RC Cola – MoonPie Festival celebrates 30 years in Bell Buckle

BELL BUCKLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The tiny town of Bell Buckle is celebrating a milestone for its favorite sweet-and-soda treat. The annual RC Cola – MoonPie Festival is celebrating 30 years in Bell Buckle on Saturday, June 21. Each summer the town of about 400 residents explodes as people from around the country come to celebrate the iconic snack duo of a MoonPie with a cold RC Cola. Neighborhood News: Stories impacting your community | Read More The festival kicks off with a 5K and 10-mile race. The 10-mile is a certified run for aspiring competitive runners, according to festival officials. The races kick off a 7 a.m. and when they're complete, the annual parade starts making its way through the streets of Bell Buckle. 'The parade is definitely small-town, fun, kitschy—you never know what's going to happen or who's going to show up to that,' Heather Williams, President of the Bell Buckle Chamber of Commerce said. 'We always have a lot of fun with the parade.' After the parade concludes, there is plenty more RC Cola and MoonPie fun to be had – there are games and contests and plenty of family-friendly activities to participate in, all with plenty of sodas and MoonPies to go around. One of the competitions is the MoonPie toss. The game is exactly how it sounds, according to Williams: contestants see who can throw a MoonPie the farthest. Per Williams, competitors take the competition seriously, with plenty of in-good-fun spirit. News 2 On Tour | Explore the communities that shape Middle Tennessee Because this year also celebrates the 30th year of the festival, Williams said there will also be a special new game in line with the theme. In addition to all the festivities, attendees will also be able to snag a piece of the World's Largest MoonPie, which is made every year specifically for the festival by the MoonPie bakery. 'Chattanooga Bakery literally shuts down production momentarily for us so that they can make the largest MoonPie that will fit through their tunnel. Once that goes out the tunnel and dressed, it's about 38 inches,' Williams said. And while there are larger MoonPies that are assembled, this one is the only in-tact MoonPie created by the original baker of the MoonPie. 'It is fantastic. It's the best MoonPie you will ever eat,' Williams said. Each year, the largest MoonPie baked has a different flavor in line with the festival's overall celebration theme. Last year's theme was all about Elvis, so the MoonPie was peanut butter and banana flavored. This year's specialty flavor is being kept under wraps until the day of the festival, so those who want a piece of the pie will need to head down to Bell Buckle to check it out in person. Masters rookie McCarty goes from cut line to contention

AUGUSTA, Georgia, April 11 (Reuters) - Masters debutant Matt McCarty was prepared to spend the weekend at Augusta National watching the conclusion of the Masters but will have a much better view after moving off the cutline and into contention on Friday. McCarty, in only his second major championship start, began the second round at one under par but was quickly in danger of missing the halfway cut after following an opening double-bogey with a bogey. At that point the 27-year-old American, who had no plans to compete anywhere next week, could not help but let thoughts of missing the cut creep into his mind and perhaps spending the weekend outside the ropes and watching as a patron. "I was going to take next week off anyway. I probably would have hung out for a couple days, but it's way better to do it this way than just walking around," McCarty said after signing for a four-under-par that left him at five under on the week. "I'm glad I don't have to find out." McCarty kick-started his round with a birdie at the par-three sixth where his tee shot from an elevated tee settled eight feet from a tricky pin position at the front edge of a green that is guarded by a bunker. That launched a sizzling run of four consecutive birdies for McCarty, who added four more birdies on his inward nine before closing his with a bogey after missing a five footer for par. "I don't know, just kind of stuck with the game plan. I didn't let myself get too rattled I feel like," said McCarty. "Just stayed focused and didn't think about what happened earlier and kind of moved on, and it was good." To prepare for the year's first major, McCarty spent four days on site earlier this year and played a "mock tournament" with himself on a course he already felt familiar with. McCarty said he attended a Masters as a young child with his father and in addition to remembering having MoonPies and sweet tea, gained a familiarity with the famed layout. "Not as well as most of these guys in the field I feel like, but as well as I've probably known any course this year just from growing up watching it on TV so much, honestly," said McCarty. "You kind of -- there's obviously some new changes every year, but I've been watching this tournament on TV since I was five years old, I think."

Krewe of Highland Parade & Bal: what you need to know

They're swapping out traditional beads for eco-friendly fun—expect more stuffed toys, Moon Pies, and even cash flying through the air. 'Our crew, our float. We throw money. Because it's cheaper, it's hilarious. It's cheaper to throw in 50-cent pieces and dollars than it is actually to throw in quality beads. The cheap beads nobody wants. They're actually called trash beads. We ask people not to throw beads. Even if they can throw moon pies or something fun like that.' says the Krewe of Highlands founder, Matthew Linn, Lin says there's a Krewe that throws exclusively VCR recyclables and others that throw food, such as spam and hot dogs. Gardner, shares that he became king through two of his friends, the previous King and Queen of Highland, both from a sub-Krewe titled 'the Krewe of Epicurious.' 'And I love what we do for the community. We get back in, and we also have a bunch of philanthropies that we'd like to support, you know, as far as planting trees, you know, give back to the community to various foundations. So in that part, it's one of the things I love about being the king,' Gardner said. Gardner says his favorite element is how community-driven.
