Darnell Washington's size sparks bold fan theory as Steelers consider offensive line options
Darnell Washington's size sparks bold fan theory as Steelers consider offensive line options (Image via Getty) Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington is gaining attention again; this time, not just for his performance but for a possible position change. The idea came up during the August 7 episode of Pittsburgh Steelers Morning Rush, where host Alan Saunders explored whether Darnell Washington could eventually shift from tight end to offensive tackle. It's not just a podcast hot take, fans and analysts have been watching his training camp practices and questioning if his incredible size and blocking power could help fill a bigger role on the offensive line. Pittsburgh Steelers training camp highlights Darnell Washington's tackle potential after dominant performance Darnell Washington impressed training camp with his blocking ability and physicality. At 6-foot-7 and close to 270 pounds, he stands physically as an NFL offensive lineman would. When he exhibits his natural strength and technique through the blocking drills, it's easy to see why people wonder if he could help a struggling offensive line. Social media lit up with Pittsburgh Steelers fans with videos of him moving defenders and the conversation took off. Others even wondered if he could be a better tackle than second year player Broderick Jones, who has struggled this preseason. Alan Saunders acknowledged those comments and said while it's still just talk, it's not unrealistic. Darnell Washington was asked about the possibility himself and responded positively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like become a millionaire wealthci Shop Now Undo He said he believes he has the skills to play offensive tackle but is focused on being a tight end unless the team asks for something else. He's in a potent tight end group with Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith, and head coach Mike Tomlin appears to be enthused about employing all three of them to different degrees of effectiveness this season. Darnell Washington's combination of size, strength, and catching gives him tremendous value in any offensive scheme. For the time being, he appears to be staying at tight end, but his versatility can offer options if injuries or change to the starting lineup occur later in the year. One thing is certain that Darnell Washington won't be hard to miss. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Is Defense Dominating in Camp a Problem?
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how to evaluate results from training camp. The Steelers are facing themselves every single day, so every time there's a good play by one player, unit or side of the ball, that means the opposite entity has given up a big play. It can make it tough to evaluate what's really happening at times. Alan breaks it down. #steelers #herewego #nfl CONNECT WITH STEELERS NOW: Steelers Now: SN on Twitter: SN on FB: SN on Insta:

Steelers LT Broderick Jones Leaves Practice with Injury
UNITY TWP, Pa. – Pittsburgh Steelers left tackle Broderick Jones suffered an injury during Sunday's practice and did not return. He was getting his right hip area taped up by trainers after individual drills. Jones participated in seven shots, but Dylan Cook took over at left tackle for the second team period. Shortly after, Jones was spotted with his jersey off. Rookie tight end/fullback DJ Thomas-Jones was also getting some attention for what looks to be a left ankle/calf injury. Thomas-Jones left the field in the front seat of the cart. He looked to be in some significant pain. Jones will be protecting the blind side of 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2025. He'll have to be on his 'A' game, as the offense will run through Rodgers. If Rodgers gets injured, the Steelers' entire plans in 2025 will blow up in smoke. Jones is well-aware of his responsibility this season. 'I just got to keep him upright all season,' Jones said. After starting at right tackle the last two seasons, Jones is now at left tackle. The change is not a big adjustment for him. 'No, I don't think it's different,' Jones said. 'I've been in the starting lineup. It's still the same position to me. I'm trying to become a starter. They're looking at me to be left tackle, so I just got to focus on that.' Not only has Jones gotten back into the swing of things at left tackle, but he took a different conditioning approach this offseason. He told reporters during OTAs that last season he played between 325 and 330 pounds. He's around 305-310. 'That's always tough, just because getting back into football shape — it's hard,' Jones said. 'Going from offseason back into camp, here in Latrobe with this heat, it's hard to predict. I feel like I'm in pretty good shape. But you never know until the real deal comes, which is Tuesday, when the pads come on.' Outside of Jones and Thomas-Jones, the Steelers suffered their first significant injury of training camp on Saturday, when outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon left practice on a cart. Moon was injured during the seven shots period, the first of the team portion of every practice, when he went down while he was rushing the passer. He was taken from the field at St. Vincent College on a cart. After practice, head coach Mike Tomlin said that he is being evaluated for a calf injury. Alan Saunders and Brendan Howe provided reporting from St. Vincent College.
