Eco-friendly design - made with sustainable materials, including recycled fabric options. Comfort meets support - soft cushions that don't compromise on sturdiness. Need-to-knows: Warranty: five years. Seats: Up to three people comfortably. Colours: Terracotta, Marble White, Oatmeal, Olive, Moss Green, Rose, Slate, Sand, Midnight Navy. Fabric options: Classic Weave, Chenille, Chunky Weave, Recycled Weave (not all colours are available in every fabric - you can check that out in more detail on their site). Sofa dimensions: 188cm (L) x 111cm (W) x 88cm (H). Bed dimensions (when open): 188cm (L) x 153cm (W) x 88cm (H). Frame materials: Solid American Ash timber and plywood with an American Ash veneer finish. Eva Slideway Sofa Bed: The full review First impressions Unboxing the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed, my first thought was, 'Okay, this actually looks really nice.' The fabric felt sturdy, the colour was spot on, and it slotted into my space better than I expected. I did have a couple of little doubts though, mainly around how solid it would feel once set up, since it's pretty lightweight. But putting it together was super straightforward, and once it was in place, it actually felt more stable than I thought. So while I wasn't 100% sold right out of the box, I was about 99% there, and it definitely made a strong first impression. How comfortable is the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed? The mattress on the Eva sofa bed was really comfortable, a medium firm plushy mattress that I personally found easy to rest on and took a few afternoon naps on it (managed to get in a solid couple of hours) and didn't find it uncomfortable on my back on any of the occasions, unlike some of the sofa beds I have used in the past. Setup Having to put together furniture yourself is no fun (there I said it!), and no one wants to spend hours (or days, like I have in some cases) putting together furniture with so many steps and the need for various tools involved. So when I started assembling the sofa bed, I was so happy with how simplistic it was to put this all together, and with no tools needed! Everything came in four boxes, the biggest being for the back frame and the base. The frame and the arm rests are already joined (super handy) and only needed to be folded out. The base needed the legs screwed in (twist screws, like I said, no tools needed) and with L marking so you know exactly where to put them in (but it's not hard to figure out) and then hand screws to attach the base to the back frame and arm rests. This took not even five minutes (thanks Dad for the help!) and again can't stress how easy it was. Once we were confident with it being sturdy, we started unpacking the mattresses and cushions and added the covers to them - they are both separate covers for the base and backing, but you can zip them together to keep them joined. Design and support The Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed comes in a great range of colours and fabrics, which makes it pretty easy to find something that would suit our space. We went with the Moss Green in the Classic Weave, and honestly, I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. I've definitely been caught out before by colours looking completely different in real life compared to online, but this time it was spot on - what I saw on the screen is exactly what we got. If you're a bit unsure or want to be extra sure before choosing, you can order free fabric swatches from the Eva site. It's such a handy option, especially when you're buying something like furniture online. I highly recommend doing that if you want to see how it'll look in your space first. Materials used The Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed strikes a great balance between quality and sustainability. It comes in four fabric options: Classic and Chunky Weave, which are both 100% polyester; a soft chenille blend; and Recycled Weave, made entirely from recycled polyester. The frame combines solid American Ash with plywood and is finished in a natural, low-VOC oil, which is not only durable but also better for the environment. The seat and back cushions are made with layers of supportive foam, wrapped in upcycled foam and polyester fibre, making it both comfortable and eco-conscious. Personally, I really appreciate the thoughtful mix of materials. It feels like care went into creating something that's stylish, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly. If you're looking for a more sustainable option without compromising on quality, this sofa bed is a great choice - it feels solid and well-made. One feature that stood out to me is the use of low-VOC materials. If you have little ones at home or just want to keep your indoor air as clean as possible, that's a big plus. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) can contribute to indoor air pollution, so knowing this sofa helps reduce that is definitely reassuring, especially for family households. Final verdict: Should you buy the Eva Sofa Bed? If you're after a stylish, compact, and genuinely comfortable sofa bed in NZ, the Eva Slideaway is a solid pick. It has that great balance between practical and aesthetic, as well as being really easy to set up (seriously, it took under ten minutes with zero tools). The mattress is supportive without being stiff, and it works just as well for a full night's sleep as it does for a quick arvo nap. As far as sofa beds go, this one blends in beautifully with most spaces, and the colour options give it that extra bit of flexibility. Is it the best sofa bed in New Zealand? That depends on what you're after. The low-to-ground pull-out might not suit everyone, but for me, it wasn't a dealbreaker. Overall, if you're short on space and want something that's comfy, low-maintenance, and actually looks good, the Eva Slideaway is one of the best sofa beds New Zealand has on offer. *This story contains carefully curated selections from The Selection team and affiliate links which may earn NZ Herald a commission.

