Roundup: Dad arrested after child allegedly found with ammo at school, more news
Sheriff's deputies arrested a Moorpark man May 27 on suspicion of weapon and child endangerment charges after his child came to school with a round of ammunition and they found unsecured firearms at their home. Deputies reportedly made the discovery after responding to Campus Canyon College Preparatory Academy regarding the student's possession of the single round of ammunition. The child allegedly brought the ammunition to the Moorpark school to show friends. Sheriff's Deputy K'Lynn Jackson said the child was in the fifth grade or less. She declined to state the child's age or gender. No other minors were living in the home, she said. Officers located two unregistered assault rifles, a handgun, ammunition and several high-capacity magazines, according to a news release issued by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. Jackson said the items were not locked up but declined to say where they were kept. The father was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, criminal firearm storage, unlawful transfer of a firearm, two counts of possession of an assault weapon and eight counts of possession of a high-capacity magazine. Jackson said the suspect was booked into jail. He had been released on bail as of the night of May 27, but is due in court June 10, according to the Ventura County jail inmate log. Moorpark school driver suspected of DUI, IDs given in 2 fatal motorcycle crashes, more
A Moorpark Unified School District driver was arrested May 28 on suspicion of DUI after a parent reported the smell of alcohol on him. The parent called the school district around 8:50 a.m., and school officials, in turn, called law enforcement, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. School officials said in a letter to parents that the district's transportation dispatch workers told the driver to pull over and sent a backup van and driver. The five students in the van were moved into the arriving van and taken to their destination, according to the district. "Parents of the students in the van were contacted shortly after police concluded their investigation at the scene," Superintendent Kelli Hays said in her letter. Sheriff's deputies arrived and arrested the 39-year-old Moorpark man. He was later booked into Ventura County jail but has since been released on bail, jail records show. He is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court July 29, according to jail records. Authorities identified two men who died in separate motorcycle crashes in East Ventura County just days apart from each other. Matthew K. Estrada Jr., 27, was from Thousand Oaks, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office. He was riding his motorcycle in Thousand Oaks near the intersection of Erbes Road and Tubbs Street around 10:20 p.m. on May 25 when he drove off the roadway and crashed into a light pole, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office previously reported. He was transported to Los Robles Regional Medical Center where he later died to blunt force head injuries he sustained in the crash, officials said. Jacob D. Ruiz, 25, was from Simi Valley, the medical examiner's office said. He was riding his motorcycle near the 2000 block of Royal Avenue in Simi Valley on May 23 around 3:20 p.m. when he lost control of his bike due to speed and crashed, the Simi Valley Police Department said previously. Medical personnel performed life-saving measures at the scene. He was transported to Los Robles where he succumbed to multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the crash, authorities said. The wrestling community at Royal High School in Simi Valley mourned Ruiz's death on the social media site Instagram. "Dear friends, our wrestling family has suffered a horrible loss," the post says. "Jacob Ruiz, brother of Coach (Edward) Ruiz, was in a motorcycle accident and did not survive." A Simi Valley man was charged May 27 for allegedly selling a gun to a minor who later used the weapon to commit suicide, authorities said. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office charged the 18-year-old with three felonies, including unlawful transfer of a firearm, child endangerment and transfer of a firearm to a minor, according to Ventura County Superior Court records. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. The charges came after a Ventura County Sheriff's Office investigation into the suicide of a minor in Thousand Oaks in January alleged that the Simi Valley man had sold the weapon to the minor, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies arrived to a report of a suicidal subject and found the juvenile suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was transported to Los Robles Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, sheriff's officials said. The agency investigated the death and found evidence tying the Simi Valley man to the firearm sold to the minor, authorities said. He was arrested May 23 in Thousand Oaks, but has since been released on his own recognizance. The man is scheduled to return to Ventura County Superior Court June 3, jail records show. Hero girl's moving podium act after transgender athlete hammered her into second place
