Mount Gilead holds candlelight vigil for fallen deputy Daniel Sherrer
MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio (WCMH) — The community gathered for a candlelight vigil Thursday to honor 31-year-old Morrow County Deputy Daniel Sherrer, who was shot and killed on Memorial Day. He died after responding to a domestic disturbance call where he found himself alone confronting an armed man. 'This has really hit the community really hard,' attendee Cathy Brake said. There were lots of tears, hugs, silence and prayers Thursday as people remembered Sherrer. 'I've lived in Morrow County my whole life and just to hear about this incident that's happened, it's breathtaking and it's really heartbreaking to the community,' resident Jennifer Fisher said. Outside of the growing memorial for Sherrer at the Morrow County Sheriff's Office, hundreds gathered for the candlelight vigil. 'Just a really deep, deep emotion of just thinking about his family and all of the officers that work here in Morrow County,' Brake said. The tight-knit community has been shaken to its core by Sherrer's death. 'Very, very sad thing especially for a small community like this and it almost made me tear up to see the community come together and support in a time like this,' said resident Hayden Styer. What we know about the conditions of the Mifflin Township officers who were shot Sherrer was a 2012 graduate of St. Charles Preparatory Academy in Bexley and studied at Bowling Green State University and Columbus State University. He spent his law enforcement career at the Morrow County Sheriff's Office since he was hired in May of 2021. 'Especially with how young he was in the department, only four years on, he had so much more to give,' attendee Abby Pence said. 'And from what I've read and heard it sounded like he was one of those good cops.' 31-year-old Sherrer was engaged to be married and is survived by his parents and other relatives. 'Just knowing that he's never going to have children, grandchildren, it's just sickening,' Brake said. Those at the vigil said in times like this there are often more questions than answers. Many are still struggling to make sense of Sherrer's death. Now, they're trying to find hope. 'Just seeing the community come together for this blue line family, it's definitely really meaningful to see how much support they actually have,' said Abby Pence. 'It's very heartwarming and it just shows the tightness of the community and the caring people that we have here,' Brake said. According to Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton and loved ones, Sherrer always had a smile on his face and loved the community he served. According to his obituary, Sherrer was an organ donor, choosing to help others after his death. Funeral arrangements have been finalized for Sherrer. According to Snyder Funeral Homes, visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. on June 3 at Northmor High School in Galion. The school is located at 7819 State Route 19. Services to honor and celebrate Sherrer's life will take place at the school on June 4 at 11 a.m. Private graveside services will be held at Marion Cemetery. Procession across central Ohio honors Morrow County deputy killed with responding to call
Hundreds took part in a procession Wednesday to honor fallen Morrow County Sheriff's Office deputy Daniel Sherrer, who was killed Memorial Day while responding to a domestic violence call in Marengo. The May 28 procession will bring Sherrer's body from Montgomery County to Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Gilead. It traveled east through Columbus on Interstate 270 and is moving north on Interstate 71. The Morrow County Sheriff's Office will hold a public candlelight vigil for Sherrer at 8:30 p.m. May 28 at its office at 101 Home Rd. in Mount Gilead. At a press conference May 27, Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton remembered Sherrer as a cheerful, friendly man who "always had a smile on his face." Sherrer was 31. Sherrer responded Memorial Day evening to a report of gunshots from a home in the 100 block of County Road 26 (Olive Green Marengo Fulton Road) at the intersection with County Road 15 (West Liberty-Mount Vernon Road), south of Marengo, according to the sheriff's office. There he encountered Brian Michael Wilson, 53, who has been charged with aggravated murder in his death, according to court records. Wilson threatened Sherrer several times before the two exchanged gunfire, killing Sherrer and injuring Wilson, according to an arrest affidavit. Wilson was transported to a local hospital after the shooting, and an initial court date in his case hasn't been set. Wilson had a history of domestic violence and firearm convictions from 1994 to 2009 when he lived in Marion and had been barred from owning firearms. He used two handguns to shoot Sherrer, according to an account of the shooting contained in a police affidavit. Why Ohio flags will fly at half-staff beginning May 27, 2025
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has ordered all American and Ohio flags be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, May 27. The governor's order said flags at all public buildings and grounds will be lowered beginning today for Morrow County sheriff deputy Daniel Sherrer, 31, who was shot and killed while on duty on Memorial Day. DeWine ordered the flags to be flown at half staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Morrow County, the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower today, and will remain in effect until sunset on the day of his funeral. Passenger left for dead in east Columbus crash identified In addition, all other public buildings and grounds throughout the state may fly the flags of the U.S. and the state of Ohio at half-staff at their discretion for the same time period. Sherrer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic incident on the evening of Memorial Day at a home just north of Marengo, Ohio. On Tuesday, May 27, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine ordered flags be flown at half-staff to honor slain Morrow County Sheriff's Office deputy Daniel Sherrer. Morrow County Sheriff remembers slain deputy Daniel Sherrer: 'He will be missed'
Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton identified Daniel Weston Sherrer, 31, as the deputy killed in a Memorial Day weekend shooting. During a press conference May 27, the day after the shooting, Hinton said Sherrer was a "godsend" for the office, the community and the county. "The guy was never in a bad mood, (he) always had a smile on his face. He would go out his way to see how your day was and crack a joke and (he) was just a great guy. He will be missed," Hinton said. Sherrer joined the sheriff's office in May 2021. Sherrer is survived by his parents and "numerous loved ones", according to Hinton. Funeral arrangements for Sherrer will be announced when they are finalized. Sherrer was responding to a domestic violence situation at a home on the 100 block of County Road 26 in Marengo on the evening of May 26 when an "officer involved shooting" occurred and a suspect fired at Sherrer, according to the Morrow County Sheriff's Office. Sherrer was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital, where he died. The suspect was also shot and transported to a local hospital in serious condition, according to the Morrow County Sheriff's Office. Hinton refused to identify the suspect at Tuesday's press conference, saying the suspect did not deserve to have their name spoken by him. "You will never hear his name come from my lips," Hinton said. The Delaware County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating the shooting. Sherrer's death is the second time an Ohio law enforcement officer has been killed in the line of duty in 2025. Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, is accused of intentionally ramming his car into Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy Larry Henderson, killing him while he worked traffic duty at a University of Cincinnati graduation on May 2, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported. The ramming occurred the same day that Hinton and other family members met with Cincinnati police and watched bodycam footage of Hinton's 18-year-old son, Ryan, being fatally shot by an officer on May 1. Hinton's lawyer, Clyde Bennett II, said his client was not in his right mind after watching the video and his actions were ""classic, mental illness, criminal conduct." A death penalty trial for Hinton is set to begin on Jan. 12, 2026. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued a statement on Sherrer's death Tuesday morning, saying his heart "was torn by the loss of yet another Ohio law enforcement officer, who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his community." "We are forever indebted to those who lay down their lives for others. I share in the anguish experienced by so many in this tight-knit community – my prayers are with Deputy Sherrer's family, the Morrow County Sheriff's Office and all who wear the badge," Yost said in the statement. "My thanks to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office for stepping up to lead the investigation at a time of crushing grief.' This story is ongoing and will be updated.