2019 Volkswagen Golf R on Bring a Trailer Stands Out with a Six-Speed Stick and a Spektrum Hue
The seventh-generation VW Golf R is prized among Volkswagen enthusiasts. 2019 is the final year for the gen-seven Golf R. This example also sports a custom paint color from VW's short-lived Spektrum program. The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf was something of a high-water mark for the breed, in the same way that the 997-chassis Porsche 911 is still sought after by enthusiasts. Sure, the cars got faster, but they also got less involving to drive and certainly less discreet. The all-wheel-drive Golf R variant was at the top of the lineup in both performance and price. It was a pretty special car, and for a while VW offered a way to make it even more special. Bring a Trailer This 2019 Golf R up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos) not only has the six-speed manual you want, it's one of the few cars ordered though Volkswagen's Spektrum program. That special order catalog let buyers choose from a staggering 40 different paint options, at a cost of $2500. This one is Moss Green, and it's one of only five ordered into the U.S. Bring a Trailer In a comparison test between a 2019 Golf R and a 2019 Honda Civic Type R, we opined that you'd be better off keeping that $2500 in your pocket and going for one of the five standard colors. In retrospect, that was wrong. The chance to personalize your performance hatch was a bargain at the time. Porsche's paint-to-sample program, for example, will set you back $13,140 for anything more exciting than metallic red or blue on a Macan. VW's Spektrum paint options ranged from teal to deep purple, and now that the current R is only available in blue or black, it's worth trying to track down an older one. Bring a Trailer This car is unmodified except for the aftermarket OZ 18-inch wheels, and it comes with the stock 19s included. Green over black is just aces on a Golf of this era, muted but unusual enough that VW enthusiasts will clock the secret handshake. Remember when Germany knew how to do subtle performance better than anyone? That's this generation of Golf R. The mileage is decent at 45,000, and the R came with lots of features as the top of the Golf range. Mechanically you've got that six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive to put the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine's 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque to the ground. For laid-back cruising, there's a Fender stereo, adaptive cruise control, and heated bucket seats. Bring a Trailer As a fly-under-the-radar practical hatchback that's very fleet of foot, the Golf R is easy to like. Throw in the manual transmission for a bit more driver engagement and a special color that'll have you looking back over your shoulder every time you park it, and it's peak hot VW. The auction ends on May 28.

Sony Xperia 1 VII launched with Snapdragon 8 Elite: Pre-orders, price, features and more
Sony has introduced its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VII, in European. The Xperia 1 VII is now available for pre-order across Europe and comes in three colour options: Moss Green, Orchid Purple, and Slate Black. Sony has priced the Xperia 1 VII at GBP 1,399, which roughly converts to ₹ 1,56,700. The Xperia 1 VII is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform, paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Users looking for more space can expand the storage up to 2TB via a microSD card. The handset runs on Android 15 out of the box, and Sony has promised four major Android updates along with six years of security updates. At the front, the phone features a 6.5-inch full-HD+ OLED display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels. The screen supports a 120Hz refresh rate, 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, and Sony's Bravia technology for enhanced picture clarity. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 offers protection for the front display, while the rear panel also features Gorilla Glass, adding to the device's durability. The phone has an IPX5 and IPX8 rating for water resistance, along with IP6X certification for dust protection. One of the key highlights of the Xperia 1 VII is its triple rear camera setup. The system includes a 48MP primary Sony Exmor T sensor (1/1.3-inch) with a 24mm focal length, a 12MP Exmor RS sensor featuring an optical zoom range of 85mm to 170mm, and a 48MP Exmor RS ultrawide sensor (1/1.56-inch) with a 16mm focal length. The camera unit, backed by Sony's Alpha camera technology, offers features such as 30fps burst shooting with autofocus and auto exposure, as well as 4K HDR video recording at 120fps. On the front, the phone is equipped with a 12MP selfie camera. In addition to its imaging capabilities, the Xperia 1 VII is designed to appeal to audio enthusiasts. Meet the Sony Xperia 1 VII: State-of-the-art chip, bigger cameras, signature design, limited release
