Colfax woman, three children seriously injured in crash on U.S. 52

A Colfax woman remains hospitalized in critical condition, while her three children were listed as stable, Boone County Sheriff's Detective Morganne Carpenter said Tuesday morning. Authorities have not yet released the victims' names. The woman was driving a blue Subaru Legacy sedan that hit the back of a sanitation truck working at 6856 N. U.S. 52, north of Thorntown, on Monday afternoon, according to Boone County Communications Center records. Police did not immediately know why the car hit the truck. First responders said the children had been restrained in a car seat, a booster seat, and a seat belt. They and their mother were taken to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after other motorists helped the children out of the vehicle, the Boone County Sheriff's Office said in a news statement. Their mother was found unconscious in the car. Authorities closed all four lanes of U.S. 52 for a time while a medical helicopter landed to collect one of the children. Barry Gillan was driving the Smith Trash Service Truck while Dustin Talley was outside collecting trash from a home, Carpenter said. Both men were treated for minor injuries, and Gillan voluntarily gave a blood sample, as is required of drivers after serious accidents. But Carpenter said he was not suspected of wrongdoing. The Boone County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team is investigating. More details will be published as they become available.
