Man charged in deadly shooting of Lancaster County business owner
A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a business owner in Lancaster County Wednesday evening. Just before 6 p.m., deputies responded to a home on Memorial Park Road, which was owned by relatives of Roger Ledell Baskins. Weeks prior to this incident, Baskins got into an argument with his family members. During that argument, Baskins pulled out a pistol and threatened one family member before firing several shots into another family member's car in the yard. According to deputies, Baskins then used a car battery to smash windows out of the car he shot, as well as another car that belonged to a third family member. However, no one was injured during this incident. Baskins left the scene on foot and was eventually spotted by family members in a yard on Willow Lake Road. He was then taken into custody. An inquiry into the vehicle revealed it belonged to a 65-year-old Charles Wilburn Presler from Rock Hill. At the request of local officers, Rock Hill Police Department went to the Presler address and spoke with his wife. She said she hadn't been able to get in contact with him via phone. She also said Presler operated a business on Memorial Park Road, which was a short distance from the home where the family disturbance occurred. Deputies then searched that business and found Presler deceased from a gunshot wound. He also appeared to have been robbed. When Baskins was arrested, deputies said they found a pistol in the 4Runner. An initial investigation indicates Baskins arrived at Presler's business a little over an hour after the domestic disturbance. 'We might never know what set Baskins off, but for about an hour and a half he was on a violent rampage in our community,' said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the murder victim's family and friends. I'm thankful Baskins' family members alerted police to his location, and I appreciate the quick action taken by the Lancaster Police Department officers who chased Baskins down and took him into custody. Our community was not safe as long as Baskins was on the run.' In connection with the homicide, Baskins has been charged with murder, armed robbery, secon- degree burglary, grand larceny of more than $2,000 but less than $10,000, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of certain crimes. No bond for man accused of robbing two people, including Morehead Social owner
A man is in custody and is being held on no bond after CMPD says he robbed two people and shot one of them outside the Kangaroo gas station last week. It happened last Thursday on Wilkinson Boulevard. The man identified as the victim in the police report and affidavit is the registered owner of Morehead Social, according to the NC Secretary of State's Office. Morehead Social burned down last month. The fire is under investigation. The affidavit says the two were purchasing snacks and walking back to the Golden Dragon Arcade around 5:30 in the morning. Police say Ashford demanded the Morehead Social owner's bag, which contained $10,000 in cash. The affidavit says Ashford then threatened to shoot them. After the threat, the affidavit says the Morehead Social owner pulled his own handgun out. The two fired at each other. Police say Ashford shot the woman in the thighs. Police also say the Morehead Social owner shot Ashford in the foot. As CMPD was investigating the shooting scene, someone called 911 to report a puddle of blood and a blood trail leading to an apartment in Stonehaven East. That's where police found and arrested Ashford. Ashford has a lengthy criminal history. In 2018, he was sentenced to 93 months in prison after pleading guilty to robbery with a dangerous weapon. CMPD believes he worked with 'an unknown female who was watching the victims in order to set them up for the robbery.' CMPD did not respond to an email seeking further comment. Attempts to get in touch with the shooting victim and the Morehead Social owner were unsuccessful. South Charlotte bar that burned down received multiple fire code violations
Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at a bar in south Charlotte for two and a half hours on Saturday morning. Smoke was visible across the Charlotte skyline as the Morehead Social went up in flames. Chopper 9 Skyzoon flew over what is left of the building on Monday and captured the nearly demolished building with the roof collapsed. Channel 9′s Gina Esposito asked investigators about the cause of the fire. Fire investigators said the fire started in the basement, but the damage was so bad it was hard to tell. Andrew Rogers told Esposito he saw firefighters battling the fire. 'There was a lot of water they had to use,' he said. 'They had maybe four to five ladder trucks.' Ella Hudson said the smoke was heavy as she drove by on the interstate. 'It took three minutes down 77 to breathe because you could feel the smoke in your car still,' she said. Esposito asked local agencies for fire inspection records and found that the Charlotte Fire Department had issued a number of violations to the bar last year. Additionally, officials said the bar's fire suppression system test certificate and Charlotte fire permit were not posted. 'Charlotte Fire has made multiple follow-ups with the business on September 13, October 16, and November 25, 2024, to determine if these violations have been addressed. However, we have not received any response from the business,' CFD told Esposito in an email. Esposito called, messaged, and emailed the bar's owner for comment and has yet to hear back. But the owner did post on social media saying they are grateful nobody was hurt, and for the fire department's response. WATCH: Firefighters battle three alarm fire in South End
