Furniture, clothes and other cheap deals at Blue and Gold Mine Sale in Morgantown

: WVU Commencement starts Friday, to continue through the weekend MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — Spare and used furniture, DVDs, mugs, glasses, cookware and just about anything else you can imagine were all for sale at this year's Blue and Gold Mine Sale held at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown on Saturday. This unique United Way Fundraiser allows attendees to find antique furniture and other items that were gathered from dorms across the WVU campus and donated by residents around Morgantown. The funds raised from the sale of those items then support the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties. Essentially, the sale gives items a second life when they would otherwise have been thrown away or ended up in a landfill. 'We get all kinds of things here,' said Mon and Preston United Way Director of Development Jenna Russell. '[A] chair that came from the Mountainlair, we get full furniture sets, random things from people's apartments, all the cookware you could imagine. Pretty much anything you think you might need, we have it here.' Randolph County BOE notifies state it will be unable to balance budget During the sale, shoppers could fill a bag with whatever they wanted and walk away with a final price tag of $25. Through that, the sale has raised more than $200,000 for the United Way while keeping literal tons of would-be trash out of landfills over the 20 years the sale has been held. Bird watchers flock to Mon County for Mother's Day bird walk

MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — Around 16 bird watchers spent their Mother's Day morning observing mothers in nature as thousands of migratory birds return to West Virginia from their winter vacations in Central and South America for the breeding season in North America. Field Trip Coordinator for Mountaineer Audubon Katie Fallon took birders on an extensive bird walk through Tom's Run Preserve, a 320-acre section of forest in Monongalia County under the stewardship of the West Virginia Land Trust. 'Mother's Day is a great time to have a birdwalk because a lot of our migratory species that have been down in Central and South America for the winter are back here setting up their nesting territories, getting ready to become mothers themselves perhaps,' Fallon said. Morgantown 'Arts Walk' dates and times for 2025 The Scarlet Tanager pictured above was just one of 29 different species of birds observed during the walk. But aside from acting as a shelter for the area's wildlife, Executive Director of West Virginia Land Trust Brent Bailey explained to 12 News that Tom's Run also helps us humans as well. 'Tom's Run is a preserve that protects water, and the streams that flow off of Tom's Run go into the intake for Morgantown's drinking water supply,' Bailey said. 'By protecting land, you can protect water.' If you want to visit Tom's Run for yourself to walk its trails or go on your own birding excursion, you can find the West Virginia Land Trust's page on the preserve here. Generate Key Takeaways May 7—MORGANTOWN — By all accounts, the business end of the storm that turned out the lights in Morgantown and the surrounding area on April 19 only lasted a few minutes. But what was done in those few minutes required 475 workers, the replacement of 188 poles — including 135 in Monongalia County alone — and nearly eight miles of wire to undo. Crews restored power to 63, 600 total customers over much of the following week — first in large swaths, then in smaller, more isolated pockets. First Energy Local Engagement Specialist Krissy Michael provided the data to leadership with the city of Morgantown and the Monongalia County Commission. The commission shared it during Wednesday's regular meeting. Power outages began at about 8:30 p.m. on the Saturday evening before Easter as 60-to 70-mph wind gusts caused extensive damage to power infrastructure. Snapped poles and broken cross arms resulted in downed lines. "Our priority immediately following a storm is to clear hazards, such as downed power lines and trees blocking the roads. Hazard responders are dispatched to damaged locations, such as downed lines, to protect the public from these hazards until a line crew has arrived to make the area safe, " Michael explained. Once immediate threats are identified and made safe, Michael said the pecking order for repairs starts with the substation facilities that supply power to the lines, followed by hospitals and other critical medical, communications and emergency response agencies /facilities. After that, crews work to restore power as quickly as possible to customers, starting with areas that will restore power to the largest number of homes and businesses. "I just wanted to, again, thank Krissy and her staff for all they did to address that outage and make that public. It was a pretty big undertaking, " Commissioner Sean Sikora said. A representative of FirstEnergy said the company does not publicly share the cost of restoration efforts, but noted historical outage data shows storm activity in the first four months of 2025 has been higher in the Mon Power service area than anything the company has seen in the last decade. In other business from Wednesday's commission meeting, the body approved up to $2, 500 to match funds raised by Monongalia County students participating in the Future Problem Solving International Conference to be held next month in Bloomington, Indiana.
