This week was low-key the worst in modern video game history - Reader's Feature

A reader is disturbed by the amount of bad news in the video game world at the moment, especially as most of it involves issues that have been brewing for many months. We are in a strange situation right now with video games, where almost all the news is terrible and yet great games continue to be released. This has the side effect of masking the serious issues from many gamers, who either don't know or don't care about what's really going on. As long as games as good as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Monster Hunter Wilds are still coming out then everything must be fine, right? Wrong. What disturbed me this week, while reading the Metro, is that apart from job cuts (although they were implied) it had examples of all the biggest problems going on. What I found extra worrying is not only did they happen all at the same time but they're all long running issues that show absolutely no sign of being fixed. Perhaps the most obvious problem was the growing inevitability of £80 becoming the default price for big name games. At this point it'd be a victory if it only increases to £80, because GTA 6 will almost certainly be more. What was so awful about this week's news is that we had two big industry figures telling us that actually we shouldn't complain, we should get a second job to afford the games and just eat the cost. I wouldn't necessarily expect better from someone like Randy Pitchford, but hearing the ex-Sony guy saying that we shouldn't complain just shows how out of touch these execs and decision makers are. Increasing costs will lower the number of games people buy and that means a lot of titles and companies are just going to have the door slammed in their faces. People's money is not going to stretch as far as it used to and that is going to be a big problem for some games. Many are already predicting Marathon will either be a flop or just cancelled before it gets a chance, and it's not hard to see why. Nothing about it looks appealing and Sony seeming to be looking for any excuse to shut down Bungie completely, at the loss of hundreds of jobs. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Oh, and the reason for Bungie's downfall? Corporate greed, according to the people that used to work there. That's not exactly shocking news but there it is in black and white: all these problems could've been avoided if Bungie's bosses had thought of the company first and not themselves. But then we also had the revelation that the boss of Take-Two doesn't play video games and has no interest in trying out GTA 6, even though he totally could. This is also a massive non-surprise and probably very common in the games industry, where decisions are made on a spreadsheet and not from a place of passion or ambition. Sometimes they just seem to lack basic competence though, such as the lack of any plan for when games become too expensive and time consuming to make – a problem they must have seen coming years ago. This was illustrated perfectly this week by Hideo Kojima saying his Metal Gear spiritual sequel won't be out for five or six years, even though he announced it over a year ago. The amount of time it takes to make a game is out of control, but nobody is doing anything about it. And then to finish we had the rumour that Sony is only going to have a State of Play this summer, not a full showcase, or possibly have nothing at all in terms of not-E3 events. Thereby setting us up for another 12 months of no major announcements and only one or two releases. More Trending I don't want to get anyone down, but I do think it's important to point out that just because good games are still coming out it doesn't mean that it's not chaos behind the scenes, which ultimately is only going to lead to even greater disaster if none of the problems are dealt with. Assassin's Creed Shadows co-op mode coming in 2026 after DLC claims report

A new leak has shed light on the release date for Assassin's Creed Shadows first DLC, along with a rumoured co-op mode. Assassin's Creed Shadows may have fallen short of sales for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but it's still been a major hit for Ubisoft. Set in feudal Japan, the new instalment scored the second highest day one sales in the franchise's history. In the US, meanwhile, Assassin's Creed Shadows is the second best-selling game of the year so far, behind Monster Hunter Wilds. Ubisoft has already announced the game's first DLC, Claws Of Awaji, will release later this year, but a new report has narrowed down the release date. According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is 'targeting September 2025' for the Claws Of Awaji DLC, citing sources familiar with the game's development. However, it's claimed the DLC could be pushed back to October this year, depending on Ubisoft's release strategy for other titles. Elsewhere in the report, the previously rumoured co-op mode for Assassin's Creed Shadows, codenamed League, is said to still be in development and will launch 'sometime next year'. While this co-op mode was originally assumed to revolve around the game's two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, a source suggests it might include other characters too. 'While they're obviously central characters, there's a deeper narrative tied into the co-op that will expand the experience beyond just the two of them,' a source states. Assassin's Creed has some history with multiplayer, with the Paris-based Assassin's Creed Unity featuring dedicated co-op missions. Other games in the series have had multiplayer modes as well, like Assassin's Creed 3's wolfpack mode, but this was only really a minor distraction. More Trending As for Assassin's Creed Shadows first DLC, Claws Of Awaji takes place on the island of Awaji, where you will 'reclaim a lost treasure while avoiding the traps and ambushes of deadly new foes', according to a synopsis. It will feature a new bō weapon type for Naoe, along with new skills, gear, and abilities over the course of 10 hours. Beyond Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft is reportedly developing a multiplayer spin-off codenamed Invictus and a remake of Assassin's Creed Black Flag. Ports of both Assassin's Creed Mirage and Shadows are also apparently on the way for the Switch 2. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, and sign-up to our newsletter. 'Monster Hunter Wilds' announces crossover with 'Street Fighter 6'

May 22 (UPI) -- Publisher Capcom has announced an upcoming crossover event between its two games, Monster Hunter Wilds and Street Fighter 6. Street Fighter villain Akuma takes on towering monsters using only his fists in the clip released on Thursday. Akuma performs his signature moves including his Raging Demon finisher on Monster Hunter Wilds foes such as Rathian, Ajarakan and Congalala. Monster Hunter Wilds players will be able to acquire a free Akuma layered armor costume for their characters that comes complete with Akuma's moveset on May 28. Players can also obtain a layered armor costume for their Palico based on Street Fighter character Blanka. Players must complete a side mission titled "Ultimate Strength" to get the free costumes. Other items coming to the game include paid cosmetics for Alma that allows her to dress up as Street Fighter characters Chun-Li and Cammy. Capcom has stated that the Street Fighter collaboration will be a permanent part of Monster Hunter Wilds. Monster Hunter Wilds is available on PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X and S. Street Fighter 6 recently had a collaboration with online multiplayer game Overwatch 2. Capcom last released Street Fighter 6 in 2023. New character Elena will be coming to the fighting game on June 5.

Behold, the Monster Hunter Wilds effect: Capcom's old Monster Hunter games sold even better in the past year despite 10 million copies of Wilds eating the fandom's time and money

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Capcom has released its latest financial earnings, and it seems nothing can stop Monster Hunter - not even Monster Hunter. Old entries in the venerable series are selling even better than they did the year before, collectively outstripping the sales of Monster Hunter Wilds itself. Monster Hunter Wilds sold an impressive 10.1 million units at launch, according to Capcom's FY24 earnings report. The financial year covers April 1, 2024 through March 31, 2025, which only encompasses the first month of Wilds' release, making the figure even more impressive. Five of Capcom's top six sellers for the year were Monster Hunter titles, broken up only by Resident Evil 4. Between World, Iceborne, Rise, and Sunbreak, the old MonHun games and expansions sold a collective 10.4 million units, just barely outdoing Wilds itself. It seems clear that anticipation for Wilds drove some of those sales. In FY23, the series sold a collective 9.4 million units, so this year's numbers are showing a pretty substantial bump. "Cumulative sales of the series overall surpassed 100 million units worldwide, helping to enhance the brand value of Monster Hunter," Capcom said in its report. Between Wilds and the rest of the series, Capcom's reporting 20.5 million Monster Hunter titles sold for FY24, and that led to what the publisher calls an "all-time high" of 51.9 million games sold across its entire catalog in the year. Fully 39% of Capcom's video game sales are now Monster Hunter-shaped, and I for one welcome our new Rathalos overlords. Check out our guide to the best Monster Hunter Wilds weapons.
