The MolinaCares Accord and Molina Healthcare of Nevada Present Over $700,000 to the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine to Serve Under-Resourced Communities
The MolinaCares Accord ('MolinaCares'), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Nevada ('Molina'), today announced over $700,000 in grants to the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine ('UNR Med') in support of six programs focused on enhancing access to care, especially in areas of Nevada with shortages of health professionals. Health workforce shortages are particularly acute in rural areas of Nevada. Through this grant, MolinaCares is supporting UNR Med as it works to increase and strengthen the health care workforce through education and innovative programs to recruit and retain providers. 'Molina's investment in UNR Med lays the groundwork to address health workforce shortages,' said Dr. Nima Alinejad, chief medical officer of Molina Healthcare of Nevada. 'By supporting new and expanded workforce development initiatives, we are not only addressing current gaps but also building a sustainable pipeline of providers who will serve communities across Nevada for years to come.' As part of its latest partnership with the University, MolinaCares will be providing support to UNR Med and the Nevada State Office of Rural Health, as well as the School of Public Health, and the Community Behavioral Health Collaborative to help fund the following programs: Nevada Health Service Corps to fund 10-18 additional loan repayment contracts for providers working in areas where health professional shortages exist; Nevada Flex Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Supplement Project to expand the EMS workforce in seven Critical Access Hospitals and rural communities by funding group and one-on-one virtual trainings to EMS agencies and staff; Project ECHO Nevada to increase the capacity of health care and education professionals by providing a series of trainings, including a new training for law enforcement and first responders; Physician Assistant Studies Program to bolster opportunities for rural clerkships for students, increase student exposure to rural medicine, and augment learning opportunities in rural communities; Community Behavioral Health Collaborative Supervisor Development Program to increase access to internship opportunities that provide quality training for licensed professionals as they prepare to train the next generation of marriage and family therapists and clinical professional counselors; and Board of Regents, Nevada System of High Education to add more provider trainings that explain sensitive disease subjects. 'The health programs we provide through UNR Med are a lifeline for many Nevadans, especially those living in rural communities,' said Gerald Ackerman, assistant dean of rural programs at UNR Med. 'Molina understands the critical importance of ensuring our residents have access to health care and we are grateful for their ongoing support so we can better serve our fellow neighbors, friends, and families.' This partnership is largely funded through The MolinaCares Accord's $1.4 million commitment to Nevada to improve access to care, bringing its total investment in Nevada to over $5 million since 2022. The MolinaCares Accord and Molina Healthcare of Nebraska Donate $50,000 to Address Health Disparities and Workforce Shortages in Latino Communities
OMAHA, Neb., May 20, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The MolinaCares Accord ("MolinaCares"), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Nebraska ("Molina"), presented a $50,000 grant to the Latino Center of the Midlands in support of its Siembra Salud program. The initiative addresses health equity and workforce shortages through internships and gardening projects for Latino families. According to recent Community Health Needs Assessments from CHI Health and Children's Nebraska, Latino residents are two-and-a-half times more likely to report "fair" or "poor" physical health, more than three times as likely to report "fair" or "poor" mental health, and three times more likely to report food insecurity. Among low-income residents who lack health insurance, one in four is Latino. Siembra Salud, Spanish for "sowing health", uses a two-pronged strategy to close these gaps. Through internships, young people work with families and gain hands-on experience in health care, social work, and mental health careers. They also meet Latino health care professionals and complete job-shadowing opportunities. Through gardening projects, families learn about nutrition and connect with physical and mental health resources. Workshops teach not only gardening skills, but lessons on nutrition, health resources, and mental health awareness. "MolinaCares is proud to support the Siembra Salud program to create more equitable outcomes for those in the Latino community," said Frank Clepper, plan president for Molina Healthcare of Nebraska. "Addressing social determinants of health, like nutrition and employment, is critical for improving the overall well-being of a community." The Latino Center of the Midlands plans to employ at least 10 paid interns each year. Qualified interns can become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA). It's anticipated that 200 people per year will participate in Siembra Salud's gardening projects. "We extend our gratitude to Molina and MolinaCares for their generous support of the Latino Center of the Midlands," said Albert Varas, president and CEO of Latino Center of the Midlands. "This funding will empower us to address critical health disparities and workforce shortages through our Siembra Salud program and its internship branch. Together, we are fostering a healthier, more equitable community by providing hands-on learning opportunities, nurturing future health leaders, and ensuring that our families have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive."
