Suspect shot by police with anti-riot weapon in Morrisburg, SIU investigating

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Arlyn McAdorey The province's police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot by Ontario Provincial Police officers with an anti-riot weapon in Morrisburg, Ont. early Sunday morning. In a news release, OPP say they were called to a report of an armed individual near Lakeshore Drive and Augusta Street near the Morrisburg boat launch at 4:30 a.m. Police say they located a man with firearms in the area when they arrived. OPP say officers discharged a 'less-lethal device' during the interaction. In an email, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) described the weapon as an Anti-Riot Weapon EnField (ARWEN), which fires non-lethal projectiles. Residents were asked to shelter-in-place and for boaters to steer clear of the boat launch for about two hours as officers responded to the incident. The advisory has since been lifted. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to hospital. OPP did not provide the extent of his injuries or the charges he is facing. The SIU, which investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury, discharge of a firearm at a person or allegations of sexual assault, has invoked its mandate, according to the OPP. An investigation continues. CTV News Ottawa has reached out to the SIU for additional details. Morrisburg is located about 80 kilometres south of downtown Ottawa.
