Rs 3,500 Per Month, Rs 12,000 For 'Valuable' Intel: What The CRPF 'Spy' Was Allegedly Promised
Last Updated: Moti Ram allegedly handed over internal deployment data, troop movement details, intelligence agency reports, and updates on counter-terror operations in Kashmir, to Pakistan He wore the uniform of a soldier, posted in Kashmir's Pahalgam region, tasked with safeguarding the nation. But, CRPF sub-inspector Moti Ram Jat seemed to be instead treading a far more dangerous path, that ended in his arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of espionage for Pakistan. The story of Moti Ram's alleged descent into espionage was reportedly orchestrated through a female agent who posed as a television journalist, revealed investigators. The woman reportedly introduced herself as a media professional from a prominent news network in Chandigarh. Initially requesting seemingly harmless information, she developed a relationship with Moti Ram over messages and video calls, eventually gaining his trust. The CRPF personnel, unaware of the ruse, began forwarding confidential documents. Later, a man, posing as a fellow journalist from the same channel, took over communication. He was later identified as a Pakistani intelligence officer. The NIA said that Moti Ram handed over internal deployment data, troop movement details, intelligence agency reports, and updates on counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir, to the handlers. The information was often sensitive enough to pose a direct threat to national security. He was allegedly paid Rs 3,500 each month for his services, and occasionally a bonus of Rs 12,000 for what his handlers termed 'valuable" intel. These amounts were credited to his wife's bank account, revealed NIA. Evidence recovered from Moti Ram's phone included screenshots of classified documents, internal reports of the Multi-Agency Centre (MAC), and communications indicating knowledge of the location of suspected terrorists. Shockingly, he continued to pass on these updates even after being transferred out of Pahalgam in mid-April, just five days before the terror attack on April 22. Despite his removal, he allegedly continued to relay updates, including details about Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to the region and security arrangements such as the closure of 50 tourist locations, some of which were already public, but were emphasised separately in his communication with handlers. What stood out to investigators was the naivety with which Moti Ram preserved his trail. None of the chats or exchanges had been deleted from his phone. Security officials placed Moti Ram under surveillance for weeks before swooping in. His arrest took place in Delhi, where he had been reassigned. Prior to the NIA formally taking him into custody, both the CRPF and intelligence agencies subjected him to multiple rounds of questioning. The case is now being heard at the Patiala House Court in Delhi. Moti Ram has been remanded to NIA custody until June 6. The agency has not ruled out the involvement of other personnel and is expanding its probe to trace any additional leaks or accomplices within the security apparatus. CRPF jawan arrested by NIA on espionage charges was posted in Pahalgam till 5 days before attack
The Haryana resident was handed over to the NIA on 21 May—the same day when he was dismissed from the CRPF for violation of service laws. Sources aware of the development said that Moti Ram Jat was posted with the 116th battalion of the paramilitary force deployed in Pahalgam. In fact, he was transferred 17 April just five days before terrorists struck at the tourist spot, they said. New Delhi: An assistant sub inspector (ASI) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charge of sharing confidential information with Pakistani intelligence operatives was posted in the Pahalgam sub division of Anantnag, ThePrint has learnt. Moti Ram is currently under 15-day custody of the NIA, which is also investigating the 22 April terror attack at the Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam. A group of foreign terrorists had killed 26 people, including one Nepali national, drawing widespread condemnation. Around a fortnight later, India launched Operation Sindoor in the wee hours of 7 May, targeting infrastructures and camps linked to terrorist outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen in Pakistan. Moti Ram, according to sources in the security establishment, was questioned by senior officers of the CRPF over his suspicious social media activities. 'After thorough questioning by CRPF officers and central agencies, he was handed over to the NIA for investigation under relevant laws,' one of the sources told ThePrint. 'He has been arrested for indulging in espionage activity in passing sensitive info about intelligence inputs regarding operations conducted by security forces, location of security installations to Pakistani intelligence operatives in exchange for money,' the source said. The arrest and dismissal of the CRPF ASI comes at a time when police across several states have intensified surveillance to nab suspects who shared confidential information with their Pakistan handlers in exchange of money and those who were working to spread Pakistan's propaganda around terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. A YouTuber, a security guard, a businessman, a student and an app developer are among those arrested in the past fortnight as police tighten the noose around such espionage cartels. Earlier in the day, ThePrint reported that Moti Ram was in contact with Pakistani intelligence operatives for a long time and was sharing confidential information in exchange of money since 2023. The accused was actively involved in espionage activity and had been sharing classified information related to national security with Pakistan intelligence operatives since 2023, according to an NIA spokesperson. The dismissed ASI was found to have been receiving funds from Pakistan intelligence operatives through various conduits, the spokesperson said, adding that Moti Ram remains in NIA custody till 6 June. NIA arrests CRPF member for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistan
The National Investigation Agency on Monday said that it has arrested a member of the Central Reserve Police Force for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistani intelligence officials, The Indian Express reported. Assistant Sub-Inspector Moti Ram Jat, was arrested from Delhi, the National Investigation Agency said. The agency accused him of passing on classified information to Pakistani intelligence officers, since 2023 in exchange for money. A special court in Delhi sent Moti Ram to the investigative agency's custody till June 6, The Hindu reported. The Central Reserve Police Force dismissed the assistant sub-inspector from service following the allegations. 'In the course of close monitoring of social media activity by CRPF personnel, in coordination with central agencies, one individual was found to have acted in violation of established norms and protocols,' the police force was quoted as saying by The Hindu. Moti Ram's arrest came two days after a contractual health worker from Gujarat's Kutch district was held for allegedly sharing sensitive information about military establishments with a Pakistani intelligence operative. The arrest also came in the backdrop of heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which left 26 persons dead. In the past two weeks, at least 14 persons have been arrested across the country on allegations of spying for Pakistan and leaking sensitive information about Operation Sindoor, the Indian military operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