A teenage girl made sure she still got her moment to shine after a transgender athlete pushed her into second place at a track meet in California. Reese Hogan of Crean Lutheran High School competed in the CIF Southern Section Finals on Saturday, setting a new PR and record for her school. After the meet, Hogan stood beside competitors from other schools, including AB Hernandez of Jurupa Valley - a male-born transgender athlete competing in girls track and field. After they all posed for a picture - with Hernandez standing on the top, first place podium - Hogan 'assumed her rightful spot,' Riley Gaines, a political activist who fights against trans women in female sports, said. 'When the boy got off the podium, she assumed her rightful spot as champion,' Gaines wrote on X alongside a short clip of Hogan beaming as she stood at first place. 'The crowd erupts with applause. THIS is the way. Congrats to Reese Hogan, the REAL champ!!!' Gaines also said Hernandez, who was seen holding up the number one and a medal, is a 'fraud.' Hernandez won against Hogan in the triple jump by just over four feet. The trans athlete also won the long jump title and finished in seventh place for the high jump during the event, Sports Illustrated reported. Hogan 'assumed her rightful spot,' Riley Gaines, a political activist who fights against trans women in female sports, said Hernandez now qualifies for the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet held on May 24 back at Moorpark High. Hernandez currently holds the top marks in long jump in the state, along with triple jump. Just weeks before this moment, Hernandez sparked backlash after winning the triple jump by an astonishing distance. According to official records, won the jump by nearly three feet, while the margin of victory in the long jump came in at a distance of nearly two feet. A week prior, Hernandez won the triple jump at Ontario Relays by eight feet over the runner-up. Hernandez's participation have sparked anger on social media as Jennifer Sey, founder of the organization XX-XY - which vows 'to protect women's sports and spaces' - shared video of the athlete on X and wrote: 'This guy won the girls long jump and triple jump in a CA track meet over the weekend. He won the triple jump by 8ft. He's really crushing it!' Colin Rugg, the co-owner of Trending Politics, also shared footage of Hernandez competing to his 1.7million followers and said: 'Transgender high school track star demolishes the female competition by *8 feet* in the triple jump at a track meet in California. Transgender high school track star demolishes the female competition by *8 feet* in the triple jump at a track meet in California. Wow, what an accomplishment. I'm sure it had nothing to do with being a biological male. AB Hernandez says they plan to win 1st place in the state of California for the triple jump.' According to Newsweek, Hernandez also finished third last year in the triple jump behind two seniors at the 2024 track state championship meet. Hernandez has been outspoken about transgender women participating in female sports. In a recent interview with Capital & Main, Hernandez said: 'There's nothing I can do about people's actions, just focus on my own. 'I'm still a child, you're an adult, and for you to act like a child shows how you are as a person.' In reference to placing first, Hernandez said: 'All I thought was, "I don't think you understand that this puts your idiotic claims to trash. She can't be beat because she's biologically male." Now you have no proof that I can't be beat.' The latest moment involving transgender women in female sports comes as President Donald Trump's bill to ban that from happening fell into the senate earlier this month. Legislation that aimed to bar transgender women and girls nationwide from participating in school athletic competitions designated for female athletes failed to advance in a divided Senate as Democrats stood united against an issue that Republicans leveraged in last year's elections. A test vote on the bill failed to gain the 60 votes needed to advance in the chamber as senators stuck to party lines in a 51-45 vote tally. The bill sought to determine Title IX protections 'based solely on a person´s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.'

Benjamin Harris and Servite showcase their speed at Southern Section track championships
In comic book terms, Servite's group of talented sprinters would be described as "faster than a speeding bullet." There's so many of them that a rival coach quipped, "They run so fast no one can see them." Advertisement Under an overcast sky and with unusually cool temperatures for May, Saturday's Southern Section track and field championships at Moorpark High was not conducive of record times, but that didn't prevent the Friars from turning on the speed. It started with winning the Division 3 4x100-meter relay in 40.43 seconds but really got going when sophomore Benjamin Harris ran a career-best time of 10.32 seconds to win the 100 meters, an event in which the Friars accumulated 20 points. "I feel I have more in the tank," Harris said. "It's not my favorite weather. I like running in heat, but you have to adapt." Later in the 200 meters, he won in 20.96 seconds and Servite athletes also claimed third, fourth, fifth and sixth. Freshman Jalen Hunter won the 400 in 47.10. Advertisement Brandon Thomas, Servite's coach, has used his many fast runners to push each other in practices. "The next three weeks we're going to be real hot," he said. Servite could be a state title contender, but despite its sprinter success, the Friars fell short to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame for the Division 3 team title. The Knights found enough depth in the field events to finish with 106.5 points to Servite's 104. JJ Harel made major contributions with a win in the high jump, second place in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Aaron Uzan got a surprise win in the 110-meter hurdles.
