THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Gives Mole Man a Surprising New Role in the MCU — GeekTyrant

Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps wastes no time diving into the team's beginnings, and it does so with an exciting nod to the comics. The movie opens with a montage of their origin story and their very first showdown with Mole Man. Spoilers ahead! In an epic moment straight out of classic Marvel lore, he sinks the Pan Am Building in Midtown Manhattan. The team, decked out in their blue-and-black costumes, eventually brings down Giganto and captures Harvey Elder, better known to comic fans as Mole Man. But this isn't the last time we see him. Later, it's revealed that Sue Storm has brokered a peace agreement between Subterranea and the surface world through her work with the United Nations. After the Silver Surfer drops his ominous warning, Harvey reappears, watching the team's press conference. In an unexpected twist, Sue invites him to the Baxter Building during the film's final act. With Galactus coming, and New York City in danger, the city needs to evacuate fast. Sue convinces Harvey to let millions take refuge in Subterranea, but not before a sharp exchange of words between him and the Human Torch, with Mister Fantastic delivering one of the film's more humorous lines by calling him 'Mole Man.' Once the city descends underground, Harvey steps into an almost heroic role, opening his subterranean world to the people of the surface, including Natasha Lyonne's character, Rachel Rozman. There were rumors of bigger arcs for both characters, but those plans were apparently trimmed down to keep this reboot under two hours. As for the so-called Moloids, Marvel took a grounded approach. Instead of the monstrous creatures from the comics, they're regular people who joined Harvey in building a life below New York. They wear mining gear and goggles that faintly resemble the big, bug-eyed look of their comic counterparts. It's a clever visual nod, though some fans might find it a little underwhelming. What's surprising is how the MCU flips the script on Mole Man. Rather than making him a one-note villain, the film portrays him as a reluctant ally, which I appreciated. This move adds a refreshing dynamic and sets up intriguing possibilities for the future. Plus, with name-drops like Wizard, the Mad Thinker, and Diablo sprinkled throughout the story, Marvel clearly has plenty of villains waiting in the wings. Whether we'll see more of Paul Walter Hauser as Mole Man remains to be seen, but his role here serves a very practical purpose. By sheltering New Yorkers underground during the Galactus battle, Marvel sidesteps any Man of Steel-style backlash over mass casualties. I liked how they handled Mole Man in the movie, and I hope that we get to see more of the character.

First Look at Paul Walter Hauser as Mole Man in THE FANTASTIC FOUR

Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor Paul Walter Hauser ( Black Bird , Richard Jewell ) is about to make his MCU debut as Mole Man in The Fantastic Four: First Steps , and we have a first look photo at the character for you to check out. In a new interview with USA Today, Hauser chatted about his subterranean villainous character, alluding to the fact that this version of Harvey Rupert Elder, aka Mole Man, won't actually be a full-blown bad guy in this movie. Hauser explained, 'He is living sort of in the shadows like a villain would, but he's also taking care of an entire race of people and trying to live his life without being bothered.' Director Matt Shakman added, 'It's a power struggle, but within that, there are compromises and alliances made. He's all about community, and that's why Sue and Harvey have a good relationship and they get along. They understand each other.' Directed by WandaVision 's Matt Shakman, Hauser is joined in the cast by Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm), with a supporting lineup that includes Natasha Lyonne and Sarah Niles in yet-to-be-revealed roles, as well as bad guys Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) and Galactus ( Ralph Ineson ). The Fantastic Four: First Steps lands in theaters and IMAX on July 25th.

The MCU's Mole Man Revealed in THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Comic — GeekTyrant

Marvel Studios just dropped an interesting reveal ahead of The Fantastic Four: First Steps , and it comes from a tie-in comic. Fantastic Four: First Steps #1, written by Matt Fraction with art by Mark Buckingham, gives fans their first clear look at Paul Walter Hauser's role in the upcoming film. Hauser, best known for Richard Jewell and his scene-stealing roles in Cobra Kai and Cruella , is officially playing Harvey Elder, better known to Marvel fans as the Mole Man. But don't expect a one-to-one adaptation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's 1961 version. This new Mole Man is less of a mad scientist with a grudge and more… well, revolutionary. In the original comics, Elder was a disgraced scientist who discovered a hidden world beneath the Earth's surface, Subterranea, and ruled over it with armies of monsters and mole-like humanoids called Moloids. He wanted revenge on the surface world that laughed him out of academia. But in this MCU iteration, Hauser's Elder is reimagined with a more politically charged backstory. The comic reveals he's a union organizer turned politician, still the leader of Subterranea, but now it's framed as an egalitarian commune of people (and monsters) seeking a better life underground. His uprising isn't driven by vengeance, but by desperation. Surface construction threatens the stability of their underground society, and Elder fights back to protect it. The comic itself plays with 1960s comic nostalgia, packed with retro ads and a Human Torch fan club, but the story grounds itself in the MCU. We see the newly powered FF respond to Elder's attack on Manhattan in what mirrors their first mission. Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 hits comic shops on July 9, 2025, and while it functions as an in-universe promo from the Future Foundation, it's also our clearest window yet into the vibe, politics, and character tweaks Marvel Studios si bringing to story.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Villain Giganto Revealed in… a Little Caesar's Commercial? — GeekTyrant

Well, this is a first. Marvel fans just got their first look at The Fantastic Four: First Steps ' surprise villain and it came in the form of a Little Caesar's ad. While a pizza employee raves about their latest deal, they're suddenly interrupted by none other than Giganto, an oversized, monstrous creature straight out of early Marvel canon. Giganto isn't exactly a household name like Doom or Galactus, but longtime readers will recognize the beast immediately. The monster made his debut all the way back in Fantastic Four #1 in 1961, part of a group of mutated Deviant creations. He's most often associated with Mole Man, the first major villain the Fantastic Four ever faced. While Mole Man hasn't been officially confirmed for the movie, the appearance of Giganto definitely points in that direction, and fans are already speculating that this is Marvel laying the groundwork. For a promo spot tied to cheap pizza, it's surprisingly rich in Marvel lore. Giganto towering over a crumbling city while the cashier continues hyping stuffed crust? It's peak MCU marketing weirdness. 'Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet.' Produced by Kevin Feige, with executive producers Louis D'Esposito, Grant Curtis, and Tim Lewis, First Steps is shaping up to be a true throwback to the roots of Marvel storytelling, complete with Deviant monsters and atomic-age design. The score comes from Michael Giacchino, and fans can expect something big, bold, and maybe definitly strange from this movie. The Fantastic Four: First Steps opens in theaters on July 25, 2025. The cast include Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who will all return in Avengers: Doomsday , hitting theaters in December 2026. But for now, the spotlight belongs to Giganto… and apparently, pizza.
