Kings' season ends; Monte McNair out as GM
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – The Sacramento Kings' season is over, and so is Monte McNair's tenure as the team's general manager.
On Wednesday night, less than an hour after the Kings lost at home to the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament (120-106), McNair and the Kings 'mutually parted ways' according to multiple reports.

McNair, who had been the Kings' general manager for five seasons, was responsible for adding DeMar DeRozan as a free agent in the offseason. He was also responsible for firing head coach Mike Brown in December, and for trading away De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs at the deadline.
Monte McNair, hired in September of 2020, was the 2022-2023 NBA Executive of the Year after leading the Kings to the playoffs after a 16-year absence.

The Sacramento Kings have had some really good point guards in recent years. One they traded for Domantas Sabonis (Tyrese Haliburton. The other, De'Aaron Fox, was traded for Zach LaVine plus three first-round picks. Now, according to Grant Afseth of RG Media, the Kings are once again 'motivated' to find a new point guard solution. They've even reportedly expressed an interest in landing one of two All-Star guards, Darius Garland or even a big fish, like Trae Young. Advertisement Some might say the Kings should try finding their next point guard in the draft instead of chasing someone like Garland, who's 25 years old. Meanwhile, Young, while he has a tantalizing skillset, is already 26 years old. While Garland has been linked in trade rumors, there is no guarantee that the Hawks will make Young available this offseason. If they did, it would likely take a pretty large trade offer to pry the four-time All-Star away from Atlanta. The Kings don't have a first-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, so it makes some sense that they'd target a proven solution at the point guard position in an attempt to win as many games as possible next season. The Sacramento Kings helped turn the Indiana Pacers into a perennial contender in the Eastern Conference, all stemming from the blockbuster Tyrese Haliburton trade. Now, new information has emerged o why Sacramento traded Haliburton instead of De'Aaron Fox. According to Jon Krawczynski and James Edwards III of The Athletic, the Kings did explore trading Fox in 2022 before moving Haliburton to the Pacers in exchange for Domantas Sabonis. However, negotiations with Indiana quickly made it clear there was zero interest in Fox. The Pacers' front office immediately made it clear that 'the only real avenue' toward a deal would require Haliburton to be the centerpiece of the trade. At the time of the deal, Fox was averaging just 21 points and 5.2 assists per game, shooting 24.8 percent from the perimeter and struggling to live up to his $160 million contract. Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle wanted a point guard who could 'push the pace' and be a high-end facilitator, Fox didn't provide that. Fox earned his first All-Star selection and won Comeback Player of the Year during the 2022-'23 season and Sabonis helped the franchise snap one of the longest playoff droughts in NBA history. It spiraled after that. Fox requested a trade in January, limiting the team's options by making it clear he only wanted to be dealt to the San Antonio Spurs. Sacramento's long-standing infatuation with Zach LaVine led to him being the centerpiece of the deal. With LaVine providing just a minor push over a disgruntled Fox, the Kings made it into the NBA Play-In Tournament and forfeited their top-12 protected first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks. Now, the general manager behind both trades is gone with Fox and Haliburton clearly in better situations for success than they would've had in Sacramento.
