Rescuers locate body of missing American hiker who vanished in the Pyrenees

Spanish search and rescue teams have found the body of an American hiker who went missing in the Pyrenees last month. The body of Cole Henderson, 27, was located on the north face of Monte Perdido, the third-highest peak in the Pyrenees, Spain's Guardia Civil confirmed to CNN in an emailed statement on Tuesday. Authorities said the place where Henderson was found on Friday afternoon was a difficult area to access, with the specialist teams using a crane to airlift his body. On July 9, Henderson told friends he was going to hike into the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park in the province of Huesca. One of his last communications was a text to a friend saying he'd parked up and was putting his phone on airplane mode before starting his trek. He was reported missing and a search began on July 14 after failing to take his flight home to the Netherlands two days prior. Specialist mountain rescue teams and helicopters from the Air Service were deployed to assist in the search, the Guardia Civil previously told CNN. Authorities had been working on the theory that Henderson may have tried to climb Monte Perdido, which stands at 3,355 meters (11,007 feet) high. The route is rated as 'Peu Difficile' (PD), meaning 'somewhat difficult' by the climbing community. While PD routes are often climbed without ropes, they might involve steep sections of climbing, or crevassed glaciers, and frequently require specialized equipment, such as ice axes or crampons. The typical route from the town of Torla, where Henderson's car was located, was still covered in snow in early July, according to footage posted on social media. CNN's Sam Peters and Jack Guy contributed reporting to this story.

Rescuers Find Body of American Hiker Who Was Missing in Pyrenees

Rescuers in Spain found the body of Cole Henderson, an American hiker who had been missing for nearly a month in the Pyrenees, the police in Spain said on Tuesday. Rescuers found Mr. Henderson's body on Friday in an area that is difficult to access, about 200 meters (more than 650 feet) down the north face of Monte Perdido, the Guardia Civil, the Spanish police, said in an emailed statement. Rescue workers airlifted Mr. Henderson's body from the location with the help of a crane. The area where Mr. Henderson, 27, was found, along Spain's northeast border with France, is known for lush meadows, steep canyons and rugged peaks. They include Mount Perdido, the third highest mountain in the Pyrenees, with a summit of 11,000 feet. Mr. Henderson was last heard from on July 9, when he texted friends at around 2 p.m. from near Mount Perdido, according to posts from friends and family on social media. He had parked his car that day at a parking lot in the nearby town of Torla, the police said, where he started his hike. Friends reported Mr. Henderson missing after he failed to return home to the Netherlands on July 12. The Spanish police said a search began two days later, on July 14, in Huesca Province, which includes Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park and other areas of the Pyrenees. Officials had deployed helicopters and members of the Guardia Civil's specialty search and rescue teams, as well as dog units and drones.
