Rumours that Phil Collins is in hospice are ‘completely incorrect', says his rep
A spokesperson for musician Phil Collins is setting the record straight about the former Genesis frontman's health. Although it's unclear how or where these reports started, rumours have been spreading like wildfire that the 74-year-old drummer is in hospice care due to terminal illness. 'Phil Collins in hospice? So, help me God,' one fan wrote on X. 'If Phil Collins goes next, I'm done with this planet,' another added. However, Phil's spokesperson has denied these claims, stating they, 'are completely incorrect'. Phil is indeed in hospital, but it's for knee surgery. 'He's undergoing a procedure in the medical ward related to his knees – nothing more, nothing less,' his rep says. He revealed that although he's considered returning to his studio to create new music, his deteriorating physical condition has become a barrier. 'I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore,' he said in February. 'The thing is, I've been sick. I mean very sick.' In his documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First, released in December last year, he revealed that his deteriorating health had left him unable to pick up drumsticks. 'It's still kind of sinking in a bit,' he said. 'I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.' He said he'd been drumming since he was five, growing up in Hounslow, London, so losing that ability was extremely hard. Phil's health issues date back to 2007 when he suffered a spinal injury that caused serious nerve damage. In 2017 he was forced to cancel two shows after falling in his hotel room and hitting his head on a chair, requiring stitches to a severe cut near his eye. His fall was caused by foot drop, a neurological condition that developed after his back surgery and for which he now wears orthopaedic shoes. He also suffers from acute pancreatitis, a condition in which the pancreas becomes inflamed and swollen, as well as type 2 diabetes. In 2022 he retired. However, before hanging up his sticks he made one last appearance that year alongside bandmates Mike Rutherford (74) and Tony Banks (75) for Genesis' final show on The Last Domino? Tour in London. During the show, he performed seated while his son, Nicholas (24), from his marriage to ex-wife Orianne Cevey (51), took over the drumming. 'Tonight is a very special night. It's the last stop of our tour, and it's the last show for Genesis,' he said during the set at London's The O2 arena. Phil Collins explains why he's in hospital and debunks hospice claims
A representative for Phil Collins has assured fans that the 74-year-old music legend is not in hospice care, despite recent rumors. Instead, the former drummer and frontman of British rock band Genesis is currently in the hospital after undergoing knee surgery, his spokesperson confirmed to The Independent. Last week, unfounded rumors that the retired musician was on his deathbed went viral online. It's unclear what sparked them; however, they came months after the eight-time Grammy-winning artist revealed that he was 'very sick.' 'I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens but I'm not hungry for it anymore,' Collins told Mojo magazine in February after his final concert with the group at London's O2 Arena. The concert was billed as the band's last ever together and saw Collins say goodbye to his fans. 'The thing is. I've been sick, I mean very sick,' he said. 'Phil wasn't in as great a shape as he used to be, but they did a great job,' founding Genesis member Peter Gabriel added. Though Gabriel didn't perform with the rock group, he explained: 'Me going was a rite of passage, really. I'd been part of the creation of Genesis, so I wanted to be there at the end.' Collins announced his retirement from live shows in 2022, after having previously said he can 'barely hold a drumstick' following a serious spinal injury in 2007. The injury damaged vertebrae in his upper neck and caused lasting nerve damage. 'I'm kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating because I'd love to be playing up there with my son,' he said in a September 2021 interview with BBC Breakfast. Collins' 24-year-old drummer son, Nic, filled in for his father during Genesis's final The Last Domino tour in 2021. Nic regularly drums for the band Better Strangers. Collins, who has been married three times, is also a father to four other children: actor Joely, 52; drummer Simon, 48; Emily in Paris star Lily, 36; and soccer player Mathew, 20. He was married to his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, from 1975 to 1980, followed by his second marriage to Jill Tavelman from 1984 to 1996, and his third wife, Orianne Cevey, from 1999 to 2008. 'I'm not hungry for it anymore': Genesis star Phil Collins on returning to music
Phil Collins has reportedly lost interest in music. The Genesis star spent the band's final tour several years ago singing from a seated position while his son handled percussion duties. Now, shedding light on his present physical condition and future plans for a comeback, the singer said he has no inclination to return to a recording studio in any capacity due to physical limitations that have taken away his desire to create new music. In an interview with Mojo Magazine he said, "I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I've been sick, I mean, very sick." A spinal injury in 2007 caused Collins severe nerve damage, and after a back operation, he suffered 'drop foot', a condition which makes it difficult to walk. He also suffered a head injury in 2017. His son Nic played drums when Genesis did a final tour that ended in 2022. In an interview in 2021, Collins announced that he wouldn't be returning to drumming on the group's farewell tour. He said, "I can barely hold a stick with this hand. I'm kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating." Collins last released an album called Going Back in 2010. His last album of original material, Testify, was released in 2002.
