Mosul International Airport about to be inaugurated

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Transport revealed on Thursday that Mosul International Airport is now fully operational and open to any airlines with the appropriate licenses, following a successful trial run earlier in the day. The test flight involved the landing of an Iraqi Airways Boeing 737 on the freshly rebuilt runway, a significant achievement ahead of the airport's formal opening on June 10. The spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Transport, Maitham Al-Safi, told the state-run news agency (INA) that the reopening of the airport represents a purely Iraqi accomplishment carried out under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Transport. Al-Safi stated that Iraqi Airways would be the first airline to operate flights to and from Mosul and that the ministry is willing to collaborate with other international airlines in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Iraqi government laws. The Iraqi official stressed the strategic importance of Mosul International Airport to Nineveh province, Iraq's second most populated province. He characterized the initiative as a major improvement in linking Mosul with the rest of Iraq and the world. During his last visit to Mosul last December to check the progress made in the airport's construction, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani ordered local authorities to open the airport on June 10 to convey a statement of resistance against terrorism. Al-Sudani is expected to fly from Baghdad to Mosul International Airport to commemorate the airport's inauguration. Mosul International Airport, which was previously destroyed by ISIS terrorists, is the third most important airport in Iraq, following Baghdad International Airport and Basra International Airport. The date set by the Iraqi Prime Minister to open Mosul International Airport coincides with the date Mosul was occupied by ISIS groups.

Test flight lands at Mosul Airport ahead of June 10 reopening

Shafaq News/ A test flight by Iraqi Airways successfully landed at Mosul International Airport on Thursday, ahead of the airport's official reopening scheduled for June 10. Nineveh Governor Abdulqadir al-Dakhil told Shafaq News, after arriving aboard the aircraft, that the test flight, which departed from Baghdad and landed in under 30 minutes, is part of broader efforts to restore the city's connectivity with the rest of Iraq and international destinations following years of disruption. 'The airport has been prepared in line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and is now equipped with a modern runway, a fully developed passenger terminal, and an advanced control tower.' The airport's reopening is expected to take place in the presence of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who is slated to arrive on one of the first official flights to Mosul as part of the inauguration ceremony. Governor al-Dakhil emphasized that the test landing signals the completion of key reconstruction works and transitions the project into a new phase: the operational management of the airport, noting that negotiations with several international airport management firms will begin after the Eid al-Adha holiday (June 6-9) to identify a qualified operator in line with global aviation practices. 'We will evaluate offers from international firms and hold technical negotiations to ensure that the selected operator meets efficiency standards and enhances Mosul's strategic and economic role,' al-Dakhil added. The airport project, initially launched in 2023, comes after extensive damage inflicted during ISIS's control of the city between 2014 and 2017. Reconstruction has been financed through the Nineveh provincial budget, in coordination with the Iraqi Ministries of Transport and Interior, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Border Crossings Authority.

Nineveh's al-Dakhil with Turkish Consul: Mosul Airport operations top agenda

Shafaq News/ Negotiations are underway with Turkiye and Istanbul Airport operator IGA to finalize a management deal for Mosul International Airport ahead of its June 10 launch, Nineveh Governor Abdul Qader al-Dakhil confirmed on Sunday. The discussions, held in Mosul, included Turkish Consul General Serhad Varli, IGA officials, Iraq's Civil Aviation Authority, and Nineveh's advisory team, according to al-Dakhil's statement. He said IGA's offer is under review, citing its global reputation and potential to raise the airport's standards. In turn, Varli reiterated Turkiye's support, framing IGA's involvement as a 'strategic boost' to regional infrastructure and bilateral ties. Notably, the airport, central to Mosul's post-conflict recovery, has faced multiple delays. Its launch, scheduled to align with the anniversary of Mosul's fall to ISIS, is reportedly expected to restore international links and spur economic growth.

Iraq welcomes Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Syria

In a statement released late Tuesday, Iraq's foreign ministry said it 'welcomes the announcement by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, of his intention to lift the sanctions imposed on the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic.' The ministry voiced optimism that the decision 'will contribute to supporting the path of stability sought by the Syrian people and ending their prolonged suffering caused by the humanitarian and economic crisis.' Trump made the announcement earlier on Tuesday during a speech in Saudi Arabia, the first stop on a regional tour that also includes the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. "I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness," Trump declared, signaling a shift in US policy toward Damascus. Earlier that day, a White House official confirmed that Trump is expected to 'say hello' to Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday, during his visit to Saudi Arabia. Speaking on background to reporters, including Rudaw's correspondent, the official stated that 'President [Trump] has agreed to say hello to the Syrian President while in Saudi Arabia tomorrow [Wednesday].' No further details were provided. Iraq also praised Saudi Arabia's diplomatic efforts on Tuesday, stating, 'The intensive diplomatic efforts exerted by the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have played a key role in supporting the Syrian people and reaching this initiative.' Baghdad expressed hope that the development would 'mark the beginning of a new phase of international cooperation to end the Syrian crisis, through supporting comprehensive peaceful solutions that preserve Syria's unity and sovereignty and ensure the rights of all components of the Syrian people.' The ministry underscored the importance of Arab solidarity at this 'critical stage,' reaffirming Iraq's commitment to strengthening cooperation among 'brotherly countries' and calling for a unified front to 'combat terrorism in all its forms and prevent its spread.' On December 8, a coalition of opposition groups led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), then commanded by Sharaa, ousted the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. Sharaa was appointed interim president in late January. Since taking power, the new leadership in Damascus has repeatedly called on the international community to lift Assad-era sanctions, arguing that they are hindering the country's economic recovery and post-war reconstruction. For its part, the US had issued a six-month sanctions exemption to facilitate humanitarian aid, though Syrian officials have said the move had limited effect. In March, Washington presented Damascus with a list of eight conditions for potential sanctions relief. These included the destruction of any remaining Assad-era chemical weapons and guarantees that no foreign nationals would hold senior positions in the new government. Speaking to Rudaw on Saturday, Syrian Economy Minister Mohammed Nidal al-Shaar notably anticipated stating that the international sanctions issue 'will be resolved in the near future.'
