Sesame Street's Pride Month post sparks backlash from Republican lawmakers amid PBS funding threats

Republican lawmakers called to defund PBS after the television station's long-running children's show, "Sesame Street," celebrated LGBTQ "Pride" Month on social media. The children's show went viral after it posted a short message on June 1, kicking off Pride Month. "On our street, everyone is welcome. Together, let's build a world where every person and family feels loved and respected for who they are. Happy #PrideMonth!" Sesame Street's X post read. The post reached over 23 million views and sparked criticism from conservatives, who slammed the kids' show for turning "woke." Npr, Pbs Honchos Face Tense Grilling By Gop Lawmakers Over Biased Coverage, Taxpayer Funding In response, Republican legislators called on PBS, which has been the historical home of Sesame Street for over 50 years, to lose its federal funding. Read On The Fox News App "PBS is shamelessly grooming our children while collecting taxpayer dollars. This is evil and should infuriate every parent in America. DEFUND!!" Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., posted to X. "Federal funds aren't for grooming. Through Sesame Street characters or otherwise. Defund PBS," Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, posted to his personal X account in reply to a video of a 2020 episode of "The Not-Too-Late Show" with Elmo featuring Johnathan Van Ness of Netflix's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." Van Ness is also scheduled to appear as a celebrity guest on Sesame Street this season. Democrats Invoke Children's Shows In Bizarre Defense Of Pbs, Npr: 'Fire Elon, Save Elmo' Miller's office did not immediately return a request for comment asking why she believed "Sesame Street" was "grooming" children with their post. Lee's office told Fox News Digital the senator has been a consistent advocate of pulling taxpayer dollars from PBS for many years. Republicans in Congress have long tried to pull government funding from public media organizations NPR and PBS that they argue are liberally biased. PBS and Sesame Street did not immediately return Fox News Digital's request for comment. In March, Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, reintroduced a bill to defund NPR and PBS, saying they have been "pushing Democrat talking points under the fake banner of 'public media.'" Defunding Pbs And Npr Could Make Them Even Worse President Donald Trump also signed an executive order on May 1 with the goal of eradicating federal funding for NPR and PBS. The order, titled "Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Biased Media," called for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Board to cease direct and indirect funding to the two media outlets. "At the very least, Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. No media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies," the order reads. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) receives about $500 million annually from Congress to distribute to public radio and TV stations, with some of that funding going to support NPR and PBS. Pbs Sues Trump Administration, Says Executive Order Cutting Federal Funding Violates First Amendment PBS and NPR responded to the executive order by filing lawsuits against the Trump administration in May. "[In] an Executive Order issued on May 1, 2025, the President declared that government funding of private sources of non-commercial media is 'corrosive,' and singled out PBS (alongside National Public Radio) as failing to provide 'fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news,'" the court filing obtained by Fox News Digital reads. "PBS disputes those charged assertions in the strongest possible terms. But regardless of any policy disagreements over the role of public television, our Constitution and laws forbid the President from serving as the arbiter of the content of PBS's programming, including by attempting to defund PBS," it continued. Visakhapatnam set to create a new record on International Yoga Day