As if Sony didn't have enough trouble attracting attention to its high-end Android handsets nowadays, the latest addition to the Xperia 1 roster had its official announcement scheduled for just a few hours after Samsung's hugely anticipated Galaxy S25 Edge. 6.5-inch OLED screen with 2340 x 1080 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate technology; Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor; Android 15 ; ; Four OS upgrades and six years of security patches guaranteed; 12GB RAM; 256GB internal storage space; microSD support for up to 2TB expansion; 48MP primary rear-facing camera with f/1.9 aperture; 12MP secondary telephoto sensor; 48MP ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.0 aperture; 12MP single front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture; 5,000mAh battery; IP68 water and dust resistance; Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 screen protection; Corning Gorilla Glass Victus back; Side-mounted fingerprint sensor; 3.5mm headphone jack; Full-stage stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos technology; USB Type-C 3.2 port; Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC; 162 x 74 x 8.2mm dimensions; 197 grams weight; Moss Green, Orchid Purple, and Slate Black color options. Yes, ladies and gents, Sony Mobile's newest crown jewel looks an awful lot like last year's Xperia 1 VI, both from a strictly cosmetic standpoint and as far as specifications and features are concerned. But there are also a few notable distinctions, and while some have been very easy to predict for a very long time, a couple of others are truly special, setting the Xperia 1 VII apart from its predecessor in a big way. I'm talking first and foremost about the ultra-wide-angle lens, which is equipped with a 48MP sensor that's not only superior in its megapixel count, but also physically larger than its Xperia 1 VI counterpart, thus promising clear night shots "equivalent to full-frame cameras." Sony, of course, leveraged some of that Alpha expertise to improve the photography experience as a whole while working both on the hardware and software fronts to please mobile shutterbugs and catch up to the best camera phones out there. AI Camerawork and Auto Framing are two exciting new features aimed at making it easier to produce "pro level" videos with expertly framed subjects, although we'll obviously have to wait and thoroughly review the Sony Xperia 1 VII for ourselves before actually declaring those tools handy, let alone game-changing. Unsurprisingly, Sony's 2025 contender for the best Android phone title packs a cutting-edge Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, as well as the same 5,000mAh battery as the Xperia 1 VI. For some reason, the Xperia 1 VII is a few grams heavier than its forerunner, and contrary to a couple of recent rumors, the 4K screen resolution of the Xperia 1 V is not coming back this year either. Water is wet, grass is green, and ultra-high-end Sony smartphones are overpriced. Unfortunately, that entire axiom is as true today as always, with the Xperia 1 VII fetching €1,499 and £1,399 on pre-order in select European markets in its lone 256GB storage variant. That equates to around $1,670 and $1,850 respectively, but more importantly, it makes Sony's latest Android powerhouse cost more than some of its biggest rivals. The hugely popular Galaxy S25 Ultra, for instance, is normally priced at £1,249 ($1,650) and up in the UK, while something like the OnePlus 13 will only set you back £899 ($1,186) in its most affordable configuration. Even Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max is cheaper than the Sony Xperia 1 VII , starting at £1,199 ($1,580) and fetching £1,399 with 512GB storage. Why am I focusing so much on British prices? Well, because I don't have any official US numbers just yet, and while those could still come a little later, last year's Xperia 1 VI makes me fear this year's top-of-the-line Xperia handset will not be released stateside either. Despite some of its obvious imperfections, the Xperia 1 VII remains a breath of fresh air in today's mobile industry thanks to its integration of Alpha, Bravia, and Walkman technologies, as well as its surviving headphone jack and microSD card slot, so it's definitely sad to see Sony repeat the same big pricing and availability mistakes as last year.
