Scherzer, Springer lead Blue Jays to 7-3 win over Pirates
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Max Scherzer pitched six strong innings to notch his 220th career win, and George Springer hit an early two-run home run as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on Tuesday night. Scherzer (4-2) allowed one run and four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The 18-year veteran has pitched at least six innings in five consecutive starts. The Blue Jays (74-53) built a 5-0 lead against Mitch Keller in the first two innings. Springer hit a 423-foot shot to center field for his 20th homer of the season in the second inning. The Blue Jays scored three runs in the first when Alejandro Kirk had an RBI single and Nathan Lukes followed with a two-run single. Kirk added a two-run home run, his 10th, off Colin Holderman in the seventh inning to make 7-1. The All-Star catcher finished with three hits and three RBIs. Keller (5-12) was tagged for five runs in 3 1/3 innings after giving up six runs in four innings in a loss at National League-leading Milwaukee in his previous start last Wednesday. Key stat The Blue Jays are 25-13 in interleague games, tops in the major leagues. Key moment The Pirates loaded the bases with none out in the second inning against Scherzer but managed only one run on a groundout by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Up next The rubber game of the three-game series is set for Wednesday with Chris Bassitt (11-6, 4.22 ERA) pitching for the Blue Jays. Johan Oviedo (0-0, 18.00) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to start for the Pirates. ___

Tigers' Gleyber Torres set to reach huge milestone tonight vs. Houston originally appeared on The Sporting News When Gleyber Torres takes the field tonight, he will join exclusive company. The Detroit Tigers' second baseman will become the 75th active player to reach 1,000 career games, per Chris McCosky of Detroit News. Perhaps more impressive, he will be one of only 11 primary second basemen in MLB history with 150 career home runs by his 1,000th game. And Torres, who made his Major League debut in 2018, is just 28 years old. Torres' journey to 1,000 games The Venezuela native began his climb to the majors in 2013, when he signed as an international free agent with the Chicago Cubs. Five years later, he made his Major League debut during the 2018 season with the New York Yankees and recorded a .271 batting average with 24 home runs and 77 RBI over 123 games. That was a good enough rookie year for Torres to be named an All-Star—a feat he also achieved the following season in 2019, when he upped his average to .278 and set career highs in both homers (38) and RBI (90). After seven years with the Yankees, Torres elected free agency and signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers before this season. That proved to be the right choice, as he started his first All-Star game this summer and has helped lead the Tigers to the top of the AL Central with a 73-53 record. Torres has a slash line of .261/.357/.401 this season with 13 homers and 58 RBI through 111 games. The Tigers will certainly need that type of production as they begin a three-game series vs. the Houston Astros—who lead the AL West—at Comerica Park tonight. The two teams haven't faced each other since late April, when the Astros took two out of three games in Houston.

David Peterson dominates the Nationals and Mark Vientos homers again as the Mets win 8-1
WASHINGTON (AP) — David Peterson dominated the Nationals again, Mark Vientos homered for the second consecutive game and the New York Mets pounded Washington 8-1 on Tuesday night for their third straight victory. Peterson (8-5), who blanked the Nats on June 11 in New York for his first career shutout, extended his scoreless streak against Washington to 25 innings dating to last season. He finally allowed a run when Dylan Crews led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a double-play grounder. The only Mets starter who has reliably pitched deep into games, Peterson finished the eighth. He allowed four hits, struck out 10 and walked one. Juan Soto hit his 31st homer, Jeff McNeil homered and drove in three runs, and Brett Baty also went deep for the Mets, who may be breaking out of a funk that began in late July. New York had lost 14 of 16 before this run of three wins in three states that began Saturday at Citi Field and continued Sunday night at the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Vientos hit a three-run homer. 'We need him now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said before the game of Vientos, who hit 27 homers in 111 games last year but has seen sporadic playing time lately. Tuesday's two-run shot off Jake Irvin (8-8) was his ninth longball of the season. McNeil hit a two-run double during the Mets' five-run third against Irvin and went deep in the ninth off Jackson Rutledge. Peterson faced the minimum through five innings and had his first stress in the sixth, allowing a leadoff double to Andrés Chaparro and a one-out single to Jacob Young. The All-Star lefty then struck out James Wood and retired CJ Abrams on a fly to center. Key stat Peterson worked six or more innings for the 16th time. Clay Holmes (seven) has the next-most such outings on the Mets. Up next Kodai Senga (7-4, 2.35 ERA) starts for the Mets against the Nationals' Brad Lord (3-6, 3.26) on Wednesday night. ___
