Warm welcome to the wilderness: New visitor center opens at Mohican State Park

The new visitor center is open at Mohican State Park near the campground entrance from Ohio 3 in Loudonville. The visitor center will be open year-round for the park's roughly 1 million annual guests, according to Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. "We're excited to officially open this incredible new space at Mohican State Park," Mertz said. "This new visitor center serves as both a gateway and a gathering place, helping guests discover the natural wonders of the park while offering comfort, accessibility and education." The project began in June 2024 with a budget of $3.6 million. 'A smooth and inviting arrival' The 5,205-square-foot building features a central exhibit hall designed to showcase the park's natural and cultural history, according to a news release prepared by Karina Cheung, an ODNR spokesperson. Two wings extend from the main space, offering restrooms, a retail area, an indoor fireplace and seating area and an interactive children's space. Entry points at both ends provide easy access from the nearby campground and main parking area. A secure vestibule allows for off-hours use of restrooms and drinking fountains. "The visitor center's layout and landscaping create a smooth and inviting arrival," Cheung noted. "A gently-sloped entrance ramp and open-air porches lead into a space that is as functional as it is beautiful, making it easy for guests of all abilities to access and enjoy the facility." 'Meaningful, memorable experiences for every visitor' The center was built to enhance Mohican State Park's reputation as one of Ohio's premier outdoor destinations. Mohican features miles of hiking trails, views of the Mohican State Scenic River, abundant fishing, a historic lodge and other outdoor recreational opportunities. "Ohio truly is the heart of adventure, and we want everyone to have a first-class experience when visiting one of our state parks," Gov. Mike DeWine said. "Mohican State Park has so much to offer, and the new visitor center serves as a perfect welcome point for guests to learn about the region's natural history." The visitor center could become the new anchor for the greater Mohican area. "This project truly reflects our commitment to creating meaningful, memorable experiences for every visitor," Mohican State Park Manager Jenny Roar said. "From the interpretive displays to the outdoor gathering spaces and welcoming porches, everything here was built with purpose − to inspire, educate and welcome." ztuggle@ 419-564-3508 This article originally appeared on Mansfield News Journal: Mohican State Park visitor center opened by ODNR in Loudonville Solve the daily Crossword
