Yankees Predicted to Make Infield Trade After Jazz Chisholm Jr. News
Yankees Predicted to Make Infield Trade After Jazz Chisholm Jr. News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. All signs currently point to New York Yankees slugger Jazz Chisholm playing third base, not second, when he returns from an oblique injury next month. Advertisement What would happen, then, if the Yankees land Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yoán Moncada ahead of the trade deadline? CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson recently proposed the Yankees should acquire Moncada, a former Chicago White Sox top prospect. Although Moncada enters Friday hitting only .228, he's mashed five home runs with a .812 OPS in 108 plate appearances. Moncada, who turned 30 earlier this week, is on track for his most home runs and best OPS since 2019, when he finished 21st in AL MVP voting. "He's having a heck of a rebound season," Anderson wrote, "hitting the ball hard and on a line while drawing his share of walks." Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yoán MoncadaDenis Poroy-Imagn Images Although the Angels haven't officially waved the white flag on 2025 just yet, Moncada is a veteran infielder on a one-year, prove-it deal. Historically speaking, teams around or under .500 part ways with those types of players at the deadline; the Angels sit at 25-30 ahead of a three-game set with the Cleveland Guardians. Advertisement It's interesting to consider how and where Moncada would fit into the Yankees' infield plans. Veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is having a stellar season, and Anthony Volpe remains entrenched at shortstop. Yankees manager Aaron Boone appears committed to keeping two-time batting champion DJ LeMahieu at second base, hence why Chisholm is moving back to third. Where does that leave Moncada? He's almost exclusively been a starter since 2018. Transitioning from an everyday player to a platoon hitter or full-time bench bat likely won't be easy. Moncada also lacks the versatility that other trade targets, such as Washington Nationals veteran Amed Rosario, would immediately offer the Yankees. He's only played third base the last seven seasons, outside of a few starts at DH. Advertisement Moncada is certainly an intriguing player to consider, but the Yankees might be better looking elsewhere for an infield bat—unless, of course, the dreaded injury bug strikes. Cubs Called Trade Fit for 98-HR Slugger at Position of Uncertainty
Cubs Called Trade Fit for 98-HR Slugger at Position of Uncertainty originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Third base has been a weak spot for the Chicago Cubs in 2025, despite the mild resurgence of top prospect Matt Shaw in recent weeks. Advertisement Since being called back up in mid-May, Shaw has raised his MLB batting average from .172 up to .250. The 23-year-old third baseman has also knocked in 3 RBI over that span, with 13 total hits and 5 doubles. Notably, Shaw has stolen 5 bases and scored 6 runs since his most recent promotion, with 3 walks compared to 7 strikeouts. Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yoan Moncada launches a home run at Angel Stadium in A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Although Shaw, a former No. 13 overall pick, has calmed concerns surrounding the disastrous start to his major league career, the Cubs cannot be certain that he'll keep his average up and his strikeouts down. On that note, CBS Sports staff writer R.J. Anderson suggested a potential solution for Chicago at third base, should Shaw falter again. That player is veteran slugger Yoan Moncada, the current starting third baseman of the Los Angeles Angels. Advertisement "It's to be seen if the Angels fall far enough from the race to consider selling off pieces," Anderson acknowledged. "I'm including Moncada here because I'm skeptical about Los Angeles' chances (based both on their roster and their run differential)." "[Moncada is] having a heck of a rebound season," the MLB writer continued, noting that the veteran slugger is "hitting the ball hard and on a line while drawing his share of walks." Anderson identified the Cubs as a trade "fit" for Moncada, if he's moved, along with the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees. Moncada signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Angels this offseason, so he'd make for a simple rental from a financial standpoint. Advertisement Having just turned 30 years old on May 27, Moncada is batting .228 with 5 home runs and 18 RBI. He'd provide more pop than Shaw, despite a slightly lower on-base percentage (.333 compared to Shaw's .343) and less speed. Moncada has launched 98 home runs throughout his MLB career, tallying 357 RBI and 163 doubles. He has a career batting average of .253, along with a cumulative on-base percentage of .331 and an OPS of .757. 'Rebound' Third Baseman Would Fill Yankees' Huge Roster Void
