Alex Ovechkin ties Wayne Gretzky's NHL goals record
Alex Ovechkin shoots the puck against the Chicago Blackhawks during the second period at Capital One Arena on Friday. -Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has tied Wayne Gretzky's NHL all-time goals record with his 894th goal after he scored twice Friday in the team's game against the Chicago Blackhawks. With the Hall of Famer in attendance, Ovechkin entered Friday night's contest needing three goals to break the record and two to tie it. Advertisement The 39-year-old wasted no time in getting on the board, getting a behind-the-net feed from Dylan Strome before firing a one-timer from the circle to beat Blackhawks' goalkeeper Spencer Nightoff for his 893rd career goal at 3:53 of the first period. 'Oh yeah, everyone's buzzing right now. Wayne is here, so yeah, it's a special moment,' Ovechkin told Monumental Sports Network on if he felt the atmosphere of the crowd. The goal marked the 40th of the season for Ovechkin, becoming the first player in league history with three 40-goal campaigns at age 35 and over. For most of the game, it seemed as if Ovechkin would have to wait to match Gretzky. A chance in the final minute of the second period appeared like it would draw him level with the historic record but he missed just wide. Advertisement A little more than six minutes into the third period, Ovechkin equaled the historic mark, one-timing the feed from John Carlson to tie the Great One. Play stopped momentarily, with the crowd at Capital One Arena giving the Capitals' star a standing ovation. Following the goal, Ovechkin skated towards his family, greeting them with high fives. He then skated towards center ice and waved at the crowd. He was also shown waving at Gretzky and blowing a kiss his way. Minutes after the record-tying goal, Gretzky commended Ovechkin for joining him in history. 'This is what the game is all about,' Gretzky told the Monumental Sports Network broadcast. 'Alex has been great for the game and great for Washington and great for his own country. It's wonderful, I'm very proud of him. Advertisement 'I'm proud of what I accomplished and that's what makes our game so wonderful. It's the great athletes we have and more importantly, the great people they are.' What Wayne Gretzky said about Alex Ovechkin tying Gretzky's goal record Show Caption Hide Caption Alex Ovechkin ties Wayne Gretzsky for most goals in NHL history Alex Ovechkin reached a career milestone, scoring his 894th goal on Friday night. We recently asked Washington Capitals fans where Ovechkin ranks among the NHL greats. Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goal record Friday night with two scores against the Chicago Blackhawks. "The Great One" was in the building, with festivities planned for if Ovechkin surpassed Gretzky's 894 career goals. Monumental Sports Network spoke with the Hockey Hall of Famer shortly after Ovechkin matched his record with a power-play goal in the third period. "Wayne, you've got some company now," Monumental Sports Network's Al Koken said. ""That's OK," Gretzky said. "That's what my dad told Gordie Howe way back when, right? This is what the game's all about. Alex has been great for the game and great for Washington, great for his own country. "It's wonderful. I'm very proud of him. I'm proud of what I accomplished and, you know what? That's what makes our game so wonderful, is the great athletes we have and more importantly the good people that they are." Gretzky went on to call Ovechkin a "superstar." "He's special," Gretzky said. You can watch Gretzky's full comments below: Gretzky said he hoped goal No. 895 came Friday night — "He deserves to do it in front of their fans," Gretzky said — but the quest for that record-setting strike continues Sunday when the Capitals hit the road to take on the New York Islanders. The Great One is slated to be in attendance until the new record is set. Gretzky has held the NHL goals record since 1994, when he broke Howe's record by potting his 802nd goal. He retired in 1999 after pushing the record to 894. "I don't care what era you play in, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, it's hard to score goals," Gretzky said earlier Friday. "Good for him. Players are better today, the equipment is better, coaching is better. That's the progression in our game, right? That's a positive."

Figure skating event in Washington benefiting victims of the DC plane crash raises $1.2 million
Organizers of a figure skating benefit event in Washington, D.C. said they have already raised $1.2 million for victims of the plane crash over the Potomac River and first responders. Monumental Sports & Entertainment on Monday said the Legacy on Ice tribute show Sunday in the nation's capital drew a sellout crowd of over 15,000 and more money is expected to come in over the next several weeks. After it was broadcast locally on Monumental Sports Network and streamed live on Peacock, NBC is set to air an encore performance on March 30. "We continue to be in awe of and grateful to this community, whose compassion and support was out in full force for the 'Legacy on Ice' event," Monumental chairman Ted Leonsis said in a statement. "Against the backdrop of this massive tragedy, this region has provided a light in showcasing its generosity and empathy for the victims, their families, and the heroic first responders, and I encourage people to continue to donate if they can." The show featured performances from the likes of Johnny Weir, reigning world men's champion Ilia Malinin and back-to-back U.S. women's champion Amber Glenn, as well as poignant tributes to the 67 people who died when an Army helicopter collided with an American Airlines flight and crashed into the Potomac River just outside of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Jan. 29. That included 28 members of the figure skating community. "Being here in this region and knowing everyone on that flight in our community, it was a very traumatic experience for me and really just devastating for me to hear when all that happened," said Malinin, a Northern Virginia native who knew several of the skaters who were on the flight and was responsible for the idea that led to the event. "I really wanted to have something that everyone could remember as a family, as a whole community that we remember them and they will be forever remembered." The poignant, two-plus-hour event was full of raw emotion, like 13-year-old Isabella Aparicio skating in memory of her brother, Franco, and father, Luciano, who were on the flight and weeping on her knees at the conclusion of her appearance. Maxim Naumov, who lost his parents in the crash, performed in their honor and wiped away tears as he left the ice, holding up an electric candle as applause rained down. "It really put me to tears and it put a lot of us to tears," Malinin said. "I was really just proud of him for being able to kind of wrap his mind around this and really just get on that ice and perform with everything he's got." The event was put together a week after the crash, and the star-studded cast of some of U.S. figure skating's best of the past and present included Olympic champions Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi and Nathan Chen. Monumental said nearly 500 first responders and approximately 150 family members of victims were in attendance. The money raised is set to be split among the 67 families affected, first responders and U.S. Figure Skating. "We want to raise a lot of money and make sure that a third goes to the skaters community, a third goes to the first responders and a third goes to the families," Leonsis told The Associated Press on Sunday. "People care. The lesson in this is that, to me, if you personalize something like this, you can come together and do the right things in the right way. I'm proud of what we've done."
