Views sought on future of two playparks in Chepstow

Monmouthshire County Council has earmarked Western Avenue and Bulwark Parks in Chepstow to be upgrades after it received a share of the £5million allocated by the Welsh Government for improving playgrounds and play facilities. And it has launched a consultation to hear what locals would like to see happen at the two parks. MCC's cabinet member for equalities and engagement Cllr Angela Sandles said: "Your views will help us shape the development of both parks in Chepstow. "As a council, we aim to develop the parks to provide the best opportunities for the children to build confidence and have a great time at the same time." Over the summer, as part of the consultation, the council will also be speaking to children and young people participating in MonLife activities to hear their views on the plans.

Monmouthshire County Council hosts Playmaker Conferences

More than 650 primary school children from across Abergavenny, Chepstow and Caldicot attended Monmouthshire County Council's annual PlayMaker Conferences, led by the MonLife Sports Development Team. The programme supports primary school pupils as they begin their leadership journeys and celebrates their progress through the PlayMaker scheme. Councillor Angela Sandles, Monmouthshire County Council's cabinet member for engagement and equalities, said: "The PlayMaker Conference is a wonderful opportunity to engage with our young leaders. "It's so fantastic to see these young people develop and grow from Playmakers in year 5 to volunteering in youth work in secondary school and then often starting their careers in sports development in Monmouthshire. "It's an inspiring journey, and a joy to see." Workshops at the conference focused on key topics including play development, active travel, pupil voice, healthy eating, sustainability and water safety. The events were supported by MonLife, the MonLife Leadership Academy, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and County in the Community, with facilities provided by local comprehensive schools and Abergavenny Rugby Club at Bailey Park. The MonLife Sports Development Team has delivered the Sports Leaders PlayMaker Award throughout the academic year, involving nearly all primary schools in Monmouthshire. Pupils who complete the award contribute to the wellbeing of their school communities by supporting positive activities and leadership. A total of 43 Leadership Academy volunteers supported the events throughout the week, contributing 172 hours of service. The Monmouth Cluster Primary Schools' session was postponed for this academic year due to the weather.

Abergavenny Leisure Centre to close for improvement works

The centre will be closed from July 21 until mid-August for work to take place. The closure is part of the second phase of the school and leisure centre improvement works, which began in Easter 2025. The next stage of development involves installing new utilities and significant construction work, which must be done during school holidays due to the project's scale. These upgrades are intended to ensure the facility's long-term sustainability and operational efficiency. Monmouthshire County Council's cabinet member for equalities and engagement, councillor Angela Sandles, said: "We understand the importance of the leisure centre to our members and the potential disruption to their routine, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. "I thank all our members for their understanding throughout the period." Aiming to minimise the impact of this closure, the leisure centre will not process membership direct debit payments in July. Annual members will have their memberships extended to account for the closure. The swimming pool will remain closed beyond the leisure centre's reopening date, and updates on the specific reopening date will be provided on the centre's website, social media channels, and the MonLife app. Families with children enrolled in swimming lessons will not be charged in July or August. Further communication will follow regarding lessons starting again in September. MonLife will continue to provide summer holiday programmes in Abergavenny. Updates regarding The Monmouthshire Games and Active Play will be released soon. The Food and Fun Scheme in Abergavenny will also take place this summer, although the location is yet to be confirmed. MonLife is currently considering a limited provision of fitness classes in Abergavenny. Further information will be provided once details are confirmed. Members of the public are appreciated for their patience and continued support throughout this period. For regular updates and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs), people are encouraged to check the MonLife website or the centre's social media channels.