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees are running out of time to address their third base issues this season. Fortunately for them, there will be some intriguing options available at the trade deadline. It's expected Brian Cashman and company will make a move then after the internal hopes have sputtered. R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports thinks the Yankees would be a good fit for Yoán Moncada. "I'm including Moncada here because I'm skeptical about Los Angeles' chances (based both on their roster and their run differential). He's having a heck of a rebound season, hitting the ball hard and on a line while drawing his share of walks." Moncada just turned 30, so he still has something left in the tank that a contender like the Yankees could use. So far this season, he's hitting .228 with five home runs and 18 RBI. Moncada has also recorded a 129 OPS+ with the Angels despite the team's struggles. Baseball Savant shows Moncada to be among the best in baseball with his barrel percentage and just slightly below that in terms of exit velocity. The Angels have unlocked the hitter that scouts believed he could be despite his average not being the highest. If the Yankees were to pursue Moncada, they wouldn't have to give up much in the way of prospects. He is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, so the Angels will look to get something for him in July. The Yankees would be responsible for paying him the remainder of the $5 million he's owed this season. More MLB: Phillies Could Pursue All-Star Closer From Division Rival Ahead of Deadline

Three Players Yankees Should Target to Fill Void at Third Base
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The one position the New York Yankees did not make any major attempts to improve this offseason was third base. The plan was to move Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base and let the kids such as Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza to split time at the hot corner. Now, Cabrera is out for the season after an ankle injury and Peraza has a .158 average in 76 at-bats. Third base is a position of weakness for New York and something that will need to be addressed prior to the trade deadline. Here are three players the Yankees should go after to fill that void. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 20: Yoán Moncada #5 of the Los Angeles Angels celebrates his three-run home run against the Athletics in the top of the fifth inning at Sutter Health Park on May 20,... SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 20: Yoán Moncada #5 of the Los Angeles Angels celebrates his three-run home run against the Athletics in the top of the fifth inning at Sutter Health Park on May 20, 2025 in Sacramento, California. More Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images Yoan Moncada, Los Angeles Angels Moncada has appeared in just 26 games after beginning the season on the injured list, and he has done decent work both at the plate and in the field for the Angels. He has a .221 average with five doubles, four home runs and 17 RBIs. Impressively enough, with his low average, Moncada still boasts a .775 OPS, well above the MLB average of .710. Moncada would add a switch-hitting bat and stability at third base for the remainder of the season, both areas that New York could use if it has hopes of returning to the World Series for the second consecutive season. MONCADA MANIA IN FULL EFFECT 💥 — Los Angeles Angels (@Angels) May 21, 2025 Ryan McMahon, Colorado Rockies McMahon has already been mentioned as a trade target of both the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, meaning there is no reason the Yankees shouldn't also check in on his availability. McMahon is struggling a bit this season, hitting just .207 through 179 at-bats. The lowest he's ever hit in a full season was .240 in 2023, meaning he will need to get hot in a hurry to get up to those numbers. Being stuck on an abysmal Colorado Rockies team surely hadn't helped his case, and a change of scenery may be what McMahon needs. Also, he did reach base in four of his eight plate appearances against New York over the weekend, something the Yankees will certainly remember. Ke'Bryan Hayes, Pittsburgh Pirates Hayes is not a name that has been mentioned among trade candidates, but it is safe to assume he could be made available if Pittsburgh continues its downward spiral. Much like the other two names on the list, Hayes is having a bit of a down year, with just a .229 average and one home run in 192 at-bats. It could be similar to McMahon's situation, where a change of scenery would be extremely beneficial. His addition to the left side of the Yankees infield would give the team two Gold Glove winners on that side of the field and could help improve an aspect that New York has struggled with over the last few seasons. The Yankees should jump at the opportunity to acquire Hayes if he becomes available. More MLB: Padres Predicted to Land $50 Million Silver Slugger After Trade Decision

Kochanowicz Limits Dodgers, and Angels Turn 5 Double Plays in 6-2 Win in Freeway Series Opener
The Associated Press Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani hits a solo home run during the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday in Los Angeles. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jack Kochanowicz tossed one-run ball over 6 2/3 innings, Yoán Moncada hit a two-run homer and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 in the Freeway Series opener Friday night. The last-place Angels led 2-0 on Moncada's homer on his first pitch from Dustin May in the first inning. May hit Matthew Lugo and Tim Anderson back-to-back before Zach Neto's two-run double to left extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Kochanowicz (3-5) allowed one run, struck out five and walked four in winning back-to-back starts for the first time this season. The Dodgers closed to 4-2 on Shohei Ohtani's 16th homer off Ryan Zeferjahn in the eighth. Max Muncy's RBI double provided their first run. The Angels answered with Nolan Schanuel's two-run single that made it 6-2 in the ninth. May (1-4) gave up four runs and six hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked two. Moncada left after irritating his right thumb injury in the top of the ninth.
