Third suspect in connection with fatal Moses Lake shooting arrested in California

Mar. 30—Law enforcement arrested a 20-year-old man Sunday, the last named suspect allegedly connected with a drive-by shooting in Moses Lake that killed a 14-year-old and injured four others. Jose Beltran-Rodriguez, of Moses Lake, was arrested in Redding, California, following a weeklong, multistate manhunt launched by the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force, according to a news release from the law enforcement collaboration. Beltran-Rodriguez turned himself over to authorities, according to a social media post by the Moses Lake Police Department. The apprehension of Beltran-Rodriguez follows two prior arrests in connection with the shooting. Matthew Valdez, 18, of Moses Lake, was arrested Friday in Beaverton, Oregon, and Cesar A. Cabrera, 14, of Mattawa, Washington, was arrested March 24 in Richland. Cabrera was booked into the Chelan County Juvenile Center in Wenatchee. The three suspects, who, according to the news release, are suspected of being members of the Norteños gang, face murder, assault, drive-by shooting and firearm charges in the March 21 drive-by shooting, which took place in a residential neighborhood. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Moses Lake Police Department are pursuing federal charges, according to the release. Moses lake resident Crystal Santoyo, 26, two 17-year-olds and a 12-year-old were injured in the shooting. They were treated and released from the hospital, according to the Moses Lake Police Department. "The swift identification and arrest of multiple fugitives in this case demonstrates the strength of the U.S. Marshals Service's proactive manhunt strategy," said Craig Thayer, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Washington. "By leveraging cutting-edge investigative tools, intelligence analysis, and close partnerships with our law enforcement partners, we ensure that violent criminals are swiftly brought to justice."

14-year-old boy dead, four injured in Moses Lake shooting

Mar. 24—A 14-year-old boy is dead and four others injured in a shooting Friday in Moses Lake . No arrests have been made. The Moses Lake Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 500 block of Loop Drive after 9 p.m., the department said in a Facebook post. Police found five gunshot victims inside a car; the 14-year-old boy was found dead, and a 26-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl, a 17-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy were all transported to a local hospital. They are in stable condition as of Monday, according to Moses Lake police Capt. Mike Williams. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening. A car believed to be connected to the shooting was found two hours later abandoned on Buell Street in Moses Lake, the Facebook post said. Based on evidence found in the car, police executed a search warrant for a home on the same street. The people who live there are not suspects, the post said. Williams said he cannot say what was recovered during the search because of the ongoing investigation. No one has been arrested as of Monday, although Williams said nothing in the investigation leads police to believe the public is in any danger. The shooting was not gang-related, police believe, but have not disclosed a motive. No gathering had taken place before the shooting. The people in the car were on their way to pick someone up from a house, Williams said.

Moses Lake man arrested in connection with March 8 shooting

Mar. 17—MOSES LAKE — A Moses Lake man was arrested Friday in connection with a March 8 shooting on Stratford Road in Moses Lake. Luis Medina, 27, was arrested in Moses Lake and booked into the Grant County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault and drive-by shooting, said Moses Lake Police Department Captain Jeff Sursely in a press release. The shooting injured Monty Dent, 32, Moses Lake. Dent was hit in the arm and back; his father, Tom Dent, a Republican who serves in the Washington House of Representatives, said the nature of the back injury caused him to be airlifted to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. His son has since been released from the hospital and is recuperating. "During the arrest, a gun was recovered from the suspect's vehicle and will be tested to see if it was the gun used in the assault," Sursely said. Moses Lake Police Department officers were summoned to a report of an argument in the 1100 block of Stratford Road on the evening of March 8. When they arrived at the fight scene, they received notification of a shooting at Stratford Road and Maple Drive Northeast. "A witness described a white sedan pulling up next to the victim and firing several shots into the vehicle as they traveled northbound on Stratford Road," Sursely said. Rep. Dent was participating in the 2025 Washington Legislative Session, but emergencies don't respect time nor place, he said. His wife was also away from home. "I'm really concerned with the anger that's in the community," Dent said. "What are we doing that's creating this?" Dent said it's more common now for people to respond to aggravation with violence, which isn't a good trend. "We need to address this in a different way. We need to look for the cause," he said. "The COVID thing really changed things a lot — people were isolated and unable to have the normal social interactions. They were just shut down and left alone." That made the trend worse but didn't cause it, he said. "How are we going to reverse this trend that we're faced with right now?" he said. "That's my big concern." His legislative colleagues rallied around, he said. "I'm really grateful for that, for the support of the Legislature," he said. "All the members on both sides (of the aisle) reached out — unbelievably so. They check in with me every day." Governor Bob Ferguson, a Democrat, offered the use of the governor's plane to ensure Dent got to Spokane as quickly as possible, he said. He also got a ride from the airport to the hospital. Dent said he's a longtime supporter of more severe penalties for crimes that involve guns and will advocate for that. "No matter what, this is not what a polite society does," he said.
