Family of man killed at Detroit Lions tailgate sues Eastern Market, security company
The family of a man killed at a Detroit Lions tailgate at Eastern Market in September 2024 has filed a lawsuit against the venue and two other companies, claiming negligence by the three parties. The lawsuit was filed July 31 in Wayne County Circuit Court on behalf of the estate of Rayshawn Palmer, age 40, of Detroit, one of the two who died in a shooting that took place Sept. 15, 2024, during a tailgate party at Eastern Market. The defending parties are Eastern Market Corporation, Shield Security Consultants and Protection Services, and Bullseye Event Group. The tailgate gathering was at the Eastern Market venue and hosted by Bullseye Events. Shield Security was a third-party security company hired to work at the event. The lawsuit seeks at least $25,000 in damages for medical, funeral and burial expenses related to Palmer's fatal injuries. "The shooting was a foreseeable act in light of the history of similar activity on or near the premises and the absence of reasonable preventative measures by Defendants," the lawsuit claims. The lawsuit was filed by Orlando-based personal injury law firm Morgan & Morgan on behalf of Palmer's family. The law firm said in a statement that Palmer was not involved in the conflict but instead "tried to de-escalate the situation." "Rayshawn Palmer's six children will now go through life without their father because of an act of violence that we believe was preventable. Our lawsuit alleges that, despite a history of fights and violent incidents at Eastern Market, the defendants moved forward with inadequate security that allowed violence to escalate into a shooting that killed a beloved father, son, brother and uncle. Mr. Palmer's family has been absolutely devastated and will never be made whole again, but they are seeking justice and accountability in hopes that no one else has to endure the type of loss that they have," read the statement attributed to Morgan and Morgan founder John Morgan and attorney David Stechow. Eastern Market has declined to comment on the lawsuit. Detroit police said a large fight broke out in Shed 6 and was briefly dispersed that day. But when two people started to act as if they would resume the fight, one of them pulled out a gun and fired it at least twice. Two guns were recovered from the area. Police officers who were in the area to direct traffic after the Detroit Lions game rushed to the scene and took one man into custody immediately. The victims were later identified as Palmer and 25-year-old Jalen Welch. One shot was fired, the bullet first struck Welch and then traveled through his body, striking Palmer. After an investigation, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced that no charges will be filed against the 40-year-old man, saying the shooter acted in self-defense. His name was not released by authorities. "It is absolutely tragic that during all the fun and merrymaking at a Lions tailgate that two lives were lost," Worthy said at the time. "The first was Mr. Welch, who was the one who first pulled out a gun and was shot by the 40-year-old, a lawful CPL holder, who was defending himself. A single shot was fired." Eastern Market canceled its Sept. 30, 2024, tailgate party in response to the incident. The market's tailgate party event series has since resumed in conjunction with selected events, with new policies that include no weapons on site, shorter time limits and assigned spots. The above video originally aired Sept. 15, 2024.

Jury awards $1.17 million after woman was injured in Phenix City Piggly Wiggly
A jury in Russell County, Alabama, awarded $1.17 million to the estate of a woman whose lawyers say was thrown to the ground during a March 2018 robbery of a Phenix City Piggly Wiggly, according to court documents provided by Morgan & Morgan. The jury made their decision in the lawsuit Wednesday. The lawsuit was filed against J.T.M. Corporation, owner and/or operator of Piggly Wiggly Store #425, which is located at 1130 Highway 280 bypass in Phenix City. An initial complaint filed on Battle's behalf by Walker Garrett, who is a Columbus councilor and an attorney for Morgan & Morgan, alleges Battle was in the checkout line of the Piggly Wiggly on March 3, 2018, when the store manager confronted someone attempting to rob the store. The lawsuit alleged the person attempting the robbery grabbed Battle and threw her to the ground. The lawsuit says Battle, who was alive at the time the suit was filed but has since died, suffered 'severe injuries.' She was permanently harmed and suffered 'mental anguish' due to the incident. 'While we did not claim that her death was related, Ms. Battle's health was in much better shape before the incident and she suffered from a steady decline in health following the incident,' Garrett said in a statement. 'She was 85 at the time of the incident, and passed away 4 years later in 2022.' The store did not have private security or hired police officers attending to security at the store on March 3, 2018, the lawsuit says. The complaint alleges this robbery wasn't the first time a robbery or attempted crime had occurred at the store. The complaint says the defendants 'knew, or had reason to know, of a probability of conduct by a third person that would endanger Muriel Battle and other patrons.' 'We're pleased the jury saw how this injury severely diminished the quality of our client's life in her final years and recognized the defendant's role in causing her injuries,' said Morgan & Morgan attorney Erby Fischer in a statement. Attorney John Morgan continues push for new political party, eyes 2026 governor's race
The Brief Orlando attorney John Morgan is moving forward with forming a centrist political party in Florida. He says the move could support a potential 2026 gubernatorial run amid rising voter frustration with partisan extremes. Morgan believes the state needs a political "vehicle" for compromise. ORLANDO, Fla. - Prominent Orlando attorney John Morgan is advancing efforts to form a new political party, positioning it as a centrist alternative to what he calls the extremes of the Republican and Democratic parties. What we know Orlando attorney John Morgan is moving forward with plans to form a new political party in Florida, aimed at offering a centrist alternative to the current two-party system. Known for founding the Morgan & Morgan law firm, Morgan has previously hinted at a gubernatorial run and is now laying the groundwork for a possible campaign in 2026 through this new political vehicle. What we don't know Morgan has not formally announced his candidacy for governor, nor has he provided details about the structure, name, or leadership of the proposed political party. It remains unclear whether the party will field additional candidates or focus solely on supporting his potential campaign. The backstory Morgan has been a well-known figure in Florida's political and legal circles for years, occasionally signaling interest in public office. His frustration with partisan politics has been a recurring theme, but this marks his most concrete step toward political organization. The move comes amid increasing polarization and dissatisfaction among voters not aligned with either major party. Big picture view Florida's political landscape is sharply divided, with Republicans holding 40% of registered voters and Democrats at 31%. However, the rise of voters with no party affiliation — now at 26% — points to an opportunity for a new political movement. Morgan's initiative appears to be tapping into that demographic, which could reshape the state's political dynamics if successful. What they're saying "I don't believe there's any compromise in our political system anymore — anywhere, on both sides," Morgan said. "You have to make a sacrifice for the common good. I don't care if it's me, but I think we need a vehicle to make it possible."