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed that the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations in Visakhapatnam be conducted in a record-breaking manner. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already announced that he will be participating in the celebrations on June 21 in Visakhapatnam, and the event must be historic and unforgettable,' Mr. Naidu said while reviewing the arrangements for the programme at his camp office on Friday. This year's theme Noting that this year's theme was 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health', Mr. Naidu observed, 'This is a prestigious event. The Prime Minister's presence makes it even more special. It must be conducted spectacularly and should mark the beginning of a widespread yoga movement across the State.' He further said that every citizen should be made a stakeholder. The programme must reach at least two crore people. The State-wide campaign should be launched under the theme, Yogandhra-2025, he said. To prepare the people for the bid event, a 'Yoga Month' would be observed from May 21 to June 21, the Chief Minister said. During this period, yoga practice sessions should be conducted in all the village and ward secretariat jurisdictions. Private individuals, trainers, yoga associations, and experts should be involved as partners, he said. Citizens should be offered both online and offline training for a month. Those who complete the training should be awarded certificate of recognition, he added. Registrations for Yoga Day participation should be facilitated through the village and ward secretariats. Students from schools and colleges should also be actively involved, the Chief Minister said. 'Everyone must consider yoga a fundamental responsibility. Even after the Yoga Day, regular practice must continue across the State. There must be widespread discussions on yoga. To enhance visibility and outreach, organisations such as the Isha Foundation and the Art of Living should be engaged. The International Yoga Day in Andhra Pradesh should rewrite history,' the Chief Minister said. Officials presented plans for the Prime Minister's programme and crowd arrangements at R.K. Beach in Visakhapatnam. They said the participants would spread across from R.K. Beach to Bheemunipatnam Beach. Arrangements were being made for approximately 2.5 lakh people to participate in yoga along this stretch. About 68 locations had been identified for the event, including public spaces such as R.K. Beach, Rushikonda, schools, cricket grounds, police and sports complexes, navy premises, and other open grounds. As it marked 10 years of International Yoga Day, the Chief Minister insisted that the Vizag event be conducted in the 'grandest possible manner.' He suggested that 5 lakh people be involved by organising yoga sessions across all suitable locations along the coastline from R.K. Beach to Srikakulam. Aiming at new record It was at the initiative of Mr. Narendra Modi that the United Nations designated June 21 as International Yoga Day. Yoga would be practised from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on that day. The first such event in 2015, featuring 36,000 participants on a single stage, had entered the Guinness World Records. In the inaugural year, yoga was conducted in 84 countries. Today, more than 170 countries observe International Yoga Day. In 2023, Surat had hosted another record-breaking yoga session with 1,53,000 participants at one location, setting a new Guinness World Record. The Andhra Pradesh government now plans to surpass that record with the Vizag event. It will be conducted in coordination with the Health Department, AYUSH Ministry, and Central Government agencies.

Kelowna mom shares difficult journey of daughter living with rare disease

A Kelowna, B.C., woman is helping spread awareness about a rare disease that has touched her family in a personal way. May marks Tuberous Sclerosis (TS) Awareness Month in Canada, with May 15th being Global Tuberous Sclerosis Day. 'It affects one in 6,000 to one in 10,000,' Cindy Fairs said. TS is characterized by benign tunours in the brain and many other parts of the body. Fairs' daughter Shayla was diagnosed with TS when she was only seven-and-a-half months old. 'She had had a seizure and the doctor didn't initially recognized it as a seizure. Two days later it was a status seizure and we ended up in the hospital and we almost lost her at that point,' Fairs said. Story continues below advertisement 'She ended up going through three hospitals and ended up at B.C. Children's Hospital before she was diagnosed.' That was 1989 and while Shayla is now 36 years old, she is developmentally at the level of a child between three and five years old. 'She doesn't know how to count, she doesn't know her numbers, she doesn't know her letters, she doesn't know my name,' Fairs said. Fairs said brain surgery was considered when Shayla was five years old but it never happened. 'At that time they had never done brain surgery on anyone with tuberous sclerosis in Canada, so we were looking to go to California,' Fairs said. Fairs said the idea was re-visited again when Shayla was 14. 'By then, surgery was happening for individuals with tuberous sclerosis in Canada but there had been so many tumours that had developed in her brain, they could not isolate them so it wasn't an option any longer,' Fairs said. 2:18 Fight for B.C. girl's life-changing medication Fairs said thinking back to when her daughter was diagnosed in her first year old life brings back difficult memories. Story continues below advertisement 'When I think about it, it takes me back to a time of isolation and having very little support and no support,' she said. Fairs added that the only organization she found to lean on was in the United States. 'It was a lifeline,' Fairs said. The kind of lifeline she said was badly needed in Canada, so despite dealing with her daughter's challenges, Fairs got to work and co-founded Tuberous Scelrosis Canada, a non-profit organization now in its 35th year. She's hoping that by raising awareness, it prevents others from feeling the same kind of isolation she did all those years ago. Fairs said that she is only aware of four other families dealing with the disease in the Central Okanagan. Describing Shayla as her everything, Fairs said that four years ago her daughter and her best friend, who is also dealing with health challenges, moved into a place of their own marking an important milestone. 'They have 'round-the-clock care that comes in and supports there two gals and looks after them,' Fairs said. 'She's very happy and it gives her some independence.' Fairs wants to provide hope to others and ensure that people know there are supports in place for those experiencing TS and their loved ones. Story continues below advertisement More information can be accessed on the Tuberous Sclerosis Canada website.
