New banner and event marks VJ Day anniversary in Newtown

A VJ Day remembrance service took place at the war memorial in Newtown on Friday. After the 11am service, Newtown mayor Peter Lewington and deputy Margaret Lewington joined Ann Evans from the Newtown Local History Group in unveiling the WW2 Remembrance Banner at Platform 1 at Newtown Railway Station. The banner was created by a group of volunteers led by Ezma, the director of the Menshed at Platform 1. The completed banner will then be on display in the 80th WW2 Commemoration event on Tuesday, September 2 at the Monty Club. The entertainment will include Newtown Silver Band and the Castle Belles Choir who will sing 1940s songs. Limited tickets are still available from Newtown Monty Club. Newtown contributed to victory over Japan with the first prisoner of war to return from captivity being Cpl Lloyd Hughes in 1945. Mr Hughes was the son of Mr and Mrs Severn Hughes and had been a POW since the fall of Singapore in February 1941 having served in the Far East since 1936. Over the the next four years the Newtown mad endured a living hell and dropped to just six stone in weight but recovered upon his release and eventually returned home.

Newtown company celebrated 30th anniversary with event

A Newtown company has celebrated 30 years in business with a special event. EOM Ltd, which provides electrical, gas, plumbing, and maintenance services, marked its 30th anniversary on July 18 at the Monty Club. The event drew together employees, partners, suppliers, subcontractors, and even some of the original founders. General manager of EOM Ltd, Mike Mills, said: "This milestone represents 30 years of dedication to quality service and building strong relationships with our clients and community." The celebrations included presentations from several guests, such as EOM chairman Dave Knight, Nuair Extraction, Newtown Food Surplus, and Dave Jones from Up Training. There were also team-building activities and a casino-themed evening. One highlight was the reunion of several founding members. The company has grown from its original focus into a comprehensive service provider, offering electrical repairs and installations, solar panel installation, EV charging, plumbing and heating repairs, and property maintenance. EOM Ltd recently became an MCS accredited installer of photovoltaic solar panels, and has focused on LoRaWAN technology, air source heat pumps, EV charging, and other renewable energy solutions. Mr Mills added: "We're proud of our 30-year history, but we're equally excited about our future as we continue to expand our services in renewable energy and smart technology solutions.

WELCOME to bygones as we raise our glass to Newtown's Monty Club. The building was home to the Unicorn Hotel up to 1918 and then became the British Legion while the date 1696 is prominent above the main entrance. A few years ago the declining membership decided on a rebrand and rename to reflect modern times. RECOMMENDED READING Despite its club name it does function as a public house and is used by all ages. Its location right in the centre of town and with a taxi rank outside makes it popular with the older members of the community. A pool room is to be found to the right of the main entrance with a long lounge to the left the bar is some way back in the middle of the building a large function room is to be found to the rear and upstairs there are small rooms which can be used for meeting and further pool and snooker tables. Pictures, paintings and other wall furnishings reflect the club's military associated heritage are prominent throughout. A makeover has improved the interior with fresh paint and new wooden flooring.
