Kings reportedly finalizing long-term deal to retain interim coach Doug Christie

Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie is about the drop the word "interim" from his title. The Kings are reportedly working on a long-term deal that will officially make Christie their next head coach, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Christie took over as the team's interim head coach after Mike Brown was fired in December. The Kings were 13-18 at the time. Things improved under Christie's guidance. The Kings went 27-24 the rest of the way and showed a much-improved offense with Christie in charge. Sacramento finished 40-42, good for ninth in the Western Conference. The team lost its first game of the play-in tournament to the Dallas Mavericks, ending its season. Following that loss, the team parted ways with general manager Monte McNair. The Kings moved quickly, hiring Scott Perry to take over the role. While Perry could choose the team's next head coach, reports suggested Christie was "well-positioned to keep his job," per The Athletic. Christie — a 15-year NBA veteran — spent five seasons with the Kings. Over his career, Christie averaged 11.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He also played for the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors. Following his playing career, Christie worked for NBC Sports as a color commentator for the Kings before joining the team as an assistant coach in 2021. He remained in that role until December, when the team fired Brown.

Sacramento Kings Part Ways With Monte McNair, Hire Scott Perry

(Photo by Douglas P. DeFelice/Getty Images) After losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA play-in tournament last night, the Sacramento Kings have mutually parted ways with General Manager Monte McNair according to Shams Charania. After five seasons, the Kings have decided to move in another direction in their front office. McNair was the architect behind the Kings playoff drought breaking season in 2023, where they earned a playoff berth for the first time in 16 seasons. McNair's time with the team was highlighted by the most success they had seen since the 2000's. Although Sacramento had a record of 195-205 with McNair at the helm, his time there is still seen as a success. He led Sacramento to consecutive 40 win seasons, another achievement they haven't seen in over a decade. McNair accelerated the timeline of the team when he traded Tyrese Haliburton for Domantas Sabonis, kicking off their path toward the playoffs. After their playoff berth in 2023 the Kings have spiraled back down, missing the postseason in the next two seasons, while also trading star guard De'Aaron Fox in the process. With Sacramento having little wiggle room for improvement at this juncture, McNair and ownership decided to end things amicably. Sacramento has already found their next general manager, finalizing a deal with the heavily experienced Scott Perry. Perry, who was formerly employed with the Knicks will take on the Sacramento Kings job and try to transform them into a respectable team. Perry's time with the New York Knicks did not go well, but he must have done something right in order for Sacramento to hand him the keys at this time.

Reports: Kings, GM Monte McNair part ways after play-in loss

April 17 - The Sacramento Kings and general manager Monte McNair mutually agreed to part ways after Wednesday's play-in loss to the Dallas Mavericks, multiple outlets reported Thursday. McNair just completed his fifth season in the role. He was named the NBA's Executive of the Year after Sacramento ended a league-record 16-year playoff drought in 2022-23. Ninth-seeded Sacramento's season ended with a 120-106 home loss to 10th-seeded Dallas. The Kings finished 40-42 in the regular season. McNair reportedly lost decision-making power in the organization, which fired head coach Mike Brown after 31 games this season and made waves with a series of significant roster moves. Sacramento signed DeMar DeRozan as a free agent in July and at the deadline traded De'Aaron Fox to the Spurs and acquired Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls. The Kings compiled a .488 winning percentage in five seasons under McNair, compared to a .362 clip during the five previous campaigns. McNair worked in the Houston Rockets' front office for 13 years before being hired as the Kings' GM and president of basketball operations in September 2020.

Kings' season ends; Monte McNair out as GM

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – The Sacramento Kings' season is over, and so is Monte McNair's tenure as the team's general manager. On Wednesday night, less than an hour after the Kings lost at home to the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament (120-106), McNair and the Kings 'mutually parted ways' according to multiple reports. Advertisement McNair, who had been the Kings' general manager for five seasons, was responsible for adding DeMar DeRozan as a free agent in the offseason. He was also responsible for firing head coach Mike Brown in December, and for trading away De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs at the deadline. Monte McNair, hired in September of 2020, was the 2022-2023 NBA Executive of the Year after leading the Kings to the playoffs after a 16-year absence.
