatment and undergoing physical therapy, confirmed the news in a statement shared via Instagram. 'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,' he said. Billy added: 'I'm thankful for the excellent care I'm receiving and fully committed to prioritising my health. I'm grateful for the support from fans during this time and look forward to the day when I can once again take the stage.' The crooner's wife, 42-year-old Alexis Roderick, echoed the sentiment in a post on 26 May, saying online: 'Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the centre of our world.' She also shared a photograph of the couple with their daughters Della, eight, and Remy, six. Alexis added: 'We are hopeful for his recovery. We look forward to seeing you all in the future.' Billy's daughter Alexa Ray Joel, 38, also voiced her support in an Instagram post shared on 24 May, captioning a painting of the two: 'We love you and we got you, Pop!' In February, Billy stumbled and fell backwards during a show at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut after spinning a microphone stand. He quickly recovered and completed the set, but in March he postponed all shows through June, citing a medical condition requiring physical therapy. In a statement at the time, he said: 'While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans.' Billy had been scheduled to perform in cities including New York, Liverpool, New Orleans and Washington, D.C., with dates running through 2026.

Paige Bueckers to make first Connecticut appearance as pro since UConn's championship

It's been a week of homecomings for Paige Bueckers as the former UConn star will play in the state of Connecticut for the first time since helping the Huskies win the school's 12th national championship nearly two months ago. Last week was a chance to play in her home state of Minnesota. Now she'll be trying to get the Dallas Wings their first victory of the season as they face the winless Sun on Tuesday night. "It will be weird not stepping on this court with a UConn uniform," Bueckers told reporters Monday. "It will be something I enjoy with a new team and new organization. It's great to be back, great to continue on this journey." Bueckers has never lost at Mohegan Sun Arena, where the Sun plays their home games. She went 15-0 at the arena, including winning four Big East championships while playing for UConn. She looked right at home during shootaround Tuesday morning, hitting the halfcourt shot at the end of practice. Something she's done nearly every time in her rookie season so far. "I have some great memories here. I don't think we lost here in my UConn career so we'll try to carry those vibes over to this game and approach it with a winning mentality," Bueckers said. Paige Bueckers Richard W. Rodriguez / AP Despite the Wings' 0-4 record to start the season, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft has gotten off to a strong beginning to her career. She leads the team in points (13.0), assists (6.3) and steals (1.8). "She just continues to do things that should be surprising but aren't," Wings coach Chris Koclanes said. "I take a step back to just appreciate, the type of player and even more so the type of person that she is." The rookie coach has been impressed with Bueckers' mental approach to the game and how much she invests into it. "She wants to really be a great leader and is committing time into developing those skills to help this culture and her teammates as a rookie." he said. "So that's been really impressive on the floor. I think you take for granted some of the things she's able to do. But extremely high IQ, she's picked up, you know, concepts and reads, very early. And then it's just, you know, she'll adapt to the physicality." She had 12 points and 10 assists in her first homecoming game against the Lynx at the Target Center last Wednesday. "We're not setting expectations for ourselves, just taking it day by day," Bueckers said. "Setting expectations limits you in what you can accomplish. We're trying to grow in the film room, grow in the weight room, grow on the court and grow with our chemistry. Stay optimistic, stay positive, don't let the last game affect the next game. Learn from the past and have it motivate you to be better." Dallas returns on June 20 to play at Connecticut for a second and final time this season.
