Spotlight on Broome County Humane Society
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Tioga County Chamber of Commerce is shining its spotlight on the non-profit, the Broome County Humane Society. The Humane Society on Conklin Avenue in Binghamton, cares for over 150 animals at any given time, with the goal of someone adopting them into their forever home. The facility offers several services to the community, including a spay-neuter clinic every Thursday and two Mondays each month, grooming, vaccinations, boarding and more. The fundraising coordinator, Kim Broderick, says they could always use more volunteers, especially with kitten season right around the corner. 'Those types of needs are going to be great. Whether it's the kitten replacement milk, the kitten food, puppy food, there's always a need. Blankets, towels so, we're gearing up because we're really starting to get busy,' said Broderick. Broderick says last year, the Humane Society donated around 1,500 pounds of pet food to people in the community. The non-profit is running its Petals for Paws hanging basket fundraiser, where you can purchase flowers and plants to raise money through May 15. Local leaders prepare to hit the runway for Mothers and Babies Fashion Gala
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – One of the area's biggest fashion shows is in a few weeks, featuring local business owners and leaders as the runway models. Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network is hosting its 11th annual Fashion Gala at the Double Tree Hotel in Downtown Binghamton on May 1. The gala is the organization's biggest fundraiser every year. This year, with the goal of raising $50,000. Several local public figures will be the models, including the Broome County District Attorney, SUNY Broome's president, and even the Rumble Ponies. Executive Director of Mothers and Babies Alicia Beekman says if you've never been to a fashion show before, this is a great one to start with. 'So, the participants don't have to dress up very fancy, but our models do. And what makes this a great community event, it is really the buy in from the community stores, the community members who are the models, and then all of the community vendors that are here. So, it is really pulling everybody together and we really just have a great time,' said Beekman. The show will run from 5:30 to 8:30 on Thursday May 1. Tickets are $40. To purchase, click here. Aliza Spencer Friendship Day honors legacy of murdered Binghamton student
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Calvin Coolidge Elementary community honored the memory of Aliza Spencer today through multiple acts of kindness. The school that Aliza went to for kindergarten through 5th grade, commemorated her death with its Aliza Spencer Friendship Day. Spencer was 12 years old and a 6th grader at East Middle when she was shot and killed while walking near her home on April 21, 2022. Her killer has not been arrested. On Thursday, students from East Middle came to Coolidge, one per each classroom, and helped the younger students make friendship bracelets and play friendship bingo. 4th grade teacher Ann Marie Bogart's daughter was best friends with Aliza. She's determined to keep her memory alive. 'She was a model student and everyone loved Aliza. She loved everyone. And she deserves to be remembered for the beautiful person that she was,' said Bogart. Bogart showed her students a slide show about Aliza as well as a remembrance piece that News 34 aired shortly after her death. Bogart and a student from East also read the children's book 'Can Cat and Bird Be Friends?' East students Jahking Grandoit and Kashawn Hemingway say it feels good to spend time with younger kids. 'I feel like it's a good way to honor Aliza and how she was a good friend to everybody and liked to socialize and bring good vibes to everybody,' said Grandoit. 'Some kids knew Aliza and some kids didn't. It's good to do friendship stuff so that kids know how to be kind to each other and stuff,' said Hemingway. Other ways in which the school honored Aliza were through holding a food drive and book drive to restock the Little Free Library and Blessing Box that were created in her honor, as well as a photo area for kids. Binghamton's DPW painted a purple stripe down Robinson Street in front of the school in her honor. Broome County Sheriff, Undersheriff discuss leadership skills
TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar and his Undersheriff Sam Davis were presenters at a networking event on Thursday, not to discuss law enforcement, but leadership skills instead. Akshar and Davis were guests of the Upstate New York Business Meet-Up, which is co-organized by Davis's wife Amira. Aside from their law enforcement careers, both Akshar and the Davis's run consulting firms. Akshar Consulting focuses on security strategies for businesses and large events. The Davis's operate D5 Consulting Group which offers training in leadership and workplace violence prevention. They believe leadership training is ineffective or non-existent in many businesses and organizations. 'I worked at a company before where I did training and it was on a computer. What would I do on a computer? I would sit at the computer, and I would hit the fast forward button and I wouldn't pay any attention to anything that I was supposed to be learning or absorbing,' said Amira. 'There can only be one true leader. But as my role is, as a number two with him, I think it's a different perspective. Talking about your perspective of each person's role, knowing the role is very important,' said Sam. Amira says D5 runs trainings that are interactive and participatory. She says building relationships is key to good leadership. Akshar founded his small consulting business in 2019 when he was still a State Senator. Now, he oversees a Sheriff's Office with nearly 300 employees. 'It's really about empowerment and it's really about team for both Sam and I. We've come to find that as the leaders of the organization, you can set mission, you can set direction, but at the end of the day, it really requires you to bring the collective group of people together to execute that mission,' said Akshar. The Upstate New York Business Meet-Up is a free monthly event meant to encourage networking across the Southern Tier. It meets every third Thursday of the month from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in a different location between Binghamton, Elmira, Corning, Watkins Glen and Ithaca. For more information, click here.
